A Word from Our Principal
We are now in a position to announce the financial outcome
for the 3 major events that make up our Easter Fair. We look
like making an overall profit close to $24,000, which is a
fantastic result and indicative of the great support that we
have received in running our Easter Fair. The Fair will
significantly subsidise the installation of its target project:
Shade sails over the senior playground.
Once again it is with the sincerest of thanks and gratitude that
I acknowledge our very hard working Easter Fair committee,
particularly our resilient and selfless coordinator Sarah
Jackson.
I would also once again like to acknowledge our individual
major event coordinators:
Kylie Valentine: Art Show
Aaron and Danni Smith, Karen Finn: Sheepwash Classic
They are enormous roles in their own right which they do
without complaint and without drama.
I would also like to thank the teaching staff and in some cases
even their partners, who sacrificed holiday time to support
our Fair. A truly supportive and selfless contribution to our
school in terms of work and time for which I am truly
grateful. I would also like to acknowledge and thank our local
community for their generous financial support of our fair,
particularly our major sponsors for their ongoing support of
our school. We cannot thank local businesses and
organisations enough for all that they provide.
Barwon Heads Primary School promotes integrity, life-long learning and the attainment of excellence.
Major Sponsors:
RT Edgar: Art Show
Barwon Coast: Sheepwash Classic (Course and donation)
Bellarine Property: Sheepwash Classic (Signage and medallions)
Bendigo Bank: Easter Fair (Staffing and donation)
Tonik: Easter Fair (Product supply)
ANZAC Day Ceremony - TEMPORARY CHANGE TO OUR WEEKLY ASSEMBLY
FORMAT
BHPS will be involved in a number of ANZAC day events working up to the official day on the 25 th April.
Grade 6 students will be marching in representation of our school at Barwon Heads ceremony on the
Saturday where we will be laying a wreath at the Barwon Heads RSL and our captains will be reciting poetry
for the official service. Wallington Primary School will also be participating this year in a larger event than
usual due to this being the centenary year of the ANZAC Day campaign.
This week’s assembly will be replaced by a school run ANZAC Day ceremony which will be predominantly
run by our grade 5 students. We have organised a guest speaker and a buglist who will play The Last Post, and
The Reveille as part of the ceremony.
Parents, family and friends are definitely invited to attend but can I please ask parents that you keep younger
siblings with you as a show of respect, during the ceremony. Ideally it would be appreciated if those wishing to
attend arrive prior to the commencement at 3.00pm particularly as there will also be a period of respectful
silence as per an ANZAC Day ceremony.
The grade 5s have produced the most amazing pieces of ANZAC themed poetry. This was a one night
homework task, which makes the quality even more remarkable. You’ll find them included in this newsletter.
PREP Enrolments 2016
We are now taking enrolments for 2016. If you have a child who you wish to attend BHPS in 2016, please
collect and return the necessary enrolment forms. These are available at the school office. If you know of any
other community member who may wish to enrol their child please feel free to inform them also. We have
already had many enquiries from the nearby areas and are very conscious of the fact that our room availability
and staffing will be significantly impacted by late enrolments.
Community Service
This week 9 of our grade 6 students volunteered to work with 8 local senior citizens in our library as they
developed their knowledge on iPad usage.
It was a truly rewarding and inspiring session to witness as our students actively engaged in conversation with
the more experienced members of our local community. The ladies were extremely appreciative and were not
only delightfully impressed by the knowledge our students, but the patience and manner in which they shared
their knowledge.
We plan to make this a weekly event each Wednesday at 1.40. Interested students in grade 6 will be provided
with the opportunity to volunteer each week.
BHPS Student Banking Program–Bendigo Bank
The Barwon Heads Bendigo Bank is now offering a student banking program which commenced today. The
Bendigo Bank has been a long-time supporter of the school as well as a major supporter of a multiple
organisations within our local community. Their commitment to community support has been clearly evident
in not just financial terms but in service as well. The Bendigo Bank was a major sponsor of our fair and also
provided resourcing and staffing to the school to assist in our major fundraiser for the year. The Bendigo Bank
will have a student banking table set up at school every Thursday prior to 9am.

