Term 1, Week 8: 16-22 March 2015
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Nau mai, haere mai, greetings
We have reached week eight leaving only two weeks
remaining in Term 1. The last day being Holy Thursday, 2
April 2015 and school will finish at the normal time of 2.50pm.
The Catholic Character Review team just completed a three
day review of the College. In the verbal report back, the
review team was very complimentary about the tone of the
College, the pastoral support given to families and the way
our students are able to express their faith understanding.
We thank those parents who completed survey forms and/or
came to the community meetings as you helped generate a
complete picture for the review team. We also thank our staff
and students for the way they responded to the review team
over the last three days. We will now await the written report.
New Sport Co-ordinator
We welcome Mrs Sarah Kirkpatrick to the role of Sports
Co-ordinator. Sarah has taken over from Mrs Kama Laing,
as Kama has moved into a teaching role in the College.
Both Sarah and Kama have been relieving for our permanent
sports co-ordinator, Kate Sherriff, who is undertaking health
treatment. We wish Kate all the best and pray for a speedy
recovery.
We are confident that Sarah will manage the transition into
the College with ease. Sarah comes with a wealth of
expertise and experience in sports management.
To contact Sarah phone 867 9309 extension 228 or email
[email protected].
St Joseph Feast Day – 19 March
th
March 19 is St Joseph’s feast day and an important day for
all schools with close ties to the Sisters of St Joseph and the
work of Mary MacKillop.
There is very little about the life of Joseph in Scripture but
still, we know that he was the husband of Mary, the foster
father of Jesus, a carpenter and a man who was not wealthy.
We also know that he came from the royal lineage of King
David.
We can see from his actions in scripture that Joseph was a
compassionate man, and obedient to the will of God. He also
loved Mary and Jesus and wanted to protect and provide for
them.
Mary MacKillop named her Order of Sisters after St Joseph
because she was inspired by this man of faith who acted with
courage and compassion, even when he didn’t fully
understand what God was asking of him.
Caritas - Survive a Slum
th
This year, the challenge will be held on Friday the 27 and
th
Saturday the 28 of March and will be a ‘Survive a Slum’
experience. The challenge will be for students in Years 1113. For further details please contact Karyn Sadler, Director
of Religious Studies at [email protected].
Year 7 and 8 Ski Trip
10-14 August 2015
The College has decided to alternate our Whagara Camp
(Year 7) and the Ski Trip (Year 8) so they occur every
second year. This means the combined Year 7 and 8
classes (152 students) all get to go skiing or snow boarding
at Mount Ruapehu this year.
All Year 7 and 8 students have been given a permission slip
and emails have been sent out with further information and
th
fundraising options to parents/caregivers. Today, Friday 20
March the students will be given their gear list to take home.
Because of the need for woolens, polyprops and waterproof
gear we strongly suggest you borrow items from family and
friends unless your child already has these clothes. Many
shops such as The Warehouse, Op Shops, Salvation Army
etc have these items at very reasonable prices. But don’t
leave till the last week or they may have sold out.
If you have have not received some or all of the Ski Trip
information please contact Mark Naden 867 9309 extn 214 or
email [email protected].
Year 7 and 8 Social – 27 March
Please
note
that
students are to remain
at the Social from
6.15pm until 9.00pm.
If a student wants to
leave the Social early
this is only permitted if
one of their parents
collects them from the
gymnasium.
At
9.00pm, all students
will leave to go home.
This
is
on
the
understanding
that
parents are in the car
park waiting for them
or have arranged safe
transport for them.
Year 7-13 Progress Reports
The College produces four weekly progress reports for all
students in Years 7-13. The second of these will be emailed
st
to parents on Tuesday 31 March 2015.
We will hold a parent afternoon on Wednesday 1
2.30pm to 4.30pm.
st
April,
This is a time when teachers are available to meet with
parents and discuss their child’s progress. We hold these
parent afternoons after we email the progress reports.

NZAIMS Games
6-11 September 2015
In the past we have sent our elite Year 7 and 8 athletes to
this event.
Every year we are aware of the cost to families with the event
being so close to our ski trip (10-14 August). Therefore we
have decided to send a staff member with our College team
every even year - this year we are not skiing.
In 2015 we are still happy to coordinate entries for you. If
you wish to take your child yourself, they have to be entered
through the school. Please contact Mark Naden if you are

Prayer
St Joseph, you are the loving husband of the Virgin Mary, the foster
father of Jesus, the protector and provider of the Holy Family and of
all families. We have complete confidence in your loving care for
new life and in your fidelity to the family. We commend our efforts
to your prayers and protection. Help us always to defend the gift of
human life that it may grow to the abundance of eternal life
promised and bestowed on us by your son, our brother, Jesus
Christ.
We pray for the Sisters of St Joseph who have answered the
call to serve you through teaching, through prayer and through
working for justice.
We pray for schools with strong connections to St Joseph and
Mary MacKillop, may their students and staff aspire to live the
Gospel values every day as shown by St Joseph.
Loving God, friend of children and the poor, be with us as we try
each day to be messengers of your good news. Through the
prayers and example of Jesus, of Joseph and of Mary MacKillop,
help us to make a difference in our world by being aware of those
who are most in need of care and support. May we be generous in
sharing what we have and being a friend to those who are alone.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.
May the blessings of God be with you all
Paul McGuinness
