It was commissioned by the Integrated Children’s Services Board and funded by the Aberdeen City Council Early Years, Families and Vulnerable Learners Team. The purpose of the Audit is to ensure that the Integrated Children’s Services Board has the information necessary to plan and deliver services for children, young people and their families. The Audit examines the key characteristics of Aberdeen’s 0-25 year population and their service requirements. It provides a planning tool for the Integrated Children’s Services Board and will help to inform policy development. It does not measure performance against local improvement objectives as these are addressed in the Integrated Children’s Services Plan and the Single Outcome Agreement. Most of the data in the Audit is presented for Aberdeen together with equivalent data for Scotland and other main cities. Where education data is shown and where appropriate, the Council’s five comparator authorities – Argyll & Bute, Dundee, Edinburgh, Renfrewshire and South Ayrshire have been used. In some thematic areas the information is presented at neighbourhood level. The Audit will not be printed this year but will be published on Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeen Getting it Right websites. Please cascade to colleagues within your Outcome Groups, services and teams as appropriate. Please note that this is the last time the Audit will be produced in this format. The Integrated Children’s Services Board is currently reviewing its data collection and performance management across integrated children’s services and it is likely that a smaller version of the Audit will be produced in future. http://aberdeengettingitright.org.uk/docs/Children%20and%20Young%20People’s%20Audit%202014-15%20 Final%20Version.pdf The Cinnamon Trust The Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity for the terminally ill and people in their later years and their much loved, much needed companion animals. We urgently need dog walking volunteers in Bridge of Don who are able to offer some much needed walks for a lovely 4 year old Westie. What happens if illness, injury or just the fact that we all get older eventually affects our ability to look after our four legged companions? A large number of elderly or ill pet owners become very worried about their ability to care for their pets, and feel that their only option is to rehome them, this is where our national network of dedicated volunteers step in to offer support enabling them to stay together. We’ll walk the dog for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital care, we’ll fetch the cat food, even clean out the bird cage or litter trays. We always need new volunteers even if you can only spare an hour a week we would love to hear from you, If anyone can help please call during office hours 01736 758707 or via email [email protected] Please also check out our website for more details www.cinnamon.org.uk ACVO NEWS | NEWS | FUNDING | LOCAL EVENTS | NATIONAL EVENTS | VACANCIES | VOLUNTEERING Page 3 NEWS New Charity Offering Help to City Residents Changes Location to Offer an Enhanced Service I-Connect North East , an Aberdeen charity established in September, is moving from the Aberdeen Indoor Market to a more central location in order to enhance their provision to all. I-Connect North East aims to inform and help residents to find opportunities and activities in their local communities. They can also help with benefits, form filling, general information and Self Directed Support. Self Directed Support is a new scheme implemented in April 2014 whereby recipients of social care budgets can chose to control that budget to fulfil positive outcomes within their communities. I-Connect North east is a drop in service where anyone can get free confidential help and advice. From March 2015, I-Connect North East will be located at 491 Union Street. The new location is wheelchair accessible, very central and near bus stops. It offers a meeting room for community groups to hold meetings. The new office also has wheelchair accessible toilets and one to one room for anyone who wishes to discuss sensitive subjects. Open Monday to Friday from 9 to 5 and also Saturdays from 9 to 12, the space could also be sued in evenings to develop community opportunities. Local Area Coordination, a service offering short term support for adults with learning disabilities, will also move in with I-Connect North East, making the new office a real hub of opportunities and signposting. Over the 12-month period to the end of March 2015, Gordon Rural Action’s advisers helped nearly 3,000 people. Visitors to the main advice centres in Huntly, Inverurie and Ellon have sought help in dealing with 24,000 problems ranging from benefits entitlement, welfare rights and employment to housing, consumer rights, debt management, evictions and bankruptcy. In that time, GRA’s services achieved a staggering £2.4 million in client financial gain. The organisation is now preparing for the rollout of Universal Credit to Jobcentres in Aberdeenshire, which is scheduled to commence on May 25 2015. Initially, this will involve new claimants at the Banff, Fraserburgh and Peterhead JobcentrePlus offices. North East Sensory Services (NESS), which provides joint sensory services to over 4,500 people, is hosting a ‘Dine in the Dark’ event in June. The experience allows restaurants customers to re-evaluate their approach to eating, as they enjoy a meal while blindfolded. NESS, which is Aberdeen’s second oldest charity, exists to promote the needs of people with a sight or hearing loss and support them to overcome practical and emotional challenges and also to achieve greater independence. ‘Dine