ANZACs and POPPIES
Over the past two weeks the Grade 5’s have been
learning about ANZAC day and the ANZAC spirit.
As a homework task in preparation for this week’s
special ANZAC service, students were asked to write
a poem on ANZACs or POPPIES. One would be
chosen to be read at assembly. Due to the
overwhelmingly fantastic poetry we received, we
thought it would be fantastic to display them in our
newsletter…
We celebrate this day,
In every possible way,
And because of our,
ANZACs we are here today,
They fought for OUR freedom,
Brave and rough, under constant attack,
Aussie mateship shone through,
The ultimate sacrifice for me and you,
I’d like to thank all diggers,,
Past and present,
Long live the ANZAC spirit.
By Molly Barsby
Growing from the shadows,
This blood red flower,
Brings life to the ANZACS at war,
Supporting with life,
These little red Poppies means so much,
Placed on crosses,
Row and row,
Now for remembering the ANZACS.
By Nelly Naulty
The cold, still night as the Anzac's pray,
Thinking of the day this tragic war would end,
The silence of them all was about to end,
The loss of soldiers made us cry but we must
stand tall not stagger but stand,
But that was not the end,
Restless nights and regrets were made,
Hunger took over us all and letters were received,
Poppies gave Anzac's hope through hopeless and
dark times,
This is a day we would not want to forget so lest
we forget.
By Olivia Gerrard
THEY REPRESENT 10,000 men,
Lying underneath the dark sandy ground,
Spread all around with a proud smiles on their
bright red petals,
Representing those who fought and those who
stood up to save their country,
They can whisper all the long-lost voices from the
forgotten fields of war that lie at the bottom of a
soldier’s heart.
By Anna Hewitt
Red,
The colour of the battle fields where the men
fought for our freedom,
Poppy,
The flower we wear to remember,
France,
Where it all started,
Wear the poppy with pride,
It also made France thrive,
Lest we forget.
By Nell Osborne Grigg
Red peaceful watching solders crying never fidgeting what
our solders did,
That day hopping to return with a red bouquet sprouting
where our solders once stood,
We will not forget that day so long as our poppies are here
to stay,
100 years have passed please remember us.
By Annika Potkonen
In Flanders fields the poppies grow.
Between the crosses, down below,
Cherished ANZACS rest in peace.
As fellow soldiers quickly decrease.
Today we stand here, remembering them,
Tomorrow we stand there, holding the stem.
The stem of the poppy, red against the sky
Tied in bunches, saying goodbye.
The only flower that grows in battles,
While gunfire happens the earth rattles.
The only flower that makes peace,
For brave hearts motionless underneath.
Lest We Forget
By Ella Panek Mitchell & Bebe Leake
As we watch,
Those beautiful poppies shine,
Around those warriors wounded,
And passed,
As we commemorate the soldiers,
I stop and visualise the poppies on the battlefield,
Giving hope to those that went to war
And fought for our country,
They make us who we are now and forever.
By Emily Patrick Knight
I saw a poppy when I was walking along,
One day,
It reminded me of the ANZACs,
That day,
The ANZACs fought for Australia 100 years ago,
Today,
I remember the ANZAC’s with poppies.
By Sam Guest
Poppies are red
Violets are blue
The ANZAC soldiers fought for you
They fought at sea
They fought on land
So together with pride
We all stand with poppies in our hand.
By Tess Cartin
As those poppies stand silent
And the years pass by
The flower returns year after year remembering
Red standing for courage and vravery
Black standing for death
Green standing for the life and spirit
Those soldiers we will never forget
Those soldiers who rought for us and our country
Those soldiers who were our fathers, our brothers, our uncles,
our sons.
By Tilly Rutjens

