POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the GEAR UP Academic Coordinators, the Academic Tutor II will work with
students at one of the six high schools in the Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD) that
GEAR UP serves. The Academic Tutor II will be part of the federally funded GEAR UP grant
program designed to increase the number of students prepared to enter and succeed in
postsecondary education. The primary role of the Academic Tutor II is to collaborate with GEAR UP
Staff and AUHSD personnel to assist students with their academic preparation and services related
to the encouragement of students pursuing postsecondary education opportunities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Interact effectively with other professional staff to ensure successful integration of GEAR UP
services with those of the assigned school sites.
• Work collaboratively under supervision by on-site project staff.
• Conduct structured small group and one-to-one academic advising sessions.
• Assist GEAR UP participants with admission and financial aid applications.
• Promote GEAR UP services to students and school staff.
• Participate in school events that promote and support GEAR UP.
• Assist GEAR UP staff in preparation for GEAR UP activities and workshops.
• Provide student referrals to GEAR UP Academic Coordinators.
• Adhere to AUHSD policies and procedures in regards to contact with students and school
personnel.
• Prepare and maintain accurate records of daily contacts and activities with students.
• Track participants’ educational progress through detailed documentation of students
participation and academic progress.
• Attend staff meetings and program staff development sessions.
• Help supervise field trips.
• Participate in mandatory, paid trainings prior to working in the schools.
• Ability to work some evening and/or weekends.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Have prior or current experience with an Educational Partnerships project (like GEAR UP,
Talent Search, and/or Upward Bound).

• Experience working with students from diverse economic and social backgrounds.
• Experience working with target age group.
• Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Possess good organizational skills.
• Must be able to work independently and take initiative.
• Must successfully pass a background check prior to working with minors.
• Reliable, responsible, punctual and self-directed.
• Excellent ability to work as a member of a collaborative team.
• Must be available to work Monday-Thursday, between 8:00am-4:00pm.
• Must be available to work a minimum of 4 continuous hours, twice a week.
• Must attend mandatory trainings.
• Must be available to facilitate monthly mandatory tutor trainings.
• Must be available to attend training July 27-31, 2015

EDUCATION:
Applicant must be a current college student in good academic standing or recent college graduate.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Prolonged sitting in front of computer. Walking, talking, hearing, pulling, bending, may carry 10-15
pounds of objects/material, not exposed to extreme noise level, use hands to finger, handle, or
feel, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, taste or smell.
