We are not made to be alone. Human beings need and
complete each other. Friendship and community satisfy that
longing with bonds of common interest and love. Marriage is a
uniquely intimate form of friendship that calls a man and a
woman to love each other in the manner of God’s covenant.
Marriage is a Sacrament. Married love is fruitful and offered
without reservation. This love is in the image of Jesus’s
faithfulness to the Church.

Dear Sisters and Brother in the Lord,
On behalf of Archbishop Chaput, I am sharing with you a request from Bishop Francis Kalabat of the Chaldean Diocese of
Saint Thomas the Apostle to broadly encourage prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary for her intercession on behalf of
persecuted Christians in the Middle East. Individuals are asked to say this prayer in conjunction with the recitation of the
Holy Rosary for the intention of the persecuted.
“Mother of God, Virgin Mary, be for us a safeguard from all illnesses and hardships. Through the great love you have for
Christ, ask and beseech Him to be merciful to us, to give healing to our ailments, to console the downtrodden, to reunite those

To prepare for the World Meeting of Families and Pope Francis’s visit, we are studying a catechesis on family life called
Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive. Each month, our parish is reflecting on one chapter. Previous monthly
reflections are online at PhillyEvang.org/wmof. You can order the catechesis and learn more about next year’s big event, at
WorldMeeting2015.org. Chapter 4: Two Become One Our first three chapters reviewed basic Christian faith. We saw how
confidence in Jesus opens the door to faith, enabling us to know God and what God has done in history. God creates male and
female in his image, and makes a covenant with Israel and the Church. God is faithful to his promises, even when we sin.
Because God loved us in this way, we spend our lives trying to return our love to God and share it with our neighbor. In this
month’s chapter and in the chapters to come, we will study the implications of these doctrines for marriage and the family.
When husband and wife promise to love each other as God loves us all, they make a commitment to love not only romantically,
but also with mercy and forgiveness. Our culture sometimes teaches us to think of marriage as a negotiable contract between
two individuals who happen to feel sexual chemistry. This view of love is a recipe for instability, since it is still premised on
individualism and the waxing and waning of romantic feelings. The Church’s alternative account of love enables us to
transcend the culture of individualism and become who we were created to be. Founded on Christ, sustained in the sacraments,
Catholic marriage builds humility and self-sacrifice into the dynamic between male and female. As this month’s chapter
explains in more detail, sacramental marriage creates intimate communion even in times of suffering and hardship. “Love is our
mission,” as our catechism’s title declares, because Christ’s love frees us from false, shrunken accounts of love and makes us

Consultation of the Clergy and Faithful/2015 Synod of Bishops
Once again, as with the most recent Synod of Bishop, the Office of the Synod of Bishops invites a process of broad
consultation among every component of the local Church, including academic institutions, organizations, lay movements and
other ecclesial associations.
A summary of the Lineamenta and accompanying questions for consultation can be found on the Archdiocesan website at
www.archphila.org. Responses to those questions are to be submitted by Monday, March 9, 2015. The online instrument will
automatically submit responses to the Archdiocese for participants. All responses will be collated and form a general response
of the clergy and faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to assist with the preparation for the 2015 Synod of Bishops.

Sacrament of Confirmation
The Sacrament of Confirmation will be
administered at SS. Philip and James Parish on
May 5 & 6. Any adult Catholic who has not had the
opportunity to receive this sacrament should contact the

included as a candidate for this sacrament.
Adult Club—meets at 12:30 pm on the first and third
Thursday of each month. Refreshments, a short meeting,
bingo or bridge. We also arrange day trips during the

Sacrament of Matrimony
Couples must make arrangements to meet with a

" Does anybody hear? Does anybody care?"
The MARCH FOR LIFE marked the 42nd anniversary of the
legalization of abortion in the U.S. at every stage of fetal
development. As a consequence, statistics show in the greater
Philadelphia area more than 10,000 abortions in the first three quarters
of 2014, almost 50% of them in the black community. " Does anybody
hear? Does anybody care?" St. John Paul II on a papal trip to the U.S
warned that if we want peace we must end abortion. If you are not
aware about this evil taking place and would like to be informed as
practicing Catholics and people of God, come and view the
compelling documentary film "40" that examines the effects of
abortion on our nation. Can you spare one hour to become informed
about an issue vital for the future of our nation? We are all called to

The "40 Film" is here. Don't miss it! This is a
thoughtful and compelling one hour film that
examines the effects of abortion on our nation over
t h e 40+ years since Roe v. Wade. It presents abortion as
the most important human rights issue of our time for people
of all persuasions. It addresses the issue from both sides and
provides heartfelt testimonies from post abortive women and
reports on youth as the generation that will end the abortion
holocaust. Take time to view the film, even if only partially,
to become inspired to pray for an end to abortion during the
40 Days For Life campaign this Lent. The film will be
screened in the church after the 8:30 AM and 7:30 PM
Masses on Ash Wednesday. Please plan to attend.

