Pregnancy and your hand
Common Conditions
Pregnancy causes the hormone levels in
your body to change significantly, both
during pregnancy and following the
birth of your baby. Progesterone levels
are extraordinarily high which causes a
loosening of the ligaments throughout
your body and can affect the small joints
of your hand. You also have increased
fluid retention which causes swelling
around joints. This can make new mothers
more prone to conditions such as:
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Increased swelling causing
compression of a nerve in your
wrist that results in numbness,
pins and needles and hand
weakness. Can be successfully
treated and resolved following
the birth of your baby.
de Quervain’s Tenosynovitis
• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Inflammation of the tendon
sheath in your wrist that causes
burning pain with movement of
the thumb and wrist. Pain usually
starts pre-birth and without
treatment worsens throughout
the following year.
• de Quervain’s Tenosynovitis
• Trigger Finger
• Wrist Instability
Once your baby is born...
Following the birth of your baby you will
be using your hands in many new ways
as a new mother.
Repetitive tasks such as lifting and
dressing can cause your wrist and
tendons to become painful and inflamed.
Speak to your hand therapist about
prevention strategies.
Trigger Finger/Thumb
Thickening of a tendon
that causes it to ‘catch’ when
bending and straightening your
finger/thumb. If caught early this
can be treated simply with a
small splint.