in the Dark’, which is taking place at Café Coast on Friday, 12th June at 7.30pm, is one of the group’s most popular events, enabling diners to experience how the senses change when one is not working. The concept began in Paris in the 19th century, to give seeing people the chance to understand what it is like to be blind, and the popular format has grown with restaurants now open in London, Paris, London, Barcelona, New York, St Petersburg and Montreal. Diners find that the lack of bright lights and distraction helps them to enjoy the textures, smells and tastes of the food they are eating. Neil Skene, fundraising co-ordinator for NESS said: “Our Dine in the Dark evenings are extremely popular as eating a meal without sight is quite a unique experience. Not only do customers have great fun trying to work out what they are eating, they discover how amazing their other senses are. “In reality, your other senses are not enhanced when one sense is not working, however you automatically concentrate more and listen better, paying more attention to the information your senses give you.” Tickets are on sale from Café Coast, tel 01224 594488, priced at £30. CLAN Cancer Support Set for New Era CLAN Cancer Support chief executive Debbie Thomson is preparing to pass on the baton after more than 14 successful years with the north-east charity. Mrs Thomson will stand down from the post in July and has been praised for her role in spearheading the organisation’s growth and cementing its reputation as a leader in its field. Under her stewardship, CLAN has grown from employing a team of five to a staff of over 60 and has expanded its reach from Aberdeen to provide services throughout Aberdeenshire and Moray as well as in Shetland and Orkney. Highlights included the planning, construction and launch of the £3 million purpose built CLAN House and CLAN Haven facilities on Westburn Road in Aberdeen in addition to a year of celebrations to mark the charity’s 30th anniversary in 2013. Kenny Anderson, CLAN chairman, said: “Debbie has been integral to everything that has been achieved during her time as chief executive. On behalf of the board and the entire CLAN family, I must thank her for her passion, commitment and forward thinking. Audio Description Services at His Majesty’s Theatre Audio description is a commentary for people with sight problems who have difficulty seeing a stage. In theatre, it helps them to follow what is going on by describing the essential action, body language, facial expressions, costume and scenery. Since 2000, volunteers at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen have been providing a service to people with sight problems. The Audio Describer’s Association (Aberdeen) which provides the service is a small group of dedicated Theatre lovers who have undergone training. Audio described performances usually take place on Saturday Matinee performances. A headset is required for this service and will be provided by the Theatre front of house team before the show begins. Touch Tours enable people with sight problems to experience the stage, feel the set, touch the props and the costumes which helps to build a picture of the show when listening to the Audio Description. A Touch Tour will take place prior to most Audio Described performances. Individuals are then “matched” to potentially suitable research projects. Alzheimer Scotland is providing support to the JDR service across Scotland and is now planning to base the JDR Helpdesk service alongside the current Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Helpline service. Opportunity Alzheimer Scotland is seeking volunteers with excellent people skills who would be able to support those without their own internet access to register on Join Dementia Research. The volunteer will be comfortable using a computer whilst on the phone. Each registration takes between 20 and 40 minutes, with more time required if the individual being registered has dementia. Full training on the JDR system will be given, as well as speaking and listening skills training. The Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Helpline staff will be available to support volunteers in this interesting initiative. Find out more Please e-mail or call Elaine Harley, Dementia Helpline Manager ([email protected] phone 0131 243 1453) or Marion McGowan, JDR Project Lead ([email protected] phone 0141 410 0100) for more information, and to register your interest. An information and training day is planned for May/early June. The kids benefit from the support, training and guidance of a dedicated team of voluntary staff, civilian assistants and parental supporters. We are actively looking for new members of staff (18+) to assist in the running of our unit. You have the option of joining as a civilian instructor or as a uniformed member of staff. Civilian Instructor is a role ideally suited to someone who can contribute to the unit but does not wish to enroll as a fully uniformed member of staff. All we ask is that you give up some time each week and the occasional weekend throughout the year. Uniformed Staff are responsible for the training of cadets within the Corps. Specialised skills can be developed at Sea Cadet training centres throughout the country. You will initially be interviewed to join as a Civilian Instructor and will be required to go through an enhanced criminal records check. Once this has been done you will work towards becoming a Petty Officer (SCC). You will be required to attend a Sea Cadet Instructors Qualifying course at one of our National Training Centres, obtain a First Aid qualification as well as receive training and assessment in Instructional Methods.
