A Word from Our Principal
I cannot be more complimentary and appreciative of our
school community in their support of our 2015 Easter Fair.
Whist we are at the mercy of the weather, we couldn’t have
hoped for better conditions. They were absolutely perfect!
It can be very easy to overlook exactly how much work goes
in to ensuring our Fair is a success, not only because
everything appears to run so effortlessly and efficiently, but
also due to the fact that it biennially is a combination of 3
MAJOR events that run over 3 days. However, behind the
scenes there are those who, due to their countless hours of
voluntarily contribution, dedication and diligence to detail,
that know better! It is with the sincerest of thanks and
gratitude that I acknowledge our very hard working Easter
Fair committee, particularly our resilient and selfless
coordinator Sarah Jackson. She is the rock!
I would also like to acknowledge our individual major event
coordinators:
Kylie Valentine: Art Show
Aaron and Danni Smith, Karen Finn: Sheepwash Classic
Enormous roles in their own right which they do without
complaint and without drama.
In the very near future we will be in a position to announce
exactly how financially successful our Fair has been – but on
a community level we already know that it has been an
overwhelming success.
I would also like to acknowledge the significant contribution
of the BHPS staff for their support and contribution to the
Fair. I sincerely appreciate their hard work and enthusiasm in
support of school fund raising, over and above their core
business of teaching and learning, and during their holiday
period. I can also announce that whilst an ‘official’ figure is
Barwon Heads Primary School promotes integrity, life-long learning and the attainment of excellence.
unable to be released at this time due to the finalisation of a number of accounts and invoices we are still
waiting for, we do know that the Fair will significantly subsidise the installation of its target project: Shade sails
over the senior playground.
All I would also like to acknowledge and thank our local community for their generous financial support of
our fair, particularly our major sponsors for their ongoing support of our school. We cannot thank local
businesses and organisations enough for all that they have provided.
Major Sponsors:
RT Edgar: Art Show
Barwon Coast: Sheepwash Classic (Course and donation)
Bellarine Property: Sheepwash Classic (Signage and medallions)
Bendigo Bank: Easter Fair (Staffing and donation)
Tonik: Easter Fair (Product supply)
ANZAC Day
BHPS will be involved in a number of ANZAC day events working up to the official day on the 25th April. As
ANZAC Day falls on a Saturday there is no public holiday on a school day. Our JSC has been invited to
march at the Barwon Heads ceremony on the Saturday where we will be laying a wreath at the Barwon Heads
RSL and our captains will be reciting poetry for the official service. Wallington Primary School will also be
participating this year in a larger event than usual due to this being the centenary year of the ANZAC Day
campaign. They will be provided with the exact details on Monday next week. The school captains will also be
attending a special school service with me in Geelong on the 24th April at Johnstone Park.
Student Traffic Report
Once again dangerous traffic behaviour by our students riding bikes has been reported to the school by
concerned community members. This has been an ongoing concern for the school in regards to the wellbeing
and safety of our students. Total disregard for road rules and car traffic has been reported particularly in the
Reid Street/Clifford Parade area. I implore parents to sit down with their children and have one on one
conversation with them about their road behaviour. I will yet again be covering this at assembly tomorrow.
Tuesday Lunches - Sushi
Sushi Tuesday commenced this week. Orders must be in by Monday – the correct money placed in a labelled
envelope. Mitsue McEnroe, mum of Taiyo and Kirra in grade 2 and Prep, if offering a variety of choices of
this popular food.
BHPS Student Banking Program–Bendigo Bank
The Barwon Heads Bendigo Bank is now offering a student banking program which commenced today. The
Bendigo Bank has been a long time supporter of the school as well as a major supporter of a multiple
organisations within our local community. Their commitment to community support has been clearly evident
in not just financial terms but in service as well. The Bendigo Bank was a major sponsor of our fair and also
provided resourcing and staffing to the school to assist in our major fundraiser for the year. The Bendigo Bank
will have a student banking table set up at school every Thursday prior to 9am.

