We will be celebrating several historic anniversaries this year: the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, the 200th anniversary of Waterloo and the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice in Wonderland. These historical events are featured during our Festival through talks, family activities and musical events. Alice in Wonderland is the theme for the Festival. We have a kids’ treasure hunt where children can hunt for items in shop windows that tell the story of Alice in Wonderland, fancy dress at the children’s parade, and a celebration- Buzz in Wonderland- by one of our charities for this year, Project Buzz. We will also be hosting a Mad Hatter’s Buffet at the Rutland Hotel and, lastly, it will be our theme in the Café at the Garden Party. We will also be able to enjoy old favourites including musical entertainment and quizzes in the local pubs, and shops, concerts and talks in St. Mark’s and at the Beacon in Broomhill, as well as the ever popular five-a-side football tournament which attracts many teams of local schoolchildren. Another very popular event is the Open Gardens which will take place on Sunday 14 June. The 41st Festival begins on 5 June 2015 with an opening concert by the world renowned organist of Liverpool Cathedral who will be giving a recital on the newly restored St. Mark’s Church organ. The Festival finishes on the weekend of 20/21 June with the usual Garden Party on the church green and the Festival Service at St. Mark’s on the Sunday. This year’s chosen charities are BBEST Action Limited (a neighbourhood planning forum, to produce a neighbourhood plan for the Broomhill, Broomfield, Endcliffe, Somerfield & Tapton areas), Broomhill Community Library (to support the developing long term plan for the library building to operate as a community centre in Broomhill), Project Buzz (Buzz was originally set up in 1999, in response to parental requests for somewhere safe for children to play and now provides services to support vulnerable children and families living locally), and Sheffield Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (established in 1980; its key objectives are to alleviate the extensive consequences of the trauma of rape and sexual abuse, and to raise awareness of the issues of rape and sexual violence). Jane Padget, Chair of the Broomhill Festival Planning Group We hope you enjoy our 2015 Programme. From The Festival Planning Group 3 Chosen Charities for BBEST The BBEST (Broomhill, Broomfield, Endcliffe, Somerfield and Tapton areas) Neighbourhood Planning Forum was formed in 2013 following the 2011 Localism Act which gave power to local communities to create their own local development plans. The local plan will sit alongside the city’s umbrella plan and gives us the power to set our own vision for the future of our area. Development began in 2014 and key themes of architecture, transport, retail green spaces and housing have been actively worked on. The Forum has open meetings for all who live and work in the area to attend, and is also working on a number of projects, such as supporting the development of a community hub. An early draft plan will be discussed in November, leading to the production of the final plan in 2016 and a vote for all residents in the area to approve the plan. The plan, once it is in place, opens up avenues to obtain further funding for local projects. Look out for details of the meetings on our website and in Broomhill Library. To join BBEST, email [email protected], or for more information visit our website at: bbest.org.uk. PROJECT BUZZ At Buzz, our aim is to enrich the lives of families within the local community. Buzz is service user led, meaning that all activities are planned in response to requests. Our values are really important to us and are alive in our everyday work; inclusive, passionate, positive, responsive and dynamic. Since 1999, we have developed trusting relationships with our families, offering activities such as an after school club, holiday activities, family learning courses and international events. Many of the children we work with have behavioural, social, emotional and other special 4 needs. These children are supported within our 'Buzz Buddies' group, where they are given a high level of support from highly skilled staff and volunteers. Many of the parents that attend courses and activities at Buzz speak English as an additional language. As a result, parents often struggle with confidence and independence issues. To support our work, we regularly hold fundraising events and have good links with the Sheffield Universities. Within the last couple of years, we have developed our social enterprise; Children’s parties, wedding crèches and mobile crèches. The income generated through this is directed straight back into our work with families in need, within the local community. www.buzzsheffield.co.uk BROOMHILL COMMUNITY LIBRARY (BCL) BCL is the voluntary organisation which, since the end of September 2014, has provided the library service