A word from our Principal
I’m hoping all our families are managing to stay dry and
warm as winter has certainly arrived. Please remember to
check that your child’s uniform still has their name on it as
these tend to disappear over time. (Like the piece of
uniform.)
School Review - Parent Forum
Schools undertake a school review every 4 years which
results in the production of a 4 year Strategic Plan. We are
hoping to gain as much information and feedback as
possible to support us in this review. Tomorrow, June the
5th BHPS will be hosting a parent forum as part of our
school review processes. An independent facilitator will
meet with parents to seek feedback from them. This
feedback will form part of the school’s self-evaluation, a key
document that is part of our school review. We understand
that this will not be convenient for all parents, but all
parents will be provided with an alternate opportunity to
provide feedback at a later date. The facilitator requested
this time so as to provide an opportunity to receive some
verbal feedback in manageable numbers that allow full
participation.
Schools engage in one of two types of review every 4 years:
peer review, or priority review. The type of review a school
undertakes will be determined following assessment of the
school’s performance against a consistent set of statewide
measures about students’ achievement, engagement and

wellbeing, and the productivity of their school. Measures will be drawn from the School Performance
Framework. Schools performing above key performance thresholds will engage in a peer review. Schools
performing below the thresholds will engage in a priority review. BHPS will be undertaking a peer review. The
forum will be held in the staff room at 9am Friday 5th June.
BHPS Superstars
Last Saturday morning the sportsmanship of one of our grade 6 students was made evident to me by the
parent of another child who witnessed the selfless gesture. The U12 Barwon Heads ‘Seagulls’ football team
which is made up of many BHPS students played a very tough match against Lara, eventually being defeated
by just 5 points. They were understandably disappointed as is the way of these types of sporting encounters.
They huddled together with their coach and parents for the post match address. There were a lot of sad and
dejected faces. The coach began handing out the awards for ‘Best On Ground’. He came to award Jye Bartley,
who was very deserving of receiving one of those awards after such a tough fought out game. Jye stood up to
accept the award only to ask the coach if he could please hand the award to someone he thought played ‘a
great game’! The face of the new recipient of the award, who is a much younger player and student, was
apparently something to remember. The parent said it was so nice to see something so good come out of what
was a disappointing morning for the players. The parents, coaches and most importantly the players walked
away a lot happier from such a kind and selfless act (especially as the award included a chocolate bar!!)
Congratulations Jye on your sportsmanship, your compassion for others, and your selfless attitude and
maturity.
Also a big congratulations to Will McGregor who placed 30th in the cross country and Rocker whoplaced 39th
in the Cross Country.
We certainly know we have so many very talented students at BHPS, and have reserved a section in our
newsletter dedicated to our ‘BHPS Superstars.’ If you have any nominations/information, can you please
email the details to the school email address so that we can celebrate publish the many achievements of our
wonderful students.
Oberon High School Enhancement Program
I have been notified by the school that the following students were successful in earning a place in Oberon’s
2016 Select Entry Enhancement Program:


Max Brownbridge
Morgan Williams
The quality of these students throughout the testing and interview process was labelled a credit to our
teachers and school by the OHS. I was informed that they were greatly impressed by the overall quality
of young people applying for their select entry class.
Well done and congratulations Max and Morgan
Student Health
Please note the following:




In Australia, our influenza ‘flu’ season typically runs from May to October, usually peaking in August.
At various times throughout the year including flu season, it is important to remind our staff and
students of the importance of good hygiene at school and at home.
Staff and students are encouraged to:
o cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing
o throw used tissues in plastic-lined rubbish bins
o wash their hands with soap and water, preferably with warm water if available
o reduce the spread of germs by avoiding touching their eyes, nose and mouth.
All staff were provided with influenza immunisation

Camps, Sports and Excursions Funds
The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund has been provided to ensure that no student will miss out on the
opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. School camps provide
children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how
the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum.
CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips,
camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster
parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. The allowance will be paid to the school to use towards expenses
relating to camps, excursions, or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The annual CSEF amount per
student will be: • $125 for primary school students • $225 for secondary school students. We have sent home
a CSEF application form to all families or one can be downloaded from www.education.vic.gov.au/csef
Closing Date: You should lodge a CSEF application form at the school by 26 June 2015. For more
information about the CSEF visit www.education.vic.gov.au/csef
Active Travel
A new sign is being installed around Barwon Heads to encourage active travel to and from school. There are
two signs being put up, one for pick up and one drop off. This will help ensure that students can be active if
they live far away or if their parents don’t want to let them walk the whole way.

After School Care News
Hi Everyone!
This week at after school care it has been very cold, so we have had lots of
inside games to mix into our theme for this week which is WINTER! We have
had some discussions about our theme of winter and discussed some activities and foods that we eat in the
winter time. Although it has been very cold, we did spend some time outside playing for several minutes and
we have also been able to go into the gym to play several group games such as tiggy, line tiggy, green light & red
light, soccer, basketball and musical statues. There has been plenty of participation from everyone which is
always really good to see! We also baked a chocolate cake this week to celebrate a birthday in After School
Care!
Our buddy bear leaders have been showing some great leadership skills and are showing lots of enthusiasm
and excitement in their roles. It is great to see them taking it so well. As buddy bear leaders, they are the
leaders in ensuring that everyone in after school care is safe and happy as our mascot buddy bear represents
anti-bullying!
Once again, Families please note that we currently only provide after school care but would love to offer
Before School Care to our families. We are taking expressions of interest for BEFORE SCHOOL CARE.
We have had some more interest but we need a couple more families to show their interest in order for
Before school care to go ahead. ved so that we have the numbers to provide the before school care service.
Please let us know if you are interested to ensure we can try and provide this service as soon as possible. You
can let us know by calling the OSHC phone (number is provided below) or calling into the office/room which
is located near the gym, we are here Monday to Friday 2:30pm to 6:00pm. We would love to hear from you :)
If you have any questions please, feel free to call us on 0432 636 625.
