On Micro volunteering Day 2015 ACVO were delighted to be part of
the launch of Scotland’s first dedicated mobile optimised website for
micro volunteering-Volunteering Bytes.
This event aims to bring together leaders from
across sectors to network and potentially find
a match for a Leadership Exchange. Delegates
will be given a chance to speed network and
meet others interested in the Leadership
Exchange Programme.
Organised by Aberdeen City Council/Community Planning Aberdeen and Pathways the launch of Volunteering Bytes
provided people with the opportunity to learn more about this fantastic new initiative, view Volunteering Bytes and provide
feedback, with ipads available for people to have a go too. Lyndsay Johnstone and Julie Milne from Aberdeen City Council
provided participants with background to Volunteering Bytes and how it connects to the Community Planning Aberdeen
Volunteering Strategy ‘Making the Difference: Volunteering in Aberdeen’ which is bringing everyone together to help make
Aberdeen the best place to volunteer.
Volunteering Bytes links to existing volunteering promotional sources and also has new, exciting features which provide
another good source for people to get involved in volunteering. It is framed around Scottish Government priorities and
will particularly be useful in engaging more people in community activities and volunteering/providing greater access to
volunteering via mobile devices. This includes micro volunteering-small actions that make a difference, that can be done
anytime, anyplace, anywhere, on the bus or even at home in your pyjamas!
The Lord Provost Councillor George Adam officially launched Volunteering Bytes and once again gave his strong support to
volunteering in Aberdeen City and the important contribution volunteers make to day to day life in Aberdeen.

Gregor provides SHMU-FM listeners with information regarding
superb work he undertakes supporting the Youth Outreach Bus
Trust. Gregor explains that The Youth Outreach Bus or ‘Red Bus’ as
it has become known is a converted double decker bus which has

with the young people attending in a positive and encouraging manner. The bus currently operates in Dyce and
Seaton, but is mobile and is actively looking to expand to working in other parts of Aberdeen as well. Gregor
states that this is an exciting and unique opportunity to help with the only mobile youth drop in centre like this in
Aberdeen. A great opportunity to help, make a difference for young people and the local community and be part

New Opportunities for the Trainees
at Fly Cup
Fly Cup Catering based in Inverurie provides training
and employment opportunities for adults with
learning difficulties (trainees) in the catering sector.
At their inverurie, premises on Burghmuir Circle, the
staff team support 27 trainees who learn everything in
a kitchen environment, including soups, sandwiches,
baking and hot meals. They also gain independent
living skills by undertaking tasks such as recycling,
ironing and cleaning. There is also the opportunity for
the trainees when they work alongside staff serving
customers in the coffee shop. The structured training programme gives the trainees a sense of wellbeing, confidence and
self-esteem. All of the trainees receive certificates acknowledging their skills, with some achieving NVQ qualifications to aid
progression into main stream employment.
Recently, Fly Cup received a grant from Comic Relief which allowed them to extend their premises into the unit above the
coffee shop. The premises, will eventually be turned into conference and meeting space for use by other organisations and
individuals. Currently, the space is being rented for office use to groups and organisations, whilst the Management Team
at Fly Cup gain planning permission and raise funds for additional toilets and petitioning to enable full leasing for groups of
up to 50 individuals.
However, the team at Fly Cup are also delighted to announce that they are expanding and have recently taken over the
coffee shop and kitchen within the Axis centre at Newmachar. Business Manager, Denise Belshaw tells us:
“We were approached by the Management Team of the Axis Centre at the beginning of the year to ascertain whether we
might be interested in taking the lease to support their coffee shop. I immediately saw the potential to enable us to offer
the same training and employment opportunities for adults with learning difficulties living in the Dyce and coastal villages
around the area, who are not able to access Inverurie so easily.
We took over the lease at Newmachar in March. We now have new staff in place and are open Monday to Saturday from
9.00 – 4.00 pm.”
“We hope that by the beginning of June our first trainees will be in place.”
The team at Fly Cup are delighted with the support they are receiving from the local community, with feedback being
very positive. In the coming weeks, it is intended to introduce the Fly Cup menu, and to offer the “Bus pass Special” and
Children’s Platters, which are so popular at the Inverurie Fly Cup. Denise explains.
We offer anyone with a bus pass a two course lunch for £5.00 one day a week and the children’s platter at £2.55. Both
options are a real hit with our customers in Inverurie and I feel sure it will be in Newmachar.
Should you wish any further information about Fly Cup or the new coffee shop, then do not hesitate to contact Denise on
01467 625645, visit their facebook page flycup-catering or email [email protected].