for Broomhill and its neighbouring areas. It is the third busiest branch library in the City. All the basic library services - books, newspapers, audio-visual material (DVDs, CDs), and computers for internet access and private study are provided. It also offers a varied programme of events & activities for people of all ages and the children’s weekly groups are very well supported. The building may also be booked by other organisations who wish to use it. BCL now has a membership of well over 100 volunteers and also a Friends Group. The volunteers staff the Library and carry out all the wide range of tasks necessary to create an organisation from scratch, to develop it and run it as an effective company. Broomhill Library is the only ‘public’ building in the area and BCL’s members hope to develop the building and its historic garden into a comprehensive community facility. If you would like to join BCL as a volunteer and/or as a Friend, you can obtain more information from the web site - broomhilllibrary.org.uk - and volunteers in the Library. the 2015 Festival SHEFFIELD RAPE AND SEXUAL ABUSE CENTRE Sheffield Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (SRASAC), established in 1980, is an independent charity organisation providing support for women and girls in Sheffield who have experienced rape or sexual abuse at any times in their lives. Tickets : £5/£3 DAVID STOKER The Festival has great pleasure in featuring the photography of David Stoker within the Art Exhibition again this year. September 30th will be the fifth anniversary of David’s death. David died at the age of 30 of a brain tumour. He was a much loved member of St. Mark’s church and served the church and the Festival very well. He gave freely of his talent and considerable design ability, creating much of its print work including the St. Mark’s Church logo and much of the Broomhill Festival material. Although he trained and lived in Sheffield, David was born and brought up in Derbyshire, and from time to time loved to escape to the hills around his village of Winster. He came to St Mark’s via the University (he said) because they offered a good lunch to students on Sundays. David was a talented photographer with that rare ability to capture the essence of a subject. Photography and art was well established in his family so it was no surprise that David had a wonderful eye for a good picture. Rarely without a camera, David photographed many Church and Festival events, leaving a large archive of pictures. We will have a supply of his work for sale and we are sure he would be pleased to know that his work is still generating funds for the Festival charities. 13 The 13-22 June 2015 at St Marks Church The work of this year’s featured artists will be exhibited during the day and when the Church is open for evening events. Featured Artists SAM GROOM Sam is a Sheffield based printmaker working from her home studio. She loves all kinds of printmaking and uses a range of techniques, from wood and linocut printing to silkscreen and potato-cut printing in her work. She likes to create bold, brightly coloured, playful prints that are inspired by the simple and everyday things in life that she sees around her. At the moment she is printing trees, flowers, birds and terraced houses. She often combines printing techniques and creates one off printed pieces rather than producing printed editions. As well as printing onto paper, she prints onto fabric and recycled cardboard to produce items such as lampshades, tea towels, scarves, bags and free standing printed artwork. She also really enjoys making collages using paper from discarded prints. She likes arranging and composing the simple shapes, textures and patterns of the papers. Her collages, as well as being art works in their own right, are also often the inspiration for new prints. She runs a range of printmaking classes from her home studio as well as from various other locations around Sheffield. www.samanthagroom.co.uk 14 STEVE ELLIOTT Steve Elliott's pastel paintings are inspired by the open spaces of the Peak National Park. Vibrant hues, richness of tone and rhythmic composition are hall marks of Steve’s lightfilled paintings, which set out to capture the spirit and atmosphere of the Derbyshire landscape. Broad skies, hill brows and open spaces feature prominently. His expressive paintings evoke the drama of light and colour in all seasons. Images range from naturalistic to semiabstract, and draw on the elemental character of the Dark Peak with its windswept heather and bleachedgrass moorlands, gritstone outcrops and fast-changing, active skies. "The versatility of pastel is superbly adapted to the portrayal of light and colour. Subtle textures, vibrant hues and atmospheric tones are characteristic of my work. I enjoy finding new ways of expressing the broader visual qualities I look for in landscape, seeking expressive images which will resonate with the viewer." Work is exhibited at major contemporary art fairs and exhibitions across the UK.
