The brain’s ability to adapt and change in response to environment is also a pathway to resiliency and healing. The impact of violence on children is examined within a protective factors framework that highlights the latest research and recommendations on best practices. Core steps for trauma-informed programming that are applicable to a wide range of settings are discussed along with practical strategies that are making a difference for children and families experiencing domestic violence. About the Keynote Scientist, author, professor, dog musher, and founder of the Alaska Family Violence Prevention Project, Dr. Linda Chamberlain is an internationally recognized keynote speaker and champion for health issues related to domestic violence, children exposed to violence, brain development and trauma, and the amazing adolescent brain. Ongoing and overwhelming stress initiates a cascade of biochemical and physical changes that have far-reaching effects. Participants will follow the pathway of stress through the brain and body to understand how stress interferes with self-regulation and can lead to physical health problems. There is a growing body of evidence that supports the effectiveness of mind-body practices with children to manage stress and improve self-regulation. We will look at how focused breathing, mindfulness, and movement are being adapted for children from pre-school through high school age and discuss applications in a wide range of settings. A-2 Sexualization of Children Dr. Dawn Foor, CSP, Inc. This workshop explores ways in which our children are being sexualized at early ages. Clothing retailers, the advertising industry, visual media, and even parents have become perpetrators of what many would call sexual exploitation. A-3 The Effects of Violence on Children Throughout Their Lives Dr. Sandra Murray, UCI Medical Center Dept. of Pediatrics The Adverse Childhood Experiences study results were first published in 1998. Since then, there have been many additional research studies done which have confirmed the original information and expanded our knowledge on how these experiences effect the remainder of their lives. This session will discuss the ACE study, toxic stress, and how the violence experienced as children perpetuates the cycle of violence into adulthood and elder years. A-4 Sometimes Handcuffs and Jails are Not Enough When Dealing with Domestic Violence Nasario Solis, OCDA During this presentation we will explore past and present methods used by Law Enforcement and the Judicial System in dealing with Domestic Violence, including Child Abuse, Elder Abuse, and Spousal Abuse. We will explore "out of the box" methods, techniques, and teaming approaches...so bring your ideas, experience and "open mind." A-5 Commercially Sexually Exploited Children (CSEC): An Overview of What is Happening in Orange County Gary Taylor and Scott Burdick, Orange County Children and Family Services This session will present an overview about the CSEC population in Orange County Child Welfare and risk factors for these youth. An overview of state and federal regulations including SB 855 and HR 4980 will be presented. This session will also discuss Orange County’s experiences, lessons learned, promising practices, and next steps.