Mental Health Aberdeen Paints the Way Forward
Thanks to Kind Donation
A leading north-east charity has received a donation with a difference that will
enable it to transform its working environment.
Mental Health Aberdeen (MHA) has been gifted paint from Spencer Coatings
Limited which is being used to revamp its central office and create an uplifting
environment for workers and visitors.
The painting and coatings manufacturer first assisted the charity 14 years ago
by donating materials to MHA’s Aberdeen Supported Housing Project - and has now repeated the kind gesture.
Fiona Mooney, fundraising and marketing manager at MHA, said: “We approached Spencer Coatings Limited as they have
helped us in the past and we are absolutely delighted that they have assisted us again. Their kind donation of a large amount
of paint means we can begin to brighten up our office space. We have had corporate volunteers from ADIL, Canadian Natural
Resources, Anderson Anderson Brown and KCA Deutag to do the painting work and they worked tirelessly to transform our
four offices and hallway within our central office building. The volunteers have also helped with the arduous task of moving
our office furniture.
“The office is looking so much brighter already and we are so grateful to both Spencer Coatings Limited and our volunteers
for giving up their time to help us. It makes such a difference for our visitors to be able to come to a warm, bright, welcoming
place and we want to thank everyone involved who is helping us transform the space.”
Linda Stronach of Spencer Coating Limited, said: “We were happy to get involved and assist such a worthy local charity by
donating our products to help enhance the charity’s premises. MHA works hard to deliver their vital services in Aberdeen
and throughout the north-east and we are pleased we were able to help in this way.”
MHA was founded in 1950 and provides support services, counselling and advice to people affected by challenges related to
mental health and wellbeing. Services are available for children from the age of 12 and adults. The organisation was among
the first to provide community care – with its first residential project, a group home for discharged psychiatric patients,
opened more than 35 years ago. MHA has also been providing day services continuously for over 60 years.
OSCR Consults on Charity Test Guidance
OSCR, Scotland’s charity regulator has announced a full revision of its key guidance for charities and applicants, and has
called on the sector and the public to give feedback on its draft publication.
Meeting the Charity Test has been updated in light of the Scottish Charity Regulator’s experience over the past nine years,
granting charity status to nearly 10,000 applicants and handling nearly 2,000 complaints and status reviews of charities.
Read the draft guidance here; http://www.oscr.org.uk/charities/guidance/draft-charity-test-guidance
Respond to the consultation here; http://www.oscr.org.uk/about/our-work/consultations/draft-charity-test-guidanceconsultation
Key features of the updated guidance include a less formal tone, case study examples and web-based sections that allow
users to navigate easily between areas of particular interest to their own organisations.
ACVO Development Officer Sandy Mathers writes; “This is a major development of the guidance on the charity test with
much extended examples and case studies.”
The consultation runs until 26th May.

Examining the Party Manifestos from a Charity Perspective
Orginal Article by Voluntary News
The major party manifestos have now been published, and we have added links to sector analysis and commentary, including
from Charity Finance Group, Charity Aid Foundation, NCVO, ACEVO (charity chief executives). An attempt at bringing key
items together, no attempt at being definitive (or balanced!):
• Labour’s policies of particular interest: repeal of the Lobbying Act and commitment to early intervention
both welcomed, Living Wage for public service providers could mean higher wage bills, concern that NHS
preferred provider policy might limit charities. various measures to strengthen not-for-profit services for
children and young people, restrictions for private schools on rate relief.
• Green: repealing the Lobbying Act, increasing international aid, support for social enterprises in particular
co-ops, working as a strong enabling force for the voluntary sector in government.
• Conservatives: “resurrection for the Big Society”, 3 days volunteering leave for those in large companies
and the public sector, commitments on international aid and growing National Citizen Service, more social
impact bonds and payment-by-results.
• Liberal Democrats: open public procurement for charities, review the Lobbying Act, new and improved
Work Programme, new community banking sector.
Also added to Election 2015 are various policy manifestos put forward by voluntary sector bodies. These include:
• Charity Finance Group has outlined five policy priorities, including a focus on gift aid and irrecoverable VAT
and changes in the rules around pensions.
• ‘One hundred days for early action – time for government to put prevention first’ has been published by
Community Links and Early Action Task Force. NPC’s Chief Exec argues for a revolutionary new approach both
in Whitehall and among service providers as the only way to ensure early action makes progress reducing
social problems.
• An article from Cherry Orchard Garden Service puts the case for a new Access to Volunteering fund, as
put forward in NCVO’s manifesto, to help with the additional costs in creating opportunities for disabled
volunteers.
• Social Enterprise Scotland and the Health and Social Care Alliance manifestos call on Scottish politicians to
commit to greater public participation in politics and democracy.

