ADDITIONAL PINEWOOD DERBY IDEAS
If you are looking for some ideas to add some life to your Pinewood Derby event, read on. We have
collected these ideas from packs all over the U.S.A. and offer them as such. Most of these our not our ideas,
but suggestions from others. In that spirit we share them here.

Consider hosting a car-building clinic. Ask an adult to open up his or her workshop/garage to assist boys with limited
resources. Offer assistance with design, cutting, and finishing the cars. Have extra parts available. Here are some design
templates to
•
To remind adults of the upcoming derby and to build excitement, consider using one of the Pinewood Derby activities in
this booklet during the meeting the month prior to the derby.
•
Use your derby to help teach Wolf Cubs about tools for their badge requirements or Webelos about inertia and gravity for
their Scientist pin. Have Webelos present a how-to session for the pack, giving tips on building and finishing a Derby
car. Use these to meet Communicator or Showman badge requirements.
•
Check with local race drivers to see if you can borrow official racing gear for the derby.
Also check with the Federal Highway Safety Administration or State Highway Patrol to see
if they have crash dummy costumes to borrow.
•
Invite a local celebrity or two (mayor, politician, policeman, minister, weatherman, race
car driver, etc.) to make a race car and race it against the scouts or in an adult race. They
could also serves as race officials or judges of best design competitions.
•
Feature an adults or open class race for parents, leaders, siblings, etc. to allow them to
race. Why should the boys have all the fun?
•
If space permits, hold a fundraising event like a carnival, cakewalk, or raffle before the
race. If you’re feeling creative, try making a racetrack cake to
raffle off. Other activities could include face painting or a photo
with the scout and a local celebrity. If you have an old Derby
track it works well for a Hot Cars race. The cars fit well between
the lanes of the track.
•
Set up a refreshment stand as a fundraiser. Buy quantities of refreshments or get them donated.
Too many leftovers can kill your profits! Have someone bake car-shaped sugar cookies to sell as a
special treat. Popcorn is always a big seller & smells great!
•
Add some extra pizzazz to your derby with racing decorations. Check eBay for racing banners

Have someone with a digital camera photograph each scout posing with his car with an
appropriate background (trophies, banners, flags, etc.). The Old Guys have a cool racecar

After the race, let the boys use their cars in a special event like a target race (roll the car towards a target to see who gets
the closest).
•
Make Car stands or display cases as den projects. See the display stands page of this booklet for ideas.

Add a special station to have the boys take an eye test or written exam prior to getting their
driver’s license. The Old Guys have an eye chart and written exam available on their
downloads page: http://bunchofoldguys.home.comcast.net/Downloads.htm. This especially
works well if you do your registration prior to Derby day (recommended).
•
Have a coloring table for little ones. Get racing themed coloring books or use the pictures in
this booklet. Have a prize for the winner of the coloring contest.
•
Consider seeing if a car dealer or auto parts store will help sponsor your Derby. You may
want to run your Derby in conjunction with an auto show.
•
Have other awards or certificates to present to who did not win their races. Check out the list
of ideas to get you started in our Race Package document on the downloads page:

If you have someone in the pack with a good voice (don’t forget siblings or parents as well),
have them lead the singing of the National Anthem at the start of the race.

My little red Ford Escort broke down on the 67 bypass and so I called for a tow truck. While I was waiting for the tow truck to get
there (it took about 45 minutes), I picked up my notebook and pen and wrote this song. To read the words without knowing the
melody would probably make no sense, but if I told you it was sung to the tune of the great 1960’s Motown hit, “I Will Follow
Him” written by Norman Gimbel, Arthur Altman, Jacques Plante, J. W. Stole and Del Roma (No wonder it was a great song, look
how many guys worked on it !), it would make perfect sense.

PINEWOOD DERBY – RACING FLAGS OPENING CEREMONY
Announcer: Our opening ceremony tonight is to show you the use of the colored flags in auto racing!
Colored flags similar to those used to show their color meaning in an actual race. Checkered flag is made
from white crepe paper sheet using black stripes. All other flags are made of plain crepe paper. Each Scout
carries a flag and waves it during his part of the opening.
Cub #1: (Carries Pack Flag) Gentlemen, your attention please! All cars in the race on the track, now!
Cub #2: (Carries Green Flag) Once around the track and then we will start. Watch that green flag.
Cub #3: (Carries Yellow Flag) All cars running well, looks like we're off to a good start. Whoops! A
spinout on the back of the track! Slow down and hold your places!
Cub #4: (Carries Red Flag) Watch out for the spinout - another car is hit - driver on the track. Stop the
race! We have a driver on the track!
Cub #5: (Carries Green Flag) The track is all clear - all cars back in racing position. Let's have another start.
Watch that flag!
Cub #6: (Carries Den Flag) There is another spinout on the track! That guy hit the wall. Doesn't he know
he can't win a race that way?
Cub #7: (Carries a White Flag) Here comes lucky number 2! He is still in first place! Looks like we have a
winner!
Cub #8: (Carries Checkered Flag) It's number 2! A checkered flag for the winner. Well folks, that's our
race - now let's get on to the real one!
PINEWOOD DERBY ADVANCEMENT CEREMONY
Equipment - Put decals of the badges of rank on poster board squares. Attach long sticks and tape the sticks
to the side of your derby track. Put Bobcat near the bottom, then Wolf, etc. Have the Cubs' actual awards in
envelopes on the floor by each sign.
Cubmaster: "We've all had a great time watching the Pinewood Derby cars race down this track tonight.
They really speed downhill, don't they? Well, you can go uphill on this same track, too. It's a little harder,
but it's worth the climb from Bobcat...to Wolf...to Bear...to Webelos and on to the Arrow of Light. Pack
_____ Cub Scouts have been climbing this course and now we're going to show just how far they've gotten."
"Will the following Cub Scouts who have made the climb as far as Wolf please come forward with their
parents?" (Read names) When boys and parents arrive, give the badge to the parents, who then gives it to
their son. Repeat for all the ranks and arrowheads.

