Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 29, 2015 515 N. Main St • Holmen, WI 54636 608-526-4424 • [email protected] THE BANE AND THE BLESSED It was one of those wedding rehearsals I euphemistically call “memorable.” After swallowing hard several times, and patting myself on the back for being so patient, the mother of the bride finally got the best of me. I was talking with the bride and groom about their exchange of vows. The mother of the bride interrupted me with her urgent concern. “Father, when the wedding party begins to walk in, do they begin with their right foot or left foot?” I won’t tell you my response. (OK, it had something to do with coming in on pogo sticks, but I will leave it at that). The mother of the bride was more worried about the wedding than she was about the marriage. In the same vein I wonder about Catholics and Catholic leaders who worry about holy days of obligation when they should be worried about Sundays and the heart of the church year—the Holy Triduum (the Three Days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter). Everything relies on what we celebrate this week. The holy days of obligation cannot hold a candle to the Triduum. Even Christmas cannot be truly appreciated without the Triduum. After all as Christians we identify ourselves in terms of the cross, not the manger. The Church does not designate these Three Days as days of obligation because she presumes Catholics want to be present. With all my heart, as pastor and fellow believer, I invite you to celebrate these most sacred events during the Church’s most solemn prayer offered this week. Come and join us for these great days. Come and wrestle with the great questions that are our own questions. Come and be with us as we look for light in the darkness. Come and celebrate with other believers who put their faith on the line. This week we get serious about our faith in Jesus Christ. We break stride and interrupt our routines. This week we make these days like no other in the year. Come, make these days with us. And let these days make us. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE BY POPE FRANCIS PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION “This is important: let us have the courage to trust in Jesus’ mercy, to trust in his patience and to seek refuge always in the wounds of his love.” Pope Francis "They began to be distressed and to say to him, one by one, Surely it is not I?" During this dramatic scene at the Last Supper, we can picture Judas Iscariot, the betrayer, trying to play up his innocence as long as possible. He knew he had already betrayed Jesus, and if he joined in the "who, me?" ritual, he was just putting on appearances. But what about the others? The rest of the Twelve were deeply disturbed by the idea that they might betray Jesus. As we know, however, when push came to shove, Peter's fear of betraying Jesus was trumped by fear for his own life. "I do not know this man about whom you are talking," he said in order to protect himself. But notice Peter's reaction when he realized what he'd done: "He broke down and wept." FOR YOUR MARRIAGE Have you ever tried a “tech fast”? For one day resolve not to use any technology – no TV, computer, cell phone, iPod, etc. Use the time you save to pray and to be present to your family. www.foryourmarriage.com HOLY TRIDUUM CELEBRATION Mass of the Lord’s Supper (Holy Thursday) 7:00 PM on April 2 Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until 10:00 PM. How different was humble Peter's response from that of prideful Judas, who acted as if he hadn't done anything wrong: "Who, me?" Both men were unfaithful to the Lord, but only Peter immediately felt real sorrow, what we traditionally call contrition, for his sin. Celebration of the Lord’s Passion (Good Friday) 1:00 PM on April 3. The betrayers in today's Gospel readings are not just these two men. We also follow the crowd who hailed Jesus one day with "hosannas!" and a week later nailed him with their angry "crucify him!" How quickly our faith can turn fickle. For some of us, it may be easy to condemn the crowd and Judas and Peter, thinking that we would never do such a thing: "Who, me?" But today, let us resolve not to be so proud as to think we are perfect disciples. Let us have the humility of Peter who wept over his imperfections and, ultimately, repented of his sins. Only when we acknowledge that we need God's help will we be able to hail him and praise him as He truly deserves. © Liturgical Publications Inc with permission The Mass of the Lord’s Resurrection (Easter Vigil) 8:00 PM on Saturday, April 4. Easter Day Masses 8:00 AM and 10:15 AM on April 5. SACRAMENT OF PENANCE The Sacrament of Penance (Confession) is celebrated every Saturday beginning at 4:00 PM. The Sacrament also will be celebrated at 6:00 PM this Tuesday, March 31st. Please note: Tuesday of Holy Week will be the last regularly scheduled celebration of Penance until the Easter Season. SHADOW STATIONS The Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman, La Crosse, will celebrate the Sacrament of Penance from 9:00 AM-6:00 PM on Monday, March 30. What are Shadow Stations? It is a very unique and soul moving way to experience the Way of the Cross. The youth from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish will act out each of the stations from behind a screen making