Poppies in the meadow
Standing nice and tall
Many soldiers fell young and old
At the wake of dawn and of the rising sun
We will remember them
Poppies fill the meadows
You wear me on ANZAC day
We stand for the soldiers that fought for us
They protected our country
In our hearts they will always stay.
By Sienna Wright
The soft red petels,
The big black dot,
Remind us of those who fought
And if it weren’t for them
We wouldn’t have what we’ve got
We remember them from day to day
And when they come to mind
Those many brave ones
Who faught many battles and found
Themselves in a bind
We use that flower
That small red poppy
To remember
To remember them
By Hero Partos Slattery
Poppies are red,
as red as could be.
How we lost so many lives
Is such a tragedy.
As a poppy lays, on the sand
gently above, a solider land.
We won't forget,
in any way,
because the poppy lays,
for a sigh of HOPE.
We will remember the ANZAC men,
Even if there dead.
As a poppy lays
for a sign of peace.
A poppy will lay
Above the soldier’s grave,
Which we call a sign of hope
By Jennifer Koumis
I stare into the field.
The blank field.
Nothing.
Except for one poppy.
One special poppy.
A poppy to remember,
A poppy to thank.
A poppy more powerful then any.
An ANZAC poppy.
By Ané Smith
Red as blood,
Frail as an egg shell,
Timid and shy,
Left alone on the battlefield,
Silently watching,
Waiting,
Remembering.
By Sandy Tunn McGrath
The ANZACs went to war
They were only very young
It was awful what they saw
They left their families behind
To defend our country
We now live in a better place
Thanks to the ANZACs
My great grandfather was in world war 2
My grandfather was in the Vietnam war
It was scary what they had to do
Happy Anzac Day to you.
By Archie Wiltshire
Red fields everywhere,
Fallen soldiers lay on the sandy ground,
Families and friends gather at the grave of their
loved ones,
Soldiers watching as poppies grow,
Watching as their hope grows,
We shall remember them,
Lest we forget.
By Eevie Woods
Precious red liquid had soaked the vibrant flower,
All I could see for kilometres was a field painted red,
Amongst the wind were their whistles,
Low and calm,
They were moving in similar directions,
Acknowledging different emotions,
Through the poppy.
By Daisy O'Brien
I’ve never seen a poppy
Except on ANZAC day
I’ve never seen a war
Except on TV
I’ve never seen the Somme
It’s such a long way away
But today I remember the fallen
On the shores of Gallipoli
By Emma Dowsley
As it stands alone in no mans land,
It lets us remember the ANZACs
That fought for our country,
And the many people that sent
Hope and love from home.
By Jaspa Mitchell
Sometimes the best and most beautiful,
Things in the world cannot be seen or touched,
They can only be felt through the heart.
As I look down, I see a field of red poppies,
But why, why did the ANZACs go, not me?
I remember that every day I would look out,
And hope that I wouldn’t go.
Because I left, I wouldn’t get to say that I fought for
Australia
Our freedom, for our rights.

Easter Fair Wrap Up 2015
What a fantastic event we had this year, capped off with beautiful weather! I love to see it all come together so
nicely, always shed a tear at the start of the fun run and am amazed to see the huge crowd land at our school.
It’s a real team effort to bring the Sheepwash Classic, Art Show and Fair together and would not be possible
without our amazing, enthusiastic, caring committee, made up of staff and parents. I would be lost without
them! We appreciate all the cakes, preserves, scones, volunteers at the events, lucky tubs donations, etc and
all the work that goes on behind the scenes. Thank You!!
Thank you to my wonderful Eli and Gabe for giving up a large part of their holiday and time with their very
distracted mother as I focussed on the Fair. They also love to help Warren set up. I know that Ezra and
Abigail were a great help to Kylie with setting up the Art Show. Thanks guys!
I would like to personally thank Darren for all the work he puts into the Fair. He puts in hours of personal
time, supports my decisions and puts up with my many requests and is always happy to help wherever
needed. He is running around picking up extra supplies for us, the last to leave the Art Party and back at
school for clean up and Fair set up early Good Friday, then puts in a twelve hour day on the day of the fun run
and fair. Thank you Darren!

This is a fun, whole school activity that we take part in each year. In previous years, we have had amazing
success (100% participation and completion). This challenge encourages students to read widely and develop a
love for Literacy.
Grade Prep, Grade 1’s & 2’s
Class teachers will read 30 challenge books to students in their grade, and record the titles and authors onto a
chart. I will then enter these book titles onto the Premiers Reading Challenge website.

Students read 15 books (10 must be from the Challenge list.) They then enter their books read onto the
Premiers Reading Challenge website. (Their teacher has their usernames & passwords.) Students are
