EASTER BLESSING OF FAMILIES
On Easter Sunday, April 5, Bishops David Zubik, William Waltersheid, and William Winter
will welcome families of the Pittsburgh Diocese to their Annual Blessing of Families at St.
Paul Cathedral in Oakland, beginning at
2:00PM. As they greet and bless your family,
they affirm and support you as a household of
love and witness to the Faith. Come and experience the Bishops’ expression of appreciation for the gift that you are, and the gifts that

THE GOOD LIFE
Jesus was “troubled” as He neared the time
of suffering. Jesus knew He could ask God
to prevent His suffering, but He chose instead to pray, “Father, glorify your
name.” (John 12:27-28). Suffering and death
are part of living - may we see them as precious opportunities to glorify God and find
His perfect place.

“WATCH AND PRAY”
Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
Happy Palm Sunday! It is time to get excited, wave your palm branches in the air and
sing with me, “HOSANNA TO THE SON OF DAVID, HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST, BLESSED IS
HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!”
Note that all of our statues have been veiled in
purple to emphasize how this week ranks above
all other weeks of the Church year. This week
we remember solemnly how far God will go to
prove His love for us, even to the point of dying,
dying on the cross. Today we are blessed to
read the Passion account according to St. Mark.
I’ve heard the comparison that reading the Passion Narratives from one of the four Gospels:
Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John, is similar to the
experience of baking bread from scratch. When
you bake bread from scratch, by the end of the
process you can’t help but be covered with
flour. In similar fashion, when you take the time
to read a Passion Narrative from one of the Gospels, at the end of the reading your soul can’t
help but be covered in God’s grace!
In recent years, when I take the time to
read and meditate on the Passion Narratives,
my heart is drawn to the experience of Jesus in
the Garden of Gethsemani. After I was ordained
a transitional deacon, the step right before being ordained a priest, I was blessed to go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land with 35 other seminarians during Christmas and New Years of 2007
into 2008. Seeing first hand where Jesus was
born, slept, ate, walked, preached, performed
his miracles, died and rose again, ascended into
heaven, and sent the Holy Spirit upon Mary and
the apostles in the upper room, changed forever
the way I read Sacred Scripture.
In the course of those two weeks, I
prayed in the Garden of Gethsemani. The locals
believe one of the oak trees in the garden,
which I prayed beside, dates back to the time
when Jesus would have prayed during that First
Holy Thursday Night. Jesus’ request to the
apostles that night seemed simple enough:
“Watch and Pray,” and yet we know how difficult
it was for the apostles to stay awake. This week
may we make an extra effort to watch and pray
with our Lord, perhaps read through the passion account outside of Mass, and let God cover
you in His graces!

Lent ends on Holy Thursday, although we
keep our fast. We cross over from Lent to
Triduum at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.
At that Last Supper, Jesus changed thebread and wine into His body and blood. He
ordained the Apostles His first priests.
GOOD FRIDAY
The solemn remembrance of Christ’s crucifixion and death on Calvary takes place during the Good Friday Scripture Service. Today we fast and abstain.
HOLY SATURDAY
The Easter Vigil begins with the Service of
Light. The priest blesses the fire, from which
the Easter candle is lit. Baptismal water is
blessed. We renew our Baptismal promises.
Easter Sunday ends the Triduum. For fifty
days we enjoy the Easter season.
