In 1998 Shelley developed a technique for constructing Cathedral Window quilts based on three-dimensional piecing techniques similar to the three-dimensional bow tie block. Shelley’s first book is, “Machine Stitched Cathedral Windows”. Martingale & Company, That Patchwork Place, released the book in December of 1999. It was followed in late 2001 by her second book, “Machine Stitched Cathedral Stars. In 2000 she appeared in an episode of Simply Quilts. She formed a relationship with RJR Fashion Fabrics and has designed many projects for them. Some of her quilts have appeared in McCall’s Quilting, The Quilter, Quilter’s World and Quiltmaker magazines. Shelley has created a wonderful line of patterns, which use elements of the techniques she used in the Cathedral Windows designs. These quilts have the flavour of Cathedral Windows, the rolled bias edges and three-dimensional qualities, and are an easy transition to the quilts in her books. Shelley was the featured artist at SLO Quilters 2003 Quilt Celebration. Please let me know what position you will play. It is with joy, anticipation & great hope that I enter this new era of life. What an honor of being your president! Just to let you know, I view this position more as a cheerleader & a coach. The guild is a team sport. I just know it’s going to be a fabulous year! What surprises we will enjoy! What new ideas will inspire our minds! What great friendships will develop! I’m so glad you are part of the team! We promote quilting & sewing --learning, growing, sharing, & reaching out together in so many ways. We join together for meetings to learn from visiting teachers & to be together. We come together in classes to further our skills. We meet in friendship groups to enjoy our art & help each other with projects. We make quilts for those in need & send our love out into the world. We inspire the community as we drape Old Town with the work of our hands. And we do countless other things that make a difference. And along the way, we make incredible friendships. Blessings, Sew On, To You from Marlene Quilting is both an ancient & a very modern thing to do. For unknown millennium, people have put together fabric in layers for warmth, for beauty, for rites of passage; to wrap the dead & the newborn, to cover the newlyweds, to send to the front. There are days when we feel connected to the continuous stream of people who have sat with needle, thread & fabric to create something both useful & beautiful. It is amazing to be part of this historic stream of energy. This thing we call The Valley of the Mist Quilters’ Guild is you. Ask yourself what role you will take this year in your guild. What part of the historic stream calls you into action? This team sport Marlene Oaks Here’s A Thought Please look at the wanted list! Imagine our guild without these things. If not you, who? If not now, when? Page 5 Some History From Our VP—A Preview of Our Year’s Programs We have a very exciting year for speakers and workshops coming up, so mark your calendars and plan to join in for learning and fun! In addition to shortages of gas and food during World War II, steel shortages meant sewing machine production was halted. Since they couldn’t sell sewing machines, the 1943 Sears catalog offered only replacement parts and preventative maintenance tips. (Source: Joan Kiplinger) Chinese New Year, Jan 23rd The Year of the Dragon Chinese New Year is a time to welcome longevity, wealth and prosperity and to eliminate any negative chi from the past. This fourteen day celebration is very symbolic. People born under the Dragon are passionate, brave and self-assured. At their best they are pioneering spirits; at their worst, they epitomize the old adage: Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. Dragons are generous with their resources, a tendency that at its most negative can reflect a foolhardy attitude towards money. But Dragons in general are blessed with good fortune. They are smart, enterprising and have a wicked sense of humor. They have a natural flair for fashion and are the people to consult if you want to catch up on the latest trends. The Dragon’s lucky color is yellow. After Christmas Retreat Sale! Yes for only $250.00 you get a weekend getaway! Quilt to your hearts content, food, fun, prizes and more fun! We will have a apron fashion show, a few games, a swap your stash meet, and lots more! Sign up today! The retreat is April 20, 21, and 22nd. Page 6 Starting in January we have Shelly Swanland, who will show us her marvelous Cathedral Window quilts and then teach us how to make them! In February, Sylvia Q. Davis will give us hints and laughter for Stash Reduction (making more room for future fabric purchases natch!) and teach us her fun & easy Triad Quilt. By March, get ready to learn how to make your very own Art Quilt with Grace Errea and with her techniques and patterns and her 2 day workshop, take home a beautiful finished piece of art! In April, learn how a quilter goes From Cotton To Wool, when Kris Kouzelos brings her great trunk show and offers a wool applique workshop complete with original pattern…peaceful and easy, no sewing machines needed. In May we switch gears from art & applique to Keeping it Sew Simple with Robin Gallagher, who will share her many wonderful hints for making your quilts easier and fun. Plan to take home your bag of any size (small enough for a purse, or make it larger for the next fabric sale!) with her Lettie’s Bag workshop, and possibly a new bag pattern from Robin. June brings our famous & fabulous “Brown Bag” Event, and July is when we all get smarter at Quilt University. August will find us at our favorite activity: sewing for Philanthropy at our Sewing Bee, and in September, we celebrate our guild’s birthday with another wonderful Challenge/ Mystery quilt adventure! Finally, in October, welcome the extraordinary Sharon Schamber, who will bring some of her fabulous quilts to share and tell us of her quilting journey. Sign up for one or both of her 2 workshops…in one learn her technique for Piec-lique, and in the other learn all about machine quilting with Feathers, Corners, Borders & Blocks. At our last regular meeting of the year in November, Laura Wasilowski comes to us from the ‘Chicago School of Fusing’…her lecture is titled So Many Chickens, So Little Time, Diary of a Serial Quilter, and you won’t want to miss it! She shows her bright whimsical quilts & tells her stories amid song and laughter. Learn how to fuse and create in 2 workshops: make a wall hanging for your sewing space with Tools of the Trade, or brighten up a corner with your own Garden of Eden. In December, join us for our final get together of the year at the annual Holiday Dinner where all members are welcome to share fun & laughter around the table. Don’t miss out on these wonderful speakers/teachers & events! Be sure to send your membership renewals in asap and plan to bring a guest (or several) to meetings! Sign up for workshops to learn a new technique or just participate in an activity you love. New members, welcome and we hope you will enjoy our programs for the year and participate in this opportunity to learn from experts in our field. Workshops are a great bargain for members. (Non members may participate at higher fees if there is room.) Working on Programs for 2013….if there is a speaker you would love to see and learn from….please let me know! SECRET PALS: ENJOY THE FUN OF GIVING (AND RECEIVING)!!!! Ladies and Gentlemen, it's a New Year, so that means time for a new Secret Pal. You too can be a part of the fun each month! Be part of this year’s adventure, as we search for just the right inexpensive but perfect treasure, surreptitiously observe reactions, and anticipate what our own gift might be each month. To participate in Secret Pals, please fill out the detailed questionnaire and submit it no later than the February meeting. We have included the questionnaire in this newsletter and copies will be available at the next two meetings. Each participant will receive the form of another participant and she/he will secretly give her Pal a gift at each Guild meeting, beginning with March and continue until the big reveal at the December meeting and party. It is always fun to give and receive a gift, and the fun is even greater when you have no idea who your Secret Pal could be. Neither the participants nor the specific Pals are revealed until the December meeting, so you will have 10 whole months to speculate about who is providing your gifts! Ask around for opinions about being and having a Secret Pal.
