Spring has sprung; school is almost out; summer is upon us, and that means one thing at my
house—it’s VBS time!! This will be my ninth Vacation Bible School serving as the director, and
I have loved every minute of it! May is crazy busy but it is also so much fun preparing for this
fabulous event! VBS is a week like no other, where our church membership has the opportunity
to not only minister to the children at our church, but to reach out to the community and impact
Birmingham and the world for Christ.
One of my favorite things about VBS is our annual mission project. This year our VBS offering
will continue our support of Operation Christmas Child. This past fall, our church collected
936 shoeboxes to send to children around the world. Every shoebox gift delivered by OCC is
a tangible expression of God’s love. But a shoebox is just the beginning. It also presents an
opportunity in more than 100 countries for OCC’s church partners to invite children into a deeper
relationship with Jesus Christ through the Greatest Journey discipleship program. It costs just $6
per child to participate in this program and our goal this VBS is to raise $12,000 to sponsor 2,000
children!
I would like to encourage you to be part of the excitement June 1–5. Sign up your kids, friends,
neighbors, and grandchildren to attend. Encourage your teenagers to be teen helpers. Volunteer to
shepherd a class, pray for VBS, or support the mission project. I promise you won’t regret it! Yes,
it is tiring, yes, it is work—but you will be blessed and it will be the highlight of your summer!