THE BIG RACE (AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION)
Narrator reads the following like a radio announcer with a lot of enthusiasm! The audience is divided into groups. As
their assigned word is read in the story, they make the sound:
• WHITE = Whiz!
• RED = Zoom!
• YELLOW = Zip!
• BLUE = Ca-Chunk!
The cars are ready.
The flag us up.
The race is set to go.
The flag goes down,
The cars are off...
They're running toe to toe!

PINEWOOD DERBY - OPENING COMMENTS
Cubmaster: If you take a moment tonight to contemplate these cars, you will realize that an awful lot of
painstaking work went into each one. There is much creativity and ingenuity represented here. I don't know,
but I imagine that each car was designed to be the fastest. Of course, not all cars will win. As we begin our
pack meeting, keep in mind that in Cub Scouting, as in life, the victors are those who put forth earnest effort.
As a great marathon runner from Kenya, a country in Africa, once said "To win is to finish. To finish is to
win." Please join me in the Pledge of Allegiance.

TROUBLE WITH THE CAR
This is an audience participation story. As we read the story, each of you, in turn, will pick up a piece of
paper from the front of the room. Each piece of paper has a word written on it. At your turn, you will “enter”
the word in the blank space in this story.
Once upon a time, my Assistant Cub Leader and I decided to drive out of town with our den for a picnic. We
loaded a basket with _______, ______ and ______, and other tasty things. Then we drove off with our lunch
in an old car that belonged to our sponsor.
The cap on the radiator was decorated with ______ and the holes in the roof had been patched with ______
and ______. As we drove along, my Assistant Leader pointed to the side of the road. “Oh, look at that bush
with ______ and _____ growing on it. Let’s stop here.”
We carried the basket to some shade cast by ______ and spread out ______ to sit upon. Nearby, ______ sang
gaily in a tree and some low bushes had ______ and ______ growing upon them. Our den was having a
wonderful time. “There’s nothing as delicious as ______ with mustard and relish,” said our Cubs. “Yes,” I
sighed, “however, it is getting late. Maybe we’d best start for home now.”
But our car refused to go. The motor made a noise like ______ and then stopped. “Oh, dear,” said my
Assistant Leader, looking under the hood. “I think I see ______ and ______ caught in the gears.”
Impossible,” I said. “Are you sure the tank isn’t empty? Are you sure you put in enough ______ before we
left home? “Of course I did,” said my Assistant Leader. “It must be the wheels. We’ll jack them up with
______ and ______, then replace them with ______.” Our leader covered her dress with ______ and took
______ to loosen the bolts.
Just then a farmer drove up and asked if he could help us. “Looks like ______ in the engine,” he said,
tightening a bolt with ______. Then he stepped back and the car started. “I just connected ______ to
______, which had rattled loose.” We gave him the rest of our______ and ______ to show our appreciation
and drove happily home again.

DAD'S TOOLS SKIT
Characters: Narrator, Dad, Mom, Cub Scout
Narrator: As our plan begins, Dad is looking for his hammer...
Dad: Has anyone seen my hammer?
Mom: No dear, did you look in your toolbox?
Dad: It's not there. No one ever puts anything back where it belongs around here.
Cub Scout: Look, Dad. I found it. It's over here behind the door where you used it to fix the loose door
hinges.
Dad: Now, where is my saw?
Mom: It should be on your workbench.
Dad: Well, it's not there. No one ever puts my tools away.
Cub Scout: Dad, don't you remember? You left it out by the garage when you were sawing those boards to
build my clubhouse.
Dad: Good grief! Now where is my file?
Cub Scout: Oh, that's out in the yard where you used it to sharpen the lawn mower blade.
Dad: I can't find my screwdriver now, and I just had it! Did you use it, son?
Cub Scout: Yes, Dad. And here it is in the toolbox - right where I put it when I finished with it.
Dad: Oh! I never thought of looking for it there!

