Summer Newsletter 2015 - Boort District Health

Murray to Moyne Fundraiser
On Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th March 2015, the Boort
Cycling Team, led by local doctor Ashraf Takla will take on the
challenge of riding 520km in 24 hours as part of the Murray to
Moyne Cycle Relay, for the seventh year running.
The Murray to Moyne was founded in 1987 by Hester and
Graham “Woody” Woodrup. The event has grown from 3
teams raising $10,000 in 1987, to more than 1200
riders representing 150 organisations raising around
$1.3 million for hospitals & health services.
All proceeds from the Boort Team’s efforts are donated
to Boort District Health to be used to purchase
advanced emergency equipment which will benefit the
local Boort and surrounding communities who visit the
hospital for treatment.
Over the past 6 years, the Boort Team has raised over
$130,000 for Boort District Health. This year we are
aiming to raise another $20,000.00 to assist with the
establishment of the Urgent Care Centre room in the
redevelopment of the new Boort District Health Facility.

Ride-in Day
Please come along to Nolen’s Park, Boort, on Saturday the 28th
of March to meet the riders and crew as they changeover and be
part of the family fun. Time of arrival is between 1—2.30pm. It’s
just like our own little Tour de France, when people line the road,
clap and cheer the riders. There will be a sausage sizzle, major
raffle draw, merry-go-round, and other family activities.
Of course the other great bonus of making a financial
contribution, either personal or business, is that ........all
donations are tax deductible!

The Redevelopment and
what it means to me
It is an honour to be the Chair of the board at a time when such a major redevelopment of the health service is taking place. Only through
tireless effort and work by many people before me has this come to fruition.
Receiving the whole allocation for the redevelopment by the state government of Victoria is a great boost to Boort. Not only is it a huge
investment into its future, it also shows great believe in the community.
The state government provides us with a new facilities that is taking into account today’s and future requirements for a complete health care.
It is up to us to manage and run it in the best possible way. I believe it is a great opportunity and obligation to all stake holders to make this a
top class facility.
Health care has changed dramatically over the lifetime of the current buildings and it will change just as much over the lifetime of the new
buildings. It is a challenge to plan and for see some of these changes and to make allowances for it.
All studies indicate clearly that as we age we don’t opt to move into aged care until we have no other option. The majority of people want to
remain living in their own home. The demand for the future is an increase in high care and in home care. Home care will have to adjust to a
wider array of services.
The redevelopment is taking all this into account. Even though there will be less
beds overall, there is a significant increase in beds available for high care.
However it is expectations by residents that shape the redevelopment just as
much as studies do. All rooms will have en suite bath rooms, more living spaces
like dining living and activity room plus two outdoor areas. Relocation and
redevelopment of urgent care and kitchen will provide better work flow and so on.
All up it is a very exciting time. A great opportunity for all of Boort and its
surrounds to create a health service we will be envied for. My vision is Boort District
Health to be the healthy service of choice for both residents and staff.
Marlies Eicher,
Chair of the Board
WELCOME
Welcome to 2015.
It has been an exciting start to the year as we have spent considerable time finalising Tender plans with an
expected building commencement date just after Easter 2015.
Over the coming months we will be putting up displays in the main street showing more detailed plans of the
building design including proposed new gardens and courtyards for our residents and patients to enjoy. The
Boort District Health Community Advisory Committee will be seeking further community input into specific
design features and ways to commemorate the past. There will be more details about specific projects in
future correspondence.
2015 Support Crew: Kelvin Ritchie, Paul Ballis, Neville Miller,
Lynette Clark, Luke Stomann, Karen Allison, Darren Allison, Gary
Armfield, Spencer Horne, Joe Cauchi, Carol Ritchie, Kassandra
Ritchie.
We also congratulate the dedication that Lawrence Cameron,
Damian Forster and Dr Takla have displayed in being
consistent riders over the past six years. Additionally, we want to
acknowledge the commitment of Kelvin Ritchie who has been a
key member of the support crew over the same period.

Thank you to everyone who has provided us with ideas. We have tried very hard to incorporate all suggestions into the
redevelopment. It will be very exciting to see the results of our combined efforts where we realise a magnificent health service that the
community can feel very proud of.

We are also working with Ladies Auxiliary to create an internal space that will allow people to make a cuppa or for
residents or patients to have a meal with family and friends away from the residential and acute areas. We are looking
forward to working with Ladies Auxiliary over coming months to see their ideas materialise. And added to this we have

many ideas

Therefore, over coming months we will be seeking input from people who would like to work alongside us and ensure we
have captured the history of Boort District Health and found a place for memorabilia in the facility.
