Howe's That
A grand opening
by Monte Walker
Well, today is my wife's
birthday, so I guess I'd better
say something about it so I
can continue eating at night.
All jokes aside, she's a pretty
awesome girl who us boys in
the house appreciate very
much. Happy Birthday
Michelle! But no, you still
can't have your own column.
Finally, the rain has stopped
long enough for the youth
baseball and softball leagues
to start. Ferguson Field was
overhauled and looks
brilliant thanks to the efforts
of Josh Daniels, Michael
Portman, Michael Stephens,
Laura Duree and their
spouses.
If Tom Grieve's "equalization
theory" is a true equation,
this April could be one of the
most devastating tornado
seasons in the last 100 years
or so. As of March 12, only
27 tornadoes had been
documented across the
nation. This is the slowest
start to the year, tornadowise, since the 21 tornadoes
recorded through March 12,
2003. February was eerily
quiet, with only two
tornadoes reported during the
month; one in California, the
other in Florida. The SPC
went 51 straight days without
issuing either a tornado or
severe thunderstorm watch
through February 25. This
was the longest such watchless streak since late 1986. If
the law of averages balance
out for the year, April will be
very scary through "Tornado
Alley" of Nebraska, Kansas,
Oklahoma and Texas.

Why we don’t do the ‘Easter’ Bunny, Santa
and the Tooth Fairy
by Christie Dedman
When my husband and I were dating and
eventually got engaged we were on the same
page about almost everything you talk about
in marriage counseling. Parenting styles,
money, how to argue and how to make-up
etc., check, check, check and check…
There’s one topic that doesn’t come up in
marriage counseling, well at least it didn’t in
ours, that’s belief in Santa, the ‘Easter’
Bunny and the Tooth Fairy.
While not a deal breaker of a topic, it can
cause strife if you have two very different
opinions on these mythical creatures.

Thankfully, despite our lack of discussion
before marriage, we were already on the same
page. That page was our shared conviction of
not teaching our kids to believe in lies.
a
I know I might have just stepped on some
toes with that last sentence but it’s true. If I
don’t want my kids to lie to me, why in the
world would I go to extreme lengths to
protect or perpetuate a lie just to fulfill a
secular holiday ritual? Can’t think of a
reason? Neither can I.
While some will say these three bogus
individuals bring joy and delight to childhood,
let me be frank by saying this: Joy and delight
in childhood comes from truly loving parents
who share a saving knowledge of Christ with
their children.
Nothing else. If the parents love Christ and
build a Biblical perspective in their children
based on faith in truth, everything else (like
Santa, egg laying bunnies and teeth snatching
fairies) is junk. Plain and simple.
How we dance around the secular trappings of
Easter, Christmas & losing teeth:
EASTER ISSUES
1. We call it Resurrection Sunday – That’s
what it is. It’s a day marking the resurrection
of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ from the
grave. He conquered death and offers the gift
of life. The word Easter doesn’t effectively
transmit the value of the day. Resurrection
does.
2. Dealing with relatives who insist on doing
‘Easter’ baskets – We say thank-you, toss the
fake grass and eat the candy. Done.
3. Egg hunts – The kids do hunt eggs with
friends at church.

Griffin Underwood got the start on
the mound for Howe on Tuesday
night at home. A few defensive
lapses prevented him from picking
up the win. He went five innings,
struck out six and walked two
while giving up all 5 runs.
Callisburg scored four runs in the
second on four hits and two errors.
All the runs came across after the a
two-out error, therefore, none of
Underwood's runs were earned.
The Wildcats scored again in the
fifth on a dropped fly ball in the
infield with two outs, which also
resulted in an unearned run.
Matt Griffin entered the game in
the sixth and was brilliant in his
two innings of work. He struck out
three and only gave up an infield
single in the seventh; after which
he promptly picked the runner off
of first base
Offensively, Howe hit the ball a
little bit better throughout the
lineup tonight. The 'Dogs scored
one in the first when Easton Ross
reached on an error. Quinton
Harris brought him home with an
infield single.
Howe scored four runs in the
fourth, thanks mostly due to
Callisburg's pitcher not being able
to find the strike zone. Howe drew
seven walks and got one hit in the
inning.

enough. He didn’t want second

fully God which made Him know
all about Thomas’ doubts. He
knew the rage of questions in his

the second time after His
resurrection just so Thomas could

It’s ok to come to the empty tomb
in doubt. Jesus paid the price for
your sins on the cross. “For the
wages of sin is death; but the gift
of God is eternal life through Jesus

He rose three days later as
victorious and beat the grave. He
is alive and in Heaven and no one
gets to God the Father except
through Jesus. God is who He says

In 1869, based on a proposal by Dr. Emanuel

were an instant hit and many other European
countries (in 1870, 1871, 1872) rapidly adopted
them as an inexpensive way to send written

The official figures from the golden age of the

country. That was at a time when the total

these figures do not include the vast number of

CHRISTMAS ISSUES
1. GRACE – We teach our kids that gifts are not
earned but given through grace. We don’t deserve
anything, because we’re sinners. But God’s gift to
the world was His only begotten Son Jesus. We
teach them GRACE giving – God’s Riches At
Christ’s Expense.
2. Santa decor & crafts – Yes we still have Santa
stuff and they make crafts featuring Santa but they
know he’s not real.
3. Santa gives gifts based on works the complete
opposite of God – Santa’s gift giving method is
manipulation “if you’re good you’ll get what you
want on Christmas morn.” God doesn’t
manipulate, in fact we have free will to chose a
loving God or reject His plan of salvation.

TOOTH FAIRY ISSUES
We used to give money when they lost a tooth, but
they knew it was from mom and dad. Now I don’t.
They are cool with it. They can work around the
house if they want to earn extra cash.
PS I don’t keep their teeth either. I know I’m a bad
mom.
So how do you approach these creatures?

The money raised for the American Heart
Association at the Bulldog Run on April 11 will
be added on to the Jump Rope for Heart
campaign this past fall and the higher the total
amount raised, the more credits Howe ISD
receives to purchase items for the P.E. classes.
This event helps raise money for the Howe
Memorial Scholarship that helps our current
seniors, helps the American Cancer Association,
and also the P.E. classes.