a visual effect of the station. The stations become “alive”. The object of the Stations is to help the faithful to make in spirit, a pilgrimage to the chief scenes of Christ's suffering and death. This has become one of the most popular Catholic/Christian devotions since the time of the crusades. People of all faiths, young and old will benefit from this awe-inspiring prayer experience (some material not suitable for children). Dates are: March 29th and April 1st at 7:00pm. We follow Jesus this week on our Lenten journey as He enters into Jerusalem. CRS Rice Bowl asks us, to prayerfully enter into our own communities, to find those who are hungry and thirsty, who need our help. How does our Lenten journey motivate us to serve those we encounter in our daily lives? Please return Rice Bowls and Mite Boxes this week. Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion 2 March 29, 2015 FAITH FORMATION WE CARE COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND The Holiest of Weeks What is the Triduum? The Triduum is its own short liturgical season. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday Easter Vigil / Easter Sunday (the 3 days are treated as one long Mass.). Lent officially ends before the Mass of the Lord's Supper, held in the evening on Holy Thursday. The Triduum begins then and goes through the Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday. It is three days - beginning on April 2nd this year - when the church tells the story of Jesus' last days, His death and His rising from the dead. Let us touch the dying, the poor, the lonely and the unwanted according to the graces we have received and let us not be ashamed or slow to do the humble work. ~Mother Teresa Family faith discussion starters: During the Triduum, we enter into the experience of Christ’s dying and rising, and we think about our own lives: YOUNG AT HEART St. Elizabeth's is most grateful for the generosity of our parishioners in their gifts of their treasure during the second collection at Mass. It is this revenue which permits us to assist those in need who come to us for assistance with their critical financial needs such as utilities, shelter, clothing and other crucial issues. We thank you for your generous response. The We Care collection will be held this weekend. St. Elizabeth’s has an active seniors group for adults 55+ called Young at Heart. Our "Thursday Gathering" meets the 2nd Thursday of the month (spring and fall) at 8:30 am for Mass, a potluck and program/games/featured speakers. Join us on Thursday, April 9th at 8:30 am for Mass followed by the potluck and a program featuring Chelsea Ellis, “My Cambodian Experience”. Running away would have been much easier than dying on the cross, but Jesus knew that he had to do what God ask of him. How do you try to do the right thing, even when it might be easier to do the wrong thing? Are you living in a way that honors Jesus’ big sacrifice on the cross? When you think about your day, can you say, “ Yes, Jesus would be proud of me today”? CREATING CARDS FOR THE HOMEBOUND God's forgiveness and grace are a beautiful gift! Do you celebrate this gift in your life? In what ways? And do you show others grace? Get your creative juices flowing and help create greeting cards for our parishioners who are homebound. It is one way to make our homebound know that the parish is thinking of and praying for them. No experience needed — Shari Ireland and Wanda Clark will guide you through the process. Please join us on Thursday, April 16th at 2:30 pm. (Will, Julianne. The Holiest of Weeks. TakeOut Family Faith on the Go. March 2015.pg4,5. Print) Faith Formation important calendar dates Wed. We are very grateful to Tom Bertram, Betty Schultz and Andrea Stupi for serving so generously, faithfully and well. Rather than elections for new members, the Pastoral Council has chosen to rely on the Holy Spirit for the selection of new members. In the Acts of the Apostles we are told that when the position of Judas was to be filled the apostles prayed and drew lots, selecting Matthias (Acts 1). Our council members will be chosen in the same fashion: prayer, trust in the Holy Spirit and drawing of names. Do you know someone whose gifts of mind and heart would benefit the parish as a member of the Pastoral Council? Parishioners are invited and encouraged to submit names of fellow parishioners who could assist the pastor in providing leadership for the parish. Those names that are suggested will then be contacted by Father Parr. By letter or in person, Father Parr will share with the possible nominee the role and responsibilities of the pastoral council. If willing to serve, each person’s name will be dropped in a hat. After prayer and relying on the Holy Spirit, the two names drawn will become new members. Father Parr will select the third member to represent part of the parish not represented (age, marital status etc.). Pastoral Council members must be registered parishioners who are fully initiated into the church (Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation). Please submit the name(s) of fellow parishioners who you believe would serve the parish well in this important regard. Please provide names no later than May1st, 2015 (fill out & turn in at parish office). I believe the following person(s) would serve our parish well on the Parish Pastoral Council.
