4-H Children’s Art Exchange with China
Through the Michigan 4-H
Children’s Art Exchange,
youth in grades K-8 are invited to send “visual letters”,
to children their own ages in
China. Teaching kits to facilitate teaching about China
and making art are now
available. The kit can easily
be incorporated into a les-
son plan, or other groups
can use the kit at a meetings
or event. Groups using the
kit may submit artwork to the
4-H office by April 1, 2014. A
selection of Macomb County
artwork will be sent to the
state level. Artwork selected
at the state level will be sent
to China as a gift to the
children of China. Artwork
remaining at the state level
will be included in the 2014
online exhibit. Learn more
and view past exhibits online
at http://4h.msue.msu.edu/
programs/arts/china_project.
Call Cory Leonard at 586783-8163 for information or
to reserve the kit.

Top 10 Things Many Parents Don’t Know About Teen Driving
Last week was National Teen Driver
Safety Week (Oct. 20-26). GM and
the GM Foundation, along with traffic
safety advocates across the country,
are working to raise awareness
about why teen drivers crash and
how to prevent these crashes. One
of the organizations that GM
supports is the National Safety
Council, a non-profit group focused
on research, education and
advocacy on vehicle safety and,
specifically, teen driving.
Many studies have shown that the
level of parent involvement with new
teen drivers makes a difference and
this year’s National Teen Driver
Safety Week theme “It takes two:
Shared expectations for parents and
teens for driving,” is in lockstep with
GM’s and the Council’s recent focus
on parent education around teen
driver safety. DriveitHOME, an
initiative of NSC with support from
GM and the GM Foundation, is a
website created for parents by
parents that focuses on the most
important things parents can do to
protect teen drivers.
To help parents understand the
scope of the problem, the National
Safety Council compiled a list of the
top 10 things most parents don’t
know about teen driving:
•
Car crashes are the leading
cause of death for teens in the U.S.
•
Most dangerous time of a teen
driver’s life is the first 12 months
after receiving a license.
•
A teen driver’s crash risk is three
times that of drivers ages 20 and
older.
•
Teens crash most often because
they are inexperienced – not
because they take more risks behind
the wheel.
•
Crash risk remains high after licensure. In fact, young drivers’ crash risk
does not significantly begin decreasing
until age 25.
Share the list with your friends and
families with teen drivers and visit
driveithome.org for educational materials, tips and much more.
- Submitted by Michelle Porter, Volunteer
Ray’s Riding Rascals 4-H Club
•
Teen passengers are one of the
biggest distractions for teen drivers.
Just one teen raises a teen driver’s
fatal crash risk 44 percent. Two
passengers double the fatal crash
risk. Three or more quadruples
crash risk.
•
Most fatal nighttime crashes
involving teen drivers happen
between 9 p.m. and midnight.
•
More than half of teens killed in
car crashes were not restrained by
a seatbelt.
•
Most states’ teen driving laws
and restrictions do not adequately
protect teen drivers from the most
serious crash risks.
•
Teens really do learn to drive
from watching their parents. A survey
from The Allstate Foundation found
80 percent of teens cite their parents
as having the most influence over
teen’s driving habits.