SSPJ School Celebrates Catholic Schools Week!
Religion Bowl Adds Grade Winner
Every Quarter Counts!
Every Catholic Schools Week, the students anticipate
the annual religion bowl. Students are chosen to
represent their homeroom based on religion contests
within their own classrooms. Questions are asked in
increased difficulty based on the grade level. As in
previous years, there were three rounds: 3rd versus
4th grade, 5th versus 6th grade, and 7th versus 8th
grade. This year, however, there was an overall grade
winner, which was 5th grade! We are proud of how
well our students know their faith. Test your Catholic
IQ and see if you’re smarter than a 5th grader!

Students gathered up their loose change to contribute
to a great cause! SSPJ School held its annual quarter
race in which each homeroom collects quarters for a
week and then lines them up along the gym floor to
find out which homeroom collected the most! The
winner was 3rd grade whose quarters went the length
of the basketball court and then some! The total
amount raised was $2,000 which will go to Catholic
charities. Pictured below are some of our generous

ALS Association Visits SSPJ School!
A representative from the ALS Association - Greater
Philadelphia Chapter, Ashley Hendrix, came to visit
SS. Philip and James School to thank the students for
the generous $500 donation they raised on spirit day!
At an assembly, Ms. Hendrix told the students about
the disease and how the money helps those afflicted
with ALS. As a thank you, each student received an

ANNUAL POOR MAN'S SUPPER will be on Sunday
March 1 in the Cafeteria at 6:30 PM. The beneficiary will be
St. Francis Inn in Kensington. They serve hot meals every
day of the week and in 2014 have served nearly 160,000
meals. It is a "second home" for some people who have
none. The Inn, established in 1979, is staffed by Sisters,
Friars, and Lay people and survives on donations. Share a
sacrificial Lenten meal of soup, bread and drink. Suggested

SEPTEMBER REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Registration for SS. Philip and James School for September 2015 will take place the week of February 23, 2015.
Please call the school office (610-363-6530 x100) any time after 9:00am to make an appointment to register your
child. Please do NOT leave a message! You must speak directly to Mrs. Davis. Please acquire all necessary
papers before your scheduled appointment time. This registration is for NEW students only. SS. Philip and
James School welcomes both Catholic and Non-Catholic children to our school.
Re-Registration information for current students will be sent home the week of February 16, 2015.
REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL
NEW
STUDENTS:
1. If Catholic, the family must be registered in SS. Philip and James Parish prior to registration for school.
2. If Catholic, a Baptism certificate must be presented, if NOT baptized in SS. Philip and James Church.
3. Child’s birth certificate.
4. Pennsylvania state law requires that all children be immunized BEFORE BEING ADMITTED
TO SCHOOL. You are required to bring the following information with you the day of registration:
A.) Copy of student’s Immunization Record
B.) Copy of most recent Physical Examination
C.) Copy of most recent Dental Exam
Physical and dental examinations are required of children entering Kindergarten/1st, and children new to the state according
to Pennsylvania State Law. Physical examinations are required for children entering Pre-K by WCASD and Archdiocesan
policy. Physical exams must include a copy of all completed immunizations.
We will accept a copy of a complete physical exam and dental exam done after September 1, 2014. We understand that
exams after these dates may not be available at the time of registration. The most recent exam will be accepted at the time
of registration. However, a new exam will need to be completed and returned to the Health Office by September 1, 2015.
5. A fee of $375.00 for the first child is required at the time of registration.
(This is a $300.00 non-refundable
registration fee that is applicable to your tuition and a $75.00 non-refundable technology fee.)
If you are registering two students the fee will be $600.00. (This is a $300.00 non-refundable registration fee
for the first child and a $150.00 non-refundable registration fee for the second child. Both of these fees are
applicable to your tuition. This fee also includes a $75.00 non-refundable technology fee for each child.)
If you are registering three or more students the fee will be a $450.00 non-refundable registration fee, which
is applicable to your tuition, plus a $75.00 non-refundable technology fee for each child.