Aberdeen Football Club - New Charity Request
Procedure
Aberdeen FC Community Trust exists to provide support and opportunity
to others. At present AFCCT provide this support directly to over 9,000
people every year by delivering community focused programmes and
initiatives targeted at the following 5 strands: Positive Activity; Health &
Wellbeing; Equality & Inclusion; Good Citizenship and Learning.
Aberdeen Football Club work in partnership with AFCCT to deliver these charitable activities which are focused primarily
within the North East of Scotland and are delivered to those individuals and organisations identified as being ‘in need’ of
such help
AFCCT co-ordinates all requests on behalf of Aberdeen Football Club but due to the extremely high volume of requests we
receive, on a daily basis, we now have a new procedure which has a criteria to which all requests are to be adhered to. Our
priority is to support local registered charities and community groups, we regularly support National/International campaigns
which is looked upon on an individual basis. AFCCT will hold a monthly draw for applications who fit the criteria, donations
will include signed items of memorabilia which are exclusive to AFCCT
We are inviting local charities and groups to submit their application forms for the inaugural monthly draw at the end of
April. Full details can be found by clicking on this link http://www.afccommunitytrust.org/fundraising/charity_requests.php

Consultation on Aberdeen City Council Gaelic Language Plan
The Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 was passed by the Scottish Parliament with a view
to securing the status of the Gaelic language as an official language of Scotland commanding
equal respect to the English language. One of the key features of the 2005 Act is the provision
enabling Bòrd na Gàidhlig to require public bodies to prepare Gaelic Language Plans. This
provision was designed to ensure that the public sector in Scotland plays its part in creating a
sustainable future for Gaelic by raising its status and profile and creating practical opportunities for its use.
ACC’s intention is to present the Plan for consideration to the Finance, Policy and Resources Committee at its
meeting of 9th June with the Plan then being submitted to Bòrd na Gàidhlig on 12th June.
Any feedback you may have would be gratefully received. Responses should be sent to Sandra Bruce, sandrab@

match for a Leadership Exchange. Delegates will be given a chance to speed network and meet
others interested in the Leadership Exchange Programme.

What is the Leadership Exchange Programme?
The Leadership Exchange Programme pairs up leaders across sectors with the aim of improving
leadership capacity between peers. An exchange takes the form of flexible meetings where
you and your partner take turns to work alongside each other in your organisations, allowing for
individuals to gain an insight into the different cultures, constraints and opportunities that are
experienced in different organisations. The Leadership Exchange also allows participants to
network and build stronger relationships between organisations. The length and format of your
meetings are co-ordinated by you to suit.
Click here to watch our videos featuring previous Leadership Exchange participants describing
their experiences.
The Leadership Exchange Programme is a workstream of Workforce Scotland led by ACOSVO.
This event is held in partnership with ACVO and the North East Learning Collaborative.
If you have any further questions about Leadership Exchanges please contact Leadership
Exchange Development Officer, Emily Martin on [email protected] or 0131 243 2755

Audio Description Services at His Majesty’s Theatre
Audio description is a commentary for people with sight problems who have difficulty seeing a
stage. In theatre, it helps them to follow what is going on by describing the essential action, body
language, facial expressions, costume and scenery.
Since 2000, volunteers at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen have been providing a service to people
with sight problems. The Audio Describer’s Association (Aberdeen) which provides the service is a
small group of dedicated Theatre lovers who have undergone training.
Audio described performances usually take place on Saturday Matinee performances. A headset is required for this service
and will be provided by the Theatre front of house team before the show begins.
Touch Tours enable people with sight problems to experience the stage, feel the set, touch the props and the costumes
which helps to build a picture of the show when listening to the Audio Description. A Touch Tour will take place prior to
most Audio Described performances.
Upcoming shows that will be Audio described are
The Mousetrap on 2 May 2015
Calamity Jane 6 June 2015
Dirty Dancing 26 September 2015
Wicked on 23 May 2015
Anything Goes 25 July 2015

