Campion College News NEWSLETTER No. 13 Term 2, Week 3 & 4: 4-17 May 2015 Dear Parents/Caregivers, Nau mai, haere mai, greetings 48 Hour Film Festival st Nepal Mufti Day Thank You In what can only be described as an outpouring of generosity, Campion College rose to the occasion for last Tuesday‟s Mufti Day. Students were extremely generous in their giving. Staff also contributed to the donations with around 11 teachers dressing as students for the day. We are very happy to announce that Campion College will deposit $2,150.00 to Caritas‟ Emergency Appeal for the people of Nepal. Caritas will ensure this money goes towards providing shelter and relief items to those who have lost their homes, providing first aid to the sick and injured and accessing safe and clean water supplies. Our donation will be very gratefully received. Thank you very much to all the students, their families and to the staff members who gave so generously for this very worthy cause. rd Two weekends from 7.00pm on May 1 to 7.00pm May 3 , many students from Campion College took part in the annual 48hour film festival. During the competition entrants are given a genre, a character, prop, line of dialogue and a type of camera shot which they need to incorporate into their film. They then have 48 hours to plan, film and edit the film. Gisborne is one of only seven regions around NZ who offer the competition locally and this year we were going to be dropped because of not enough teams. Thankfully our students have got behind the event and we entered seven teams from the College. Across Gisborne we had a total of 26 teams enter. The teams had a great time and did extremely well to complete their films in time. Only one out of the seven teams were disqualified for handing their film in 15 minutes too late. The local heats are this weekend then finalists will be announced after that. Senior Campion Ball – Years 11-13 Retreats This week the Catholic Youth Team ran retreats for our students in Years 7, 8, 9. The theme for the Year 7 and 8 retreat is „Uncover your Talents‟ and the Year 9 students will be focussing on „What makes me Happy?‟ The retreats will be held in the Parish Centre which is adjoining the Church. Year 7-13 Progress Reports The College produces four weekly progress reports for all students in Years 7-13. The third of these were emailed to th parents on Wednesday 13 May 2015. We will hold a parent afternoon on Friday 15 3.10pm to 4.30pm. th May, This is a time when teachers are available to meet with parents and discuss their child‟s progress. We hold these parent afternoons after we email the progress reports. To make a time to meet with teachers please phone the office 8679309. Ball season is once again approaching and along with the organising committee we want to provide a social function which is enjoyable and fun for the students and their partners while at the same time ensuring the safety of all. The Campion Ball in past years has been an extremely successful event and this year‟s ball is on the 20 June 2015 at the Bushmere Arms. We are optimistic that this year‟s occasion should reach the same high standards. There are a number of conditions which students and their partners must adhere to if they are to attend the Ball. The Ball is open to students from Years 11, 12 and 13. It is an alcohol, drug and cigarette free evening. Students are expected to dress formally for the Ball. Every year there is a great deal of national media interest in school balls and the roles and responsibilities of the schools involved in them. The College only has direct control over the Ball itself. We rely on parental support to ensure that students are kept safe before the Ball and after the Ball has finished. Pre-Ball activities are becoming popular. While we have no objections to students meeting before coming to the Ball and, in fact, this can help create further enjoyment for the evening, we do have a major concern if any students are drinking alcohol. We have stipulated that the Ball must be alcoholfree and we therefore caution students that they must not arrive at the Ball if they have been drinking alcohol. If they do so and it is detected they will be refused entry to the Ball or sent home during the evening. This would be a shame as many people go to quite an effort in their presentation. The Ball will run from 8.00pm to 1.00am. The late finish is to help overcome the need for further social entertainment such as after-Ball parties. The College does not support after-Ball parties. We believe that these activities often expose students to unnecessary risks. I ask all parents and students to carefully read the rules and responsibilities for attending the Ball as we do not want students to be disappointed on the night. We pray that we continue to provide a safe, enjoyable social event. Commitment Compassion Community CHRIST Commitment Compassion Community Campion College News NEWSLETTER No. 13 Term 2, Week 3 & 4: 4-17 May 2015 Smokefree Rockquest 2015 The Annual Smokefreerockquest heats were held at the newly-revamped War Memorial Theatre. Almost four hours of music with a great variety of genre made for a very entertaining afternoon. The performance standard was again raised from last year and the afternoon was a huge learning curve for many. Last Tuesday and Friday students were also lucky enough to have mentoring from Annie Crummer (When the Cats Away, Netherworld Dancing Toys etc) which helped everyone raise their standards and get some expert advice on performing and song writing. Campion had thirty seven students in twelve entries over both the band and solo/duo category. Our middle school students performed convincingly; “Jack and the Beanstalks” played their song „Like it is‟ and “Element”, performing as a three piece – vocals and guitar. The Year 10 bands which performed were “Triple S.T” with driving guitar and drums topped off with an equally driving rap, and “Shattered Caution”, who were able to make the regional final lineup with their song „Monopoly‟. From the senior end of the school were “Sesame Dream”, a four piece combo, with crystal clear instrumental parts and Jacob Gedye‟s strong vocal line, “New Millenium” with Connor McBreen‟s resounding vocals and “Shadows in the Darkness” who were also able to make the regional finals. not disappoint the crowd – their unique sound and consistent standard were relaxing and entertaining. Only two acts were able to go through the regional finals and the next stage for National Selection, and “One and a Half Men” and “Lara” were selected. Huge congratulations to them, and “Shattered Caution” and “Shadows in the Darkness” for making the Regionals. The East Coast regional final is at the War Memorial Theatre on Friday 22 May, starting at 7.00pm. Tickets are $10.00 school students and $15.00 adults from Ticket Direct or at the door. PTFA – Thank You The PTFA would like to thank all those who helped with the PTFA Car Boot Sale. We raised $453.40. Especially thank you to Kaiponi Farms for donating the produce and Louise Savage for organising the sausage sizzle. Thank You We have had an amazing response to our request for preloved Rugby or Soccer boots. Thank you to those who have donated boots, these have been passed onto many very greatful families in our College community. In the solo/duo category, with seven entries from all Gisborne schools, Campion featured strongly. “One and a half Men” (Liam and Ronan Wallace) were a resounding hit with their reggae sound and relaxed stage presence. You could have heard a pin drop in the theatre when Lara Ajello played her haunting song and Grace Lupman sang her new original song with confidence and feeling. Stephany Van Der Walt made her debut performance representing Campion and the much anticipated “Lockstep” (Kiera and Caleb Swann) did Commitment Compassion Community CHRIST Commitment Compassion Community Campion College News NEWSLETTER No. 13 Term 2, Week 3 & 4: 4-17 May 2015 Campion College Sport NETBALL PAK 'n SAVE Gisborne Netball 16th May 2015 There are 102 games to be played this Saturday so please make sure you check the draw carefully. People should be able to worship God in any chosen format (or even choose not to if that is their desire). The following message has recently been received from the Marist Brothers network in New Zealand. It has originally come from Rev Andrew White the Vicar of Baghdad. The message reads: The islamist group (ISIS) just took over Quaragosh, the biggest Christian city in Iraq. There are hundreds of men, women and children who are being beheaded. The people are asking for prayers to be made on their behalf concerning the ongoing atrocity in their country. Please take one minute to pray for them. Pass this message across to all your contacts. They asked for this special prayer. Please, ensure you pass across the prayer request to the body of Christ for fervent prayers offered on behalf of the brothers, sisters and children in Iraq. May God bless you. From Andrew White the Vicar of Baghdad. May the blessings of God be with you all. Paul McGuinness PRINCIPAL Commitment Compassion Community CHRIST Commitment Compassion Community
