“A memorable and momentous event” for
the first ever all male graduating MD class of
the American International School of
Medicine. The event, marked their 8th
commencement ceremony, held on
Thursday May 26, 2011 at the Georgia
pacific auditorium, Atlanta, Georgia. This
event was celebrated with inspiring
speeches, honors bestowed and solos
performed and dedicated to the graduating
class.
A soul searching Commencement Address
was given by speaker Dr. Charles S. Finch
III, who charged the graduates to remain
true to their profession, their patients and
to themselves. He also highlighted that
Students of Medicine must know their
history and believes that medical schools
should include “The History of Medicine” in
their Curriculum. He believes that, to
appreciate your accomplishments, you must
understand your history and where you are
heading. Dr. Finch is a graduate of Thomas
Jefferson Medical College, a 1971 graduate
of Yale University and a former professor at
Morehouse School of Medicine.
Dr. Colin Wilkinson, President of AISM,
charged the Class to take responsibility for
their individual actions. He stated that,
“Each is responsible for their own history,

so be mindful of your words and actions. Think about
what you do today and consider if that is what you
would be happy and proud of in the future”. He
reminded the Graduates that this commencement
ceremony is just the completion of one aspect of their
Journey in Medicine. “Medicine”, he said, “is lifelong
learning, so be prepared and stay on top of it.”
The Commencement Exercise was chaired by AISM’s
Vice President of Business Affairs, Dr. Curtis Briscoe.
Rev. Dr. Carrol Braddy gave the invocation and two
Solos renditions were done by The Reverend T. Renee
Crutcher.
The 2011 graduates included: Dr. Ahmed Ghanium,
Dr. Bosah Ezenwa, Dr. Foad Faridian, Dr. José
Humphreys, Dr. Leonardo Vergara, Dr. Michael Ellis, Dr.
Otoobong Udoka, Dr. Pavel Madray, Dr. Segun Ajayi, Dr.
Sukhdave Seehra and Dr. Viktor Rakhamimov.
Honorary class member was Dr. Roxanne A. George and
the Mace Bearer was Dr. Rose M. Johnson-Matsumoto.

elcome to the first edition of AISM Times; a newsletter produced by the American
International School of Medicine (AISM) Alumni Association. AISM Times brings to you trusted
and up-to-date information regarding activities and news about AISM and the AISM Community and also
updates and articles on medical education and training maters. This edition was compiled by Drs. José
Humphreys, Stefan Salim, Rose Matsumoto-Johnson, Michael Ellis and Miriam Gadraj. We welcome your
feedback, comments, suggestions and contributions to our newsletter. This Newsletter is among the
projects and activities that the AISM Alumni Association has undertaken within the Structure of AISM.
We would like to commend Dr. Colin Wilkinson, President and the Administration for their vision,
leadership and commitment to their mandate of providing quality and affordable medical education and
training to students from around the world, We especially want to congratulate the 2011 MD Class of

I am extremely humble to be a recipient of American International School of Medicine
Dean's award. It has been a gratifying and rewarding experience working with my
classmates, Attendings and the AISM faculty. I have always tried to make the most
out of every experience. During my clinical rotations, I was able to expand my
medical knowledge, interact with patients and work with my peers and professors. In this process of becoming a physician, it is not only about diagnosing and

resident Dr. Wilkinson, trustees, distinguished faculty, family, friends and fellow
graduates. My name is Dr. Stefan Salim; I’m honored to speak to you on this very
special day. First, I would like to thank the Administration and Faculty of the
American International School of Medicine for their hard work and dedication in making the
dreams of the Class of 2011 possible. To all our fellow graduates I say, “Congratulations!”

Today is a celebration of your great accomplishments; a celebration of your commitment,
dedication and perseverance. Today, we celebrate the birth of new Doctors of Medicine. I
like to use a quote by Carl Gustav Jung; a great influential thinker and the founder of
Analytical Psychology. He said, “Your vision will become clear only when you can look into
your heart”. Up to this point, your life and medical journey was structured for you, but from
now on, it will be up to you to choose. It is up to you, to choose your path. I say, look
inside your heart and make a vision to design your future; a future where you can grow as a
professional in medicine.
Some of you will be great physicians and some of you will choose to pursue a career in
medical research, education or even become authors. Regardless of your choice, you will all
have one thing in common; you will all be making a difference in peoples’ lives. For me
personally, making a difference was the driving force to pursuing a path in Medicine. On that
note, I would like to talk about how we, the Alumni, can make a difference. What can the
Alumni do, to make a difference?

