Into His Harvest
He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.
Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.”
Luke 10:2
Are You Ready to Learn?
It was one of the most terrifying
moments in my life – yet one that had to
come eventually and one that, at least on
paper, I was prepared for. It was the first
time that I was to be in an airplane as an
instructor. When you are by yourself, you
are at least in control of your own destiny.
When you are a student with an instructor
on board you have a sense that, even in the
worst of situations, your instructor will bail
you out. But, when you ARE the instructor, your life hangs not just in your own
hands, but in the hands of someone who
knows far less about airplanes than you do.
And when you only have 280 hours in an
airplane, you know precious little about
flying airplanes. Thanks to the FAA, however, you can be qualified to be a flight
instructor. There I sat as living proof.
An old adage is that no one in the
class learns as much as the teacher. Since
that first flight lesson I have come to believe that saying more than you will know.
Not only must the teacher prepare for
what he or she wants to present, but the
teacher with integrity will
also prepare for the unexpected – sort of like antici-

pating every attempt your flight student
will make to inadvertently kill you. A good
teacher must then teach with one eye from
the perspective of the lectern (knowing
what must be taught), but also from the
classroom (knowing what questions will
arise and what issues will develop). Considering yourself a teacher is scary stuff. It is
not without reason that many people hold
James 3:1 as their favorite verse in the Bible, “Let not many of you become teachers, brethren, for you know that we who
teach shall be judged with greater strictness.”
of Hebrews makes is this: at some point it
is time to grow up, give up being treated
like a grammar school child and become a
mature adult. One way to do that is to become a teacher.
Volunteering to be a teacher
might be scary stuff – but you know what?
You can do it! At the very least you can
volunteer to be an assistant, just to sit with
a teacher and be a helper. Become an apprentice. Learn by doing. And, look at it
this way – no student ever killed his or her
Bible teacher by putting the kitchen table
into an unrecoverable spin.
I know with our recent lessons on
entering into God’s harvest that many of
you are saying, “Whew, thank goodness for
James 3:1! I can’t be a teacher because I do
not know enough!” While I do not wish to
contradict Bro. James, another passage of
Scripture might also be applicable here as
well, “For though by this time you ought
to be teachers, you need some one to teach
you again the first principles of God’s
word. You need milk, not solid food; for
everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in
the word of righteousness, for he is a
child.” (Heb. 5:12-13) The point the author
I never would have volunteered
myself to be a flight instructor with 280
hours of flight time. But I had the instruction. My instructors and flight examiners
all said I was ready. We had students lining
up for their first lessons. I was needed. I
wasn’t perfect, and sometimes it was flatout ugly, and boy did I learn a lot about
flying when I started teaching!

diagnosed with Henoch Schonlein Purpura (HSP). He will
have weekly lab work until he can see a hematologist in Lubbock on April 2.

Into His Harvest — Mobilization
Our focus on evangelism, going into
His harvest, will include six areas of
service. These are the areas of
“good works” that were discussed in the Sunday, March 1 sermon. Please consider where
your interests and God-given talents lie and
sign up in the area where you will be most
useful in the kingdom. There is an area where
YOU are needed! Sign-up sheets are on the
foyer table.

Children’s Worship Needs You!
We are in need of a few volunteers to help during Children’s
Worship. We mostly need an
extra pair of hands to help with the younger
ones. If you can help, please sign-up or talk
with Sherri Chenault or Katie Heflin.
College Ministry
If anyone wants to help reach out
to the students at the Student Center, you are welcome to come eat
with us on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 p.m.
Even if you don’t cook or help, strike up conversations. Opportunities abound each Tuesday to go into the harvest.
Ladies’ Bible Class
Ladies Bible class meets each Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the multi-purpose
room. All ladies are invited!

4th Sunday Pot Luck Luncheon
This Sunday, March 22, we will
have our monthly pot luck luncheon after the morning worship
service in the multi-purpose room. Please
bring enough food for your family and extra to
share with guests.
Education Ministry Luncheon
There will be a luncheon for the Education Ministry on Sunday, March 29
for both children and adult teachers
and others interested in the biblical
education of the congregation. We will discuss
the direction of the education ministry overall,
as well as plans for the summer specifically.
Area-Wide 5th Sunday Singing
The Area-Wide 5th Sunday Singing
will be hosted by Southside Church
of Christ on Sunday, March 29 at 5:00 p.m.
Help is Needed
You may have heard that a replica of
the Tabernacle is coming to Portales,
as an opportunity to experience an
important aspect of the ancient Israelite religious life, but from a Christian perspective. The Tabernacle is here from 3/274/5. We have volunteered to staff the Tabernacle on Friday, April 3. We need seven volunteers for three shifts, 21 volunteers in total. The shifts are 11-2:30, 2:30-6, and 69. Please see David to sign up and talk about
what role you want to do.

Local Opportunity
We have a local opportunity for
helping women in need of job
skills. A 13 week class (Bridge to
Hope) begins the 3rd week of March. There
will be 3 classes per week for 13 weeks held at
First Baptist Church, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on
Tuesdays and Thursdays and on Thursday
evenings 6:00-9:00 p.m. The class is free and
taught through Christian Women’s Job Corps
of Portales. If you need more information,
David can put you in contact with the site
coordinator.
Polycarp Movie
A movie about the historical figure
Polycarp, Christian martyr, will be
shown here on Saturday, April 4, at
2:00 p.m. We need people to volunteer to assist with childcare; talk to
David, if you can assist. We will sign up people to help provide refreshments as the date
draws closer. Mainly we encourage our own
members to attend and invite others. It is
probably not best for small children, but is
family friendly (serious subject matter, but no
gore, language, or inappropriate material). Please be making your plans to attend! It
is the day before Easter and a great time to
invite our neighbors to spend some time with
us!
Annual Golf Tournament
Our Annual Golf tournament is
scheduled for Saturday, April 11,
starting at 10:00 a.m. (Mt. Time) at
the Farwell Country Club. The cost
is $25 per person for 18 holes of golf and cart
plus any donation you would like to make for
the cost of food. If you would like to participate, please sign-up on the foyer table. If you