‘TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE PINEWOOD SKIT
My den, with the assistance of Assistant Den Leader Ken Allwine and I, wrote this poem in 1994. They performed a
skit at a pack meeting based on it, but it would also work as just a poem. They had a lot of fun with it, and it helped
them earn their Showman pin. I have received a few requests for it, so here it is for anyone that would like to use it. I
had to go back in the archives for this one. I could not find it on my system, and I could not find a copy in the mounds
of Cub Scout papers I had accumulated. So I pulled out the trusty old video tapes and transcribed it from there. We all
had a good laugh watching it again!
The Poem
'Twas the night before Pinewood,
his car still needed lead,
he had done his very best,
when his mom yelled "Get to bed!"
He climbed under his blanket,
his car wasn't ready to race,
the pinewood derby was tomorrow,
there was a frown on his face.
Just as his eyes closed,
he heard something spin,
it was Scout Saint Nick,
coming to help him win!
As he peeked from under the covers,
Scout Saint Nick started to drill,
to help his car speed,
on its way down the hill.
He splashed on some paint,
and stuck on some wheels,
he put the car on its stand,
and clicked his boot heels.
This woke the young scout,
he had a smile on his face,
a happy Pinewood to all,
and to all a good race!

The Skit
• I only had four Scouts in my den, so we had 'The Scout', 'Scout Saint Nick', and two narrators. The stage directions
below are more or less divided the same as the poem.
• The skit starts with TS* working on a very rough looking car at a small table. As the narration starts he picks the
car up, looks at it and shrugs his shoulders. As mom yells he sets it down on the table and goes under the covers to
stage right/left.
• When the 'frown on his face' line is read, he sits up in bed and gives a big comic frown to the audience. Big laughs
ensue.
• Narration pauses while SSN enters, jingling all the way. SSN** picks up the car and spins a wheel. TS sits up a
little and looks at SSN.
• SSN picks up the drill and drills. Here he turns his back on the audience and switches the plain and good looking
cars. TS lays down and falls asleep.
• SSN picks up the paint brush and brushes while he walks around the table and faces the audience, displaying the
'looker'. He sets it on the table, picks up his pack, and clicks his heels together.
•

A SIMPLE BLOCK OF WOOD SKIT
Characters: Each Scout holds a cardboard figure in front of him starting with a square block of wood. Boy 2
is roughed out pinewood derby racer. Boy 3 is a racer with a little paint. Boy 4 and 5 are the finished cars.
Setting: Each boy walks on to the stage to read his part. The last scout runs onto the stage shouting his line.
Boy 1:
I'm only a simple block of wood,
Cut from a tree so tall.
Unlike the tree that thundered down,
No noise would I make should I fall.
Boy 2:
But in the hands of a wide eyed boy,
Armed with a knife and a saw.
There are many shapes that I can take,
Some wide, some short, some tall.
Boy 3:
A little paint, a line or two,
Nothing fancy, but not too plain.

SCOUT GAMES
Wheels
Line patrols up. Give each team member a number. Then shout out modes of transport e.g. car. Number four
runs because it has four wheels. Any mode of transport is applicable:
1 - unicycle
2 - bicycle
3 - trike or a unicycle and a bicycle.
4 - car
5 - Unicycle on top of a car
6 - 3 bikes.
TRAIN - Whole team runs.
You can make it up as you go along: But when you shout TRAIN then the whole team must run.
Nail Driving Relay
• A Hammer per team
• A Wooden block per team
• Bag of nails
Stand one 2x4 block for each team on edge and start two or three 16 penny nails to the same height in the
edge. Place the blocks about fifteen feet from the starting line and put a hammer next to each of the blocks.
On "GO!" one boy from each team races to the block, picks up the hammer, and swings ONE blow to drive
the nail into the block. He then lays the hammer down and returns to his team, tagging the next boy in the
relay. The race continues, with each boy in turn going as many times as it takes for one team to drive all of
its nails flush into the block. Be ready to straighten bent nails.

CRAFTS
Neckerchief and Slide
Black and white checkered fabric cut to a length equal to the folded width (ie:
fabric which is 44”-45” wide will be 22” wide when folded, therefore cut 22” down
from top). Cut along fold to have two (2) equal pieces, each 22” square. Next fold
diagonally, and cut along this new fold. You now have four (4) triangles.
Fabric with race-car motif works well for a decorative corner
on the back of the neckerchief. Cut out each car motif and use a washable fabric glue
and sponge brush to glue on motif to back of neckerchief.
Note: for adults, fabric should be opened flat and each square should be at least 25”.
For the slide, use a small rectangular block of wood and pipe cleaner to match choice
of paint. Drill 2 small holes just large enough for the pipe cleaner to fit snugly. Paint
and then decorate with a race car sticker. Spray with clear acrylic to prevent paint
from getting onto neckerchief or other clothing. Insert small piece of pipe cleaner and
twist flat in back to form a small loop.
