PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Spring has arrived and as we all anticipate the warmer weather, great things in education
continue to happen at DSBN Academy. Student achievement is at the forefront of everything we do. Teachers continue to work on the goals they set forth in our School Improvement Plan and work together in professional learning teams to find the best strategies to
meet the needs of the students in their classes. Increasing understanding of mathematics
instruction, incorporating thinking skills to improve students’ ability to make informed decisions, and comprehension strategies in all subjects are some of the main goals teachers
and students are working on together. We all continue to encourage our students to focus, put forth their best effort and exemplify our CORE values. Parents can help by
checking your child’s organizer daily, communicating with their teachers if there are any
questions, talking with your child when they get home about what questions they asked
that day and to have them explain the concepts they learned. The best homework that students can do is daily reading of everything from novels to magazines to newspapers, and
review of their lessons from the day by re-teaching someone at home.

Cooperation
DSBN Academy’s character trait for May is Cooperation. Cooperation means working together for a common purpose. At DSBN Academy we continually focus on building a community of learners. This happens when people re‐
spect and care for each other. Learning is a social process and cooperation is the key. Together, we are stronger than we are individually. Helping each other succeed strengthens everyone. Cooperation is the key to the synergy associated with great accomplishments. Nothing meaningful in life can be accomplished on one’s own. There have always been and will always be people along the way who will help us move forward. No matter what the task, working cooperatively toward a common goal or purpose will always produce greater results than working alone. DSBN Road Race - Sunday April 26th, 2015

Did you know: Baby Teeth are Very Important!
Tooth decay is the number one
chronic disease of children.
Tooth decay can lead to pain,
infection, difficulties eating,
speech problems, self-esteem
issues, decrease school attendance and poor overall health.
Niagara Region Public Health
(NRPH) screens approximately
25,000 students each year in elementary schools 38% of these
students have tooth decay,
which is unacceptably high
Baby teeth are important! Early
preventive care is critical in reducing the likelihood of your
child developing painful and
serious health problems later in
life.
Fluoride is not added into our
water supply. Therefore, it is recommended that all residents
brush their teeth twice daily with
fluoridated toothpaste as soon as
the first baby tooth erupts (birth
to three years – rice grain size
portion, three years and older –
pea-size portion of fluoride toothpaste)
• Floss your child’s teeth daily
until age eight
• Ensure your child eats a
healthy diet and limits sugary
drinks and snacks (ex. fruit rollups, gummies and juice boxes)
• Children should visit at dentist every year starting at their
first birthday to prevent problems
from starting
Fluoride varnish and sealant
applications are very effective in
preventing tooth decay
•
NRPH has free programs and
preventive services to assist children and youth in getting the
dental health care they need.

the Dental Line at 905-688-8248 or

Elementary School Dental Screening
Program
A Public Health registered dental hygienist is scheduled to visit
our school on April 30th 2015 to provide dental screening to students in grade 6
and 8 as required under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
During this time the registered dental hygienist will perform a visual inspection
of each child to determine his/her dental needs. Parents will be contacted if
their child requires immediate dental care. Public Health dental programs may
financially assist children who do not have access to required dental care.
Please contact the Public Health dental program for any of the following:
If you do NOT wish your child to participate in the dental screening.
If your child is not in one of the targeted grades and you would like him/her
to participate.
Call the Dental Health Information at 905-688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074 ext. 7399
