PASSION SUNDAY
REFLECTION………..…OUR FATHER ……..……...CONCLUDES
Lead us not into Temptation: St Augustine once made the comment that the forbidden apples he stole
from his neighbour’s orchard tasted much better than the ones he was allowed to take from his own family’s
garden! He’s telling us something very important about ourselves here.
The adventure of knowing that we are acting outside the law gives us as much of a thrill as does the actual
wrong thing we are doing. We love to beat the system, to claim an independence from the law and the lawmakers, to prove we are in charge.
Temptations are sometimes “in-your-face” invitations to stray. Just as often they are subtle long-term slowmoving drifts away from a clean conscience. Often our temptations are embodied in the practices of our
peers and we can be caught up in them almost before we know it.
It’s impossible to be spectators in our own culture, and so the cult of the soft woolly conscience that so marks
our society, the greed of our consumerism, the fraudulent “liberty” that is the new norm in matters sexual, our
obsession with the cosmetic aspects of life, the nod-and-a-wink attitude we have to the party drug set, all
wrap us round in a seductive feel-good blanket.
When we pray that we not be led into temptation, we are demonstrating that we can be both participants in
our own culture and a prophetic gospel presence as well. We don’t always need to fit in. We don’t need to
be so “with it” that we lose sight of the path that love maps out for us. We don’t need to live with the constant
fear that marks the lives of the party set, the fear of not keeping up with each other in a mad race to who
knows where.
We all face temptation, and sometimes we all cave in. No matter how deeply or how often this occurs, love
still waits for us to return, for love alone is our true home.
And deliver us from Evil: We can pray this part of the prayer for ourselves, each other and our world. Evil is
alive and well in so many parts of the world. Evil today takes many forms: There’s an economic oppression in
which we participate, which means people work for next to no wages in many parts of the world to feed and
clothe us.
We see forced recruitment of child soldiers, human trafficking, sex slavery, religious persecution, ethnic
cleansing, domestic violence, especially against women, sexual abuse, abortion, euthanasia, homophobia.
There’s the crime of the big end of town that is its own special brand of evil, hiding behind a mask of benevolence, “success” and glamour. Tax avoidance, financial mis-management, the manipulation of the political
process for financial gain, all qualify here. We pray for our world to be delivered from such evil. Resurrection
is our only path to this deliverance as we dare to die to these evils, and rise anew with a truly clean heart.
PS: We have been reflecting now for three weeks on the words of the Our Father. The translation we use is
attributed to that well-known ex-Catholic King Henry VIII. Maybe as an exercise for your family in Holy
Week, you could sit down as a family and write your own version of the Lord’s Prayer. If it helps, you could
Google a few other versions that may stimulate your imagination. An Australian Aboriginal version and a
very poetic Feminist version come to mind.
Jesus seems to have left us only this one prayer, but what a rich and inexhaustible treasure-trove it is.
As you journey through Holy Week with your families, and reflect on the meaning of Jesus’ great prayer, you
will encounter a truly Royal Easter Show, the like you’ve never seen before!!

Y FACTOR YOUTH CAMP
Y-Factor is a camp for all high
school aged youth who want to explore their faith in a very fun and
active environment. Y-Factor is run

Archdiocesan youth agency - in

Project Compassion
Prospective Students
Each week of Lent our children are
coming forward with considerable
funds that they have raised themselves for Project Compassion.
They have shown much initiative
and generosity right through this
time of Lent and we are rightly
proud of them all.
We had the pleasure of welcoming many Year 5 young
ladies from our Feeder
schools to a morning at the
College last week. Fun learning activities were enjoyed by
both visitors and College
students. It is wonderful to be
a part of a great Community.

Loving God,
you are the home for our hearts’ deepest longings.