Governance Support for Scottish Third Sector Organisations
16.00 - 20.00pm, various dates, alternating between Glasgow & Edinburgh
ACOSVO member: £35, non-member £40
Working in partnership with IoD and supported by the Scottish Government, ACOSVO is delivering a series of workshops to
develop governance capacity for Boards in Scotland.
Using real experiences and issues facing Trustees, and including inputs from previous workshop participants, these twilight
sessions intend to identify best practice in approaching the dilemmas of these relationships and encourage greater awareness
and debate of governance and its significance for the voluntary sector in Scotland.
Please see below information and booking links for the workshops:
Governance as Leadership
14 May 2015, Glasgow
This workshop is designed to explore the topics of leadership culture and distributed leadership in the context of third sector
governance. The workshop will create greater understanding of the ideals of leadership and governance and provide a space
for Trustees to examine the culture of their Boards and the organisation.
Governance Relationship: The hair, Board and the Organisation
23 June 2015, Edinburgh
This workshop will explore the relationships between the Chair, their Board and the organisation based on the facilitator
and participants’ own experiences as well as recent research. The workshop will create greater understanding of these
organisational relationships, identify how the individuals involved can establish good working practices and highlight how
organisations support these key individuals for optimum benefit.
Governance in Complex Structures: Partnerships and Collaborations
3 September 2015, Edinburgh
Collaborative work must be based on the potential for distinct benefits that outweigh the challenges and costs. Trustees
share the responsibility for ensuring the collaboration is in the best interests of the charity. This workshop will create greater
understanding of what questions need to be asked and will provide tools for Trustees to help pose these often difficult
questions.
Governance Impact: Exploring Tools and Approaches
27 October 2015, Glasgow
This workshop will examine the opportunities and pitfalls of examining the impact of governance in an organisation, from the
viewpoint of a Board and/or the staff to whom the topic has been delegated. The realities of assessing governance, attitudes
to Board review, audit or appraisal will be discussed. This workshop will help Board members and staff navigate potential
issues and learn about current practice in the sector.
Twilight Governance Sessions between 16:00 - 20:00 £35 ACOSVO member / £40 non-member

DOES YOUR ORGANISATION NEED BUSINESS SKILLED
VOLUNTEERS?
Do you have business skills and time available to assist in your local
community?
Do you run an organisation which has skills gaps within its personnel?
Volunteering is fun, beneficial, valued and makes a real difference to society. Volunteers
are not paid for their time and energy which makes them priceless to an organisation.
Volunteering is a choice made by an individual to be involved in an activity which
benefits either the environment, local community or someone.
Many of us have had or are having careers through which we have gained much experience and expertise.
Volunteering is a means where your business skills can be put to good use for the benefit of organisations
operating across a wide spectrum of communities throughout our great city of Aberdeen. Not only does
volunteering make a big difference in the lives of others, it can also provide you with the experience needed
to further your career or keep your skills up to date. Volunteers have the opportunity to learn new skills, meet
new people, have fun, gain a sense of belonging in the local community and help a favourite charity achieve far
more than would otherwise be possible.
Volunteers make a huge difference. In Aberdeen it is estimated around 52,000
people volunteer, contributing around 4.4 million hours every year. The economic
impact of volunteering to Aberdeen is thought to be a staggering £67.3 million
annually.
With so many opportunities there has never been a better time to get involved
in volunteering. ACVO exists to involve, represent, support and develop not-forprofit organisations by finding business skilled volunteers to fill gaps in a charity’s
personnel base. The hours of volunteering are flexible to fit in with a volunteer’s
availability.
ACVO’S BUSINESS SKILLED VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME
The Business Skilled Volunteers Programme operates within the Aberdeen city boundary and aims to match
business skilled volunteers and professionals to organisations requiring specific skills, allowing the organisation
to expand its range of activities. Many organisations desperately need additional resources but lack the time
or finances needed to recruit suitably skilled workers. Organisations are in constant need of volunteers with
skills in areas such as Accountancy, Business Planning, Human Resources and staffing issues, Information
Technology, Training, Marketing, Project Management, Strategic Management and Training.
ACVO assists business-skilled volunteers find challenging and rewarding opportunities, often in roles where
they can provide leadership, advice and professional support. Skilled volunteers can have a major impact on
the future success of the organisation, perhaps becoming a trustee on the board of management to guide it
through difficult decisions.
Contact Ian Gourlay ([email protected]), the Skilled Volunteer Advisor at AVCO who produces a list of
organisation’s skills gaps which is sent to potential volunteers at the beginning of each month. He’s waiting to
hear from you!

Fulfilling a dream can help a child or young person to think beyond their illness or disability and focus on something

Over the years, we’ve arranged for thousands of children and young people to meet their heroes, enjoy amazing
experiences, visit special places and more. For some, a dream is simply to enjoy everyday activities so we’re also
happy to provide specialist items such as disability trikes, wheelchair swings, sensory equipment and technology.
