Organised by Aberdeen City Council/Community Planning Aberdeen and Pathways the launch of Volunteering Bytes provided people with the opportunity to learn more about this fantastic new initiative, view Volunteering Bytes and provide feedback, with ipads available for people to have a go too. Lyndsay Johnstone and Julie Milne from Aberdeen City Council provided participants with background to Volunteering Bytes and how it connects to the Community Planning Aberdeen Volunteering Strategy ‘Making the Difference: Volunteering in Aberdeen’ which is bringing everyone together to help make Aberdeen the best place to volunteer. Volunteering Bytes links to existing volunteering promotional sources and also has new, exciting features which provide another good source for people to get involved in volunteering. It is framed around Scottish Government priorities and will particularly be useful in engaging more people in community activities and volunteering/providing greater access to volunteering via mobile devices. This includes micro volunteering-small actions that make a difference, that can be done anytime, anyplace, anywhere, on the bus or even at home in your pyjamas! The Lord Provost Councillor George Adam officially launched Volunteering Bytes and once again gave his strong support to volunteering in Aberdeen City and the important contribution volunteers make to day to day life in Aberdeen. At their inverurie, premises on Burghmuir Circle, the staff team support 27 trainees who learn everything in a kitchen environment, including soups, sandwiches, baking and hot meals. They also gain independent living skills by undertaking tasks such as recycling, ironing and cleaning. There is also the opportunity for the trainees when they work alongside staff serving customers in the coffee shop. The structured training programme gives the trainees a sense of wellbeing, confidence and self-esteem. All of the trainees receive certificates acknowledging their skills, with some achieving NVQ qualifications to aid progression into main stream employment. Recently, Fly Cup received a grant from Comic Relief which allowed them to extend their premises into the unit above the coffee shop. The premises, will eventually be turned into conference and meeting space for use by other organisations and individuals. Currently, the space is being rented for office use to groups and organisations, whilst the Management Team at Fly Cup gain planning permission and raise funds for additional toilets and petitioning to enable full leasing for groups of up to 50 individuals. However, the team at Fly Cup are also delighted to announce that they are expanding and have recently taken over the coffee shop and kitchen within the Axis centre at Newmachar. Business Manager, Denise Belshaw tells us: “We were approached by the Management Team of the Axis Centre at the beginning of the year to ascertain whether we might be interested in taking the lease to support their coffee shop. I immediately saw the potential to enable us to offer the same training and employment opportunities for adults with learning difficulties living in the Dyce and coastal villages around the area, who are not able to access Inverurie so easily. We took over the lease at Newmachar in March. We now have new staff in place and are open Monday to Saturday from 9.00 – 4.00 pm.” “We hope that by the beginning of June our first trainees will be in place.” The team at Fly Cup are delighted with the support they are receiving from the local community, with feedback being very positive. In the coming weeks, it is intended to introduce the Fly Cup menu, and to offer the “Bus pass Special” and Children’s Platters, which are so popular at the Inverurie Fly Cup. Denise explains. We offer anyone with a bus pass a two course lunch for £5.00 one day a week and the children’s platter at £2.55. Both options are a real hit with our customers in Inverurie and I feel sure it will be in Newmachar. Should you wish any further information about Fly Cup or the new coffee shop, then do not hesitate to contact Denise on 01467 625645, visit their facebook page flycup-catering or email [email protected]. Mental Health Aberdeen (MHA) has been gifted paint from Spencer Coatings Limited which is being used to revamp its central office and create an uplifting environment for workers and visitors. The painting and coatings manufacturer first assisted the charity 14 years ago by donating materials to MHA’s Aberdeen Supported Housing Project - and has now repeated the kind gesture. Fiona Mooney, fundraising and marketing manager at MHA, said: “We approached Spencer Coatings Limited as they have helped us in the past and we are absolutely delighted that they have assisted us again. Their kind donation of a large amount of paint means we can begin to brighten up our office space. We have had corporate volunteers from ADIL, Canadian Natural Resources, Anderson Anderson Brown and KCA Deutag to do the painting work and they worked tirelessly to transform our four offices and hallway within our central office building. The volunteers have also helped with the arduous task of moving our office furniture. “The office is looking so much brighter already and we are so grateful to both Spencer Coatings Limited and our volunteers for giving up their time to help us. It makes such a difference for our visitors to be able to come to a warm, bright, welcoming place and we want to thank everyone involved who is helping us transform the space.” Linda Stronach of Spencer Coating Limited, said: “We were happy to get involved and assist such a worthy local charity by donating our products to help enhance the charity’s premises. MHA works hard to deliver their vital services in Aberdeen and throughout the north-east and we are pleased we were able to help in this way.” MHA was founded in 1950 and provides support services, counselling and advice to people affected by challenges related to mental health and wellbeing. Services are available for children from the age of 12 and adults. The organisation was among the first to provide community care – with its first residential project, a group home for discharged psychiatric patients, opened more than 35 years ago. MHA has also been providing day services continuously for over 60 years. An attempt at bringing key items together, no attempt at being definitive (or balanced!): • Labour’s policies of particular interest: repeal of the Lobbying Act and commitment to early intervention both welcomed, Living Wage for public service providers could mean higher wage bills, concern that NHS preferred provider policy might limit charities. various measures to strengthen not-for-profit services for children and young people, restrictions for private schools on rate relief. • Green: repealing the Lobbying Act, increasing international aid, support for social enterprises in particular co-ops, working as a strong enabling force for the voluntary sector in government. • Conservatives: “resurrection for the Big Society”, 3 days volunteering leave for those in large companies and the public sector, commitments on international aid and growing National Citizen Service, more social impact bonds and payment-by-results. • Liberal Democrats: open public procurement for charities, review the Lobbying Act, new and improved Work Programme, new community banking sector. Also added to Election 2015 are various policy manifestos put forward by voluntary sector bodies. These include: • Charity Finance Group has outlined five policy priorities, including a focus on gift aid and irrecoverable VAT and changes in the rules around pensions. • ‘One hundred days for early action – time for government to put prevention first’ has been published by Community Links and Early Action Task Force. NPC’s Chief Exec argues for a revolutionary new approach both in Whitehall and among service providers as the only way to ensure early action makes progress reducing social problems. • An article from Cherry Orchard Garden Service puts the case for a new Access to Volunteering fund, as put forward in NCVO’s manifesto, to help with the additional costs in creating opportunities for disabled volunteers. • Social Enterprise Scotland and the Health and Social Care Alliance manifestos call on Scottish politicians to commit to greater public participation in politics and democracy. Consultation on Aberdeen City Council Gaelic Language Plan The Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 was passed by the Scottish Parliament with a view to securing the status of the Gaelic language as an official language of Scotland commanding equal respect to the English language. One of the key features of the 2005 Act is the provision enabling Bòrd na Gàidhlig to require public bodies to prepare Gaelic Language Plans. This provision was designed to ensure that the public sector in Scotland plays its part in creating a sustainable future for Gaelic by raising its status and profile and creating practical opportunities for its use. ACC’s intention is to present the Plan for consideration to the Finance, Policy and Resources Committee at its meeting of 9th June with the Plan then being submitted to Bòrd na Gàidhlig on 12th June. In theatre, it helps them to follow what is going on by describing the essential action, body language, facial expressions, costume and scenery. Since 2000, volunteers at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen have been providing a service to people with sight problems. The Audio Describer’s Association (Aberdeen) which provides the service is a small group of dedicated Theatre lovers who have undergone training. Audio described performances usually take place on Saturday Matinee performances. A headset is required for this service and will be provided by the Theatre front of house team before the show begins. Touch Tours enable people with sight problems to experience the stage, feel the set, touch the props and the costumes which helps to build a picture of the show when listening to the Audio Description. A Touch Tour will take place prior to most Audio Described performances. Do you have business skills and time available to assist in your local community? Do you run an organisation which has skills gaps within its personnel? Volunteering is fun, beneficial, valued and makes a real difference to society. Volunteers are not paid for their time and energy which makes them priceless to an organisation. Volunteering is a choice made by an individual to be involved in an activity which benefits either the environment, local community or someone. Many of us have had or are having careers through which we have gained much experience and expertise. Volunteering is a means where your business skills can be put to good use for the benefit of organisations operating across a wide spectrum of communities throughout our great city of Aberdeen. Not only does volunteering make a big difference in the lives of others, it can also provide you with the experience needed to further your career or keep your skills up to date. Volunteers have the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people, have fun, gain a sense of belonging in the local community and help a favourite charity achieve far more than would otherwise be possible. Volunteers make a huge difference. In Aberdeen it is estimated around 52,000 people volunteer, contributing around 4.4 million hours every year. The economic impact of volunteering to Aberdeen is thought to be a staggering £67.3 million annually. With so many opportunities there has never been a better time to get involved in volunteering. ACVO exists to involve, represent, support and develop not-forprofit organisations by finding business skilled volunteers to fill gaps in a charity’s personnel base. The hours of volunteering are flexible to fit in with a volunteer’s availability. ACVO’S BUSINESS SKILLED VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME The Business Skilled Volunteers Programme operates within the Aberdeen city boundary and aims to match business skilled volunteers and professionals to organisations requiring specific skills, allowing the organisation to expand its range of activities. Many organisations desperately need additional resources but lack the time or finances needed to recruit suitably skilled workers. Organisations are in constant need of volunteers with skills in areas such as Accountancy, Business Planning, Human Resources and staffing issues, Information Technology, Training, Marketing, Project Management, Strategic Management and Training. ACVO assists business-skilled volunteers find challenging and rewarding opportunities, often in roles where they can provide leadership, advice and professional support. Skilled volunteers can have a major impact on the future success of the organisation, perhaps becoming a trustee on the board of management to guide it through difficult decisions. Contact Ian Gourlay ([email protected]), the Skilled Volunteer Advisor at AVCO who produces a list of organisation’s skills gaps which is sent to potential volunteers at the beginning of each month. He’s waiting to hear from you!
