Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, should fast, i.e., eat only one full meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Phillip & James SSPJ School News First Graders Learn About Stations of the Cross Kindergarten Classifies Blocks Our first graders have been learning about the Stations of the Cross. They know them so well that as a class they can identify all of them. In addition to reading a story, they have been making their own special book about the Stations of the Cross. They have one page for each station, write about it, and color a picture. The students love Jesus very much and know that he suffered and died for all of us so that we can get into Heaven. They can even relate to his suffering. For example, after Jesus falls in the 3rd station, he sees his mother in the 4th station because everyone wants to see their mom right after they fall. Below are Caroline and Zach with their books. Kindergarten students love to play with blocks, so it was fun to use them in a recent science lesson. At this age, students learn how to identify the characteristics of different items. Last week, they identified the characteristics of animals; this week, they characterized blocks. They learned that there are three different characteristics of blocks: size, shape, and color. The students paired up to compare blocks and determine what made them similar and what made them different. Below, Juliana and Nick discover that although the blocks they are holding are the same size, they are different in shape and color. Students Represent SSPJ at Archdiocesan Choral Festival Jessica, Madeline, and Lizzie (pictured left) recently performed at the Archdiocesan Choral Festival. This was a great experience for the three students who prepared with the help of Mrs. Guy, SSPJ’s choir director. They performed with over 110 other students representing over 35 other schools in the Archdiocese. This is quite a challenging task because although our students practice with each other, they only have one day to practice with the other students. Jessica also recently showcased another talent: art! She was the winner for the individual category of the Work of Mercy Art Contest at the Poor Man’s Supper. See her award winning picture to the right. See next week’s bulletin for the winning class picture. Page 8 144 Ss. Phillip & James SEPTEMBER REGISTRATION INFORMATION Registration for SS.