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
“STAYING OUR COURSE”
We have overridden the waves of growing pains. We have stayed steady on the course and have kept our
mast and flag above our ship; our journey is sure. Regardless of the challenges of change, threats and
opportunities facing our institution and the world at large, the American International School of Medicine
must credit itself for staying on course consistent with its mission and vision. I must quote Aristotle “We
are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” AISM is stronger because it’s a
community committed to excellence, innovation and purpose. We continue to provide students with
education and training which incorporates holistic development and experiential learning; attributes they will
need to be successful in their profession as health care providers and educators in the global society. I am
proud of the strides AISM has made by utilizing digital media in our classroom and global programs that
introduce students to a world of healthcare possibilities.
As we continue our journey , I charge that each person needs to be aware of what is happening around
them and despite the circumstances, we must stay focused. AISM is still considered a young institution,
but we have a rich history of producing brilliant physicians and we are very proud. We must continue this
trend.
I believe that AISM is at a turning point in its 11th year history. I see an institution with a growing strong
national and international reputation.” I envisioned an environmentally responsible institution that
recognizes its obligation.
I have full confidence, that with the support and vision of the team that
surrounds AISM, we will continue to make a mark for excellence and innovation for years to come.
I am very happy for the renewed interest of the Alumni Association which has proven to be a tower of
strength to me and to AISM as a whole. Their support, co-operation and commitment to the institution
must be commended. Special thanks to Drs. Stefan Salim, Pearline Grant and Dr. Rose M. JohnsonMatsumoto who are the stalwarts that kept the torch of the Alumni alight. Their continued stewardship
and support have been an inspiration to others like Drs. José Humphreys, Michael Ellis, Foad Faridian,
Bradley Matsumoto and Viktor Rakhamimov. I trust the Alumni Association will continue to grow from
strength to strength and I look forward to working with them for the continued growth and development of
AISM. I would also take this opportunity to commend Dr. Salim on his address to the Graduates at the
2011 Commencement Exercise. It was very inspiring and timely.
To all the Members of the AISM Community, I do look forward to strengthening this relationship. I am
reminded of Dr. Salim’s address and I quote “The American International School of Medicine is a very, very
special place. Individually, and collectively, we the Alumni, are the measure of its success and the foundation
of its future”. This statement is powerful and I am very happy that it is from the voice of the leadership of

Born and raised in Grenada, W.I., I migrated to the U.S. as a teenager. My
motivation for medicine arose as a where I helplessly watched my mother suffer
with complications of hypertension until her eventual death. This was attributed
largely to a system of inadequate healthcare and education. I vowed to make a
difference: to become involved in teaching and helping others to protect their
health. This dream, though, was temporarily pushed aside while I went on to
pursue other career opportunities.
I obtained two degrees (Business Administration and Biology) and after four years
of volunteer experience in the ER at Beth Israel Hospital in NYC, I decided to
pursue my dream of becoming a Medical Doctor. Today, I am a Family Physician
and while the journey was tough with many sacrifices, I feel very proud that I have
realized my dream. I truly understand and I quote “hard work and sacrifice
eventually pay off”.
Dr. Grant was among the first batch of students who attended AISM in
Georgetown, Guyana in January, 2000. She was a member of the MD Class of
2004. She completed her Residency in Family Medicine at Meharry Medical College
(Nashville General Hospital) in 2009. From 2009-2010, she was a member of the
Duke University Affiliated Physicians Inc, Henderson, NC, where she practiced as a
Family Physician. Currently she is a Staff Physician at Cape Fear Valley, Bladen
County Hospital, Elizabethtown, NC. Dr. Grant is an Executive Member of the
American International School of Medicine’s (AISMs) Alumni Association.
Niraj Patel, M4
Growing up as a second generation immigrant of South Asian descent, I was made
aware of the importance of education from a very young age. My parents had
emphasized that Education was not a punishment, but merely a route to better
options. I did not quite appreciate this notion until my second year of high school,
when I had to choose electives based on my future career options. Analyzing what my
parents had emphasized many years earlier, I understood that education at any level
would be a great tool to take advantage of, for success later in life. I accepted this
advice, and choose to explore the educational scope that intrigued me the most;
Medicine. My Goal is to be a Physician who provides medical treatment to all those
who need it, regardless of status; so as to ensure a better quality of life for all.
Niraj is a fourth year Medical Student and a candidate for the MD Class of
2012. Before attending AISM in Georgetown Guyana. He studied at the
University of Houston where he earned a Bachelor of Science, Biology. He
is currently completing his clinical clerkship in Atlanta, Georgia.

The American International School of Medicine (AISM) is a privately owned institution of higher
learning located in Guyana, the only English speaking country in South America and a country with a very
rich history and a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
In 1999, The International Medical Educators Associates, Inc. (IMEA), a Georgia company in the United
States of America, headed by Dr. Colin A. Wilkinson brought to birth in Guyana an International Medical
School; The American International School of Medicine (AISM). The establishment of AISM in Guyana was
approved by the Government of Guyana in October of 1999.
The first batch of Students was admitted in the Winter Semester in January 2000. AISM has graduated over
200 medical doctors who are in clinical training, research, and/or practicing medicine in the USA, Guyana,
UK, Trinidad & Tobago, and other Caribbean and commonwealth countries worldwide.
We focus on training physicians who can excel in patient-care, research and education as a part of their
professional development process. AISM has its main campus, 89 Sandy Babb and Middleton Streets, Kitty,
Georgetown, Guyana, South America; and clinical training sites in the Guyana and the Caribbean, Canada,
United States and England.

Our students participate in clinical rotations at hospitals in Guyana, UK, and the United States among
other countries. Together, these facilities are geared towards providing our students with the opportunity
to learn and become involved with the most comprehensive healthcare facilities available in the world.
AISM sets and maintains the highest standards that are comparable to those of accredited institutions in
the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Europe and the Caribbean. Instructions are in English;
delivered by reputable, experienced international medical educators.
The school is listed with the W.H.O. (World Health Organization), and our graduates are eligible for
certification in Guyana, Caribbean, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Tanzania, India and
Pakistan. Registration and Licensing in some countries or region may require passing the Licensing board
examinations specific to that particular country or region (e.g., PLAB – UK, CAMC–Caribbean,
USMLE – US).