Classroom Helpers Program
Tuesday 21 & Wednesday 22 April 9am
– 10:30am
The Classroom Helpers Program will run for 2 days and begins on
Tuesday April 21 at 9:05 – 10:30am in the school library.
The second session will be on Wednesday April 22 at the same time.
It is recommended that you attend both sessions as each session will cover different topics
such as, the way children learn to read, writing development, the importance of speaking
and listening and hints on how to help children in
a classroom situation.
The program will also outline the roles and expectations for Classroom Helpers as well as the
importance of confidentiality following a visit to the classroom.
Unfortunately we are not able to offer childcare for toddlers and hope that you are able to
make some arrangements with friends or family.
If you would like to be part of this program which gives you the
opportunity to make the most of your time as a helper in the classroom,
please return the slip below to the office or your child’s teacher
indicating that you are happy to commit to attending.
Forms will also be available at the Office

Leo Bent and Ted O'Malley competed in the Otway Odessey mountain bike competition
on the weekend. They rode 15km on single trail tracks through the Otways near Forrest.
It was a great effort by both of them. Well done boys!
BHPS Flag Adventures
Picture One:
This picture is taken on Mt Bogong in the Summer time
Which Tias and his family climbed, it took 8 hours return.
It is the tallest mountain in Victoria.
Picture Two:
This photo is a bit of history behind as we are on top of
Gaustatoppen, in order to get there you have to go 500 m into the Mountain in a tram which only takes 8
people, then we go on a old Lift cart straight up inside the mountain to the top. This was used under the war
for the army and was top secret and open to public From 2011. It is all linked to the story of the heavy water
during the War. (The film heroes of Telemark).
Then we skied down the mountain. - Tias

After School Care – Camp Australia
Barwon Heads Primary | 14th April 2015
Hi Everyone!
A great big welcome back to the familiar and new families of Barwon Heads Primary School! We hope that
everyone has had a well rested week and is ready for the term ahead. We have many fun activities and games
planned for the weeks coming and cannot wait to get stuck in with everyone!
This week the children have enjoyed talking about their adventures and fun over the holidays and they are
bursting with left over energy! To burn some of their energy we have participated in some indoor and outdoor
active group games such as Tiggy, night at the museum and 40 40 homebase! We also had a competition this
week that involved the children completing a word search with some 'back to school' words and competing to
find the words the fastest! Some of the children struggled working on their own so they worked together to find
the hard words, it was a very close competition!
We are looking for some pre-loved sporting equipment, games and puzzles to add to our after school care
collection, if you have anything you no longer use, please feel free to drop in, we would really appreciate it.
Families please note that whilst we currently only provide after school care we are taking expressions of
interest for BEFORE SCHOOL CARE, we have a bit of interest but we need a couple more families to get
involved so that we have the numbers to provide the before school care service. Please let us know if you are
interested to ensure we can try and provide this service as soon as possible. You can let us know by calling the
OSHC phone (number is provided below) or calling into the office/room which is located near the gym, we
are here Monday to Friday 2:30pm to 6:00pm. We would love to hear from you :)
Any questions please call us on 0432 636 625.

Bendigo Bank School Banking
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Barwon Heads Community Bank® Branch are excited to announce we will be offering School Banking
to Barwon Heads Primary School students beginning Term 2 on a Thursday morning from 8.30am-9am.
Our ‘Bank’ will be set up outside the entrance to the office building, parents are encouraged to bring their
little Bankers along.
Students who take part will receive a Piggy Banking Pack, which includes a Piggy Savings Treasure Map.
Each time your child makes a deposit they will receive a cool sticker or stamp, with little surprises each
time they reach ‘Piggy Island’. This will encourage our Bankers to keep coming back each week to make a
deposit. If you would like to get your little Banker involved with School Banking, there are three options:
In Branch: Bring the required identification for you and your child into Barwon Heads Community
Bank® Branch and open a Piggy Saver with the help of our friendly staff.
At School: Fill out an application form available from the office, then provide identification for the
account holder and parent/s who can sign on the account.

2015 Premiers Reading Challenge has begun!
This is a fun, whole school activity that we take part in each year. In previous years, we have had amazing
success (100% participation and completion). This challenge encourages students to read widely and develop a
love for Literacy.
Grade Prep, Grade 1’s & 2’s
Class teachers will read 30 challenge books to students in their grade, and record the titles and authors onto a
chart. I will then enter these book titles onto the Premiers Reading Challenge website.
Grades 3, 4, 5 & 6
Students read 12 books (10 must be from the Challenge list.) They then enter their books read onto the
Premiers Reading Challenge website. (Their teacher has their usernames & passwords.) Students are
encouraged to read a wide variety of books by at least 5 different authors. Some enthusiastic readers have
already completed the challenge. Congratulations to those children. Happy reading everyone!
