I hope that all of you have been enjoying our 2015
programs so far. As the Spring season wraps up and
Summer begins, we look forward to seeing you at our
upcoming Hawaiian Luau, Stress Reduction Workshops,
Educational Seminars, and ongoing weekly classes and
groups.
We are now offering an Esophageal Support Group. This
group will bring people together who have deen diagnosed with this site specific cancer.
If you have, or know someone who has, this diagnosis we would love for you to join us
here starting in May.
The Cancer Support Community Atlanta continues to bring us all together, year after
year, and that is a blessing. We all come from different walks of life, but share things
that will connect us forever.

Reconstruction

This free workshop will have information on
breast reconstruction after a breast cancer
diagnosis. Learn about breast reconstruction and non-reconstruction options, how to
make a decision that is right for you, medical
factors that can influence your decision, and
how to prepare for and what to expect after
surgery. This program will be led by Diane
Z. Alexander, M.D., FACS, Board Certified
Plastic Surgeon and Co-founder, Artisan
Plastic Surgery. This program is made possible with a charitable contribution from

Ingredients:
3 cups fresh or frozen purple hull peas
1 bay leaf
3 sprigs of fresh thyme
Exercise
2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
1 cup chopped onion
1 small red bell pepper, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
½ teaspoon sea salt
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 scallions, thinly sliced
3 cups cooked rice
Instructions:
1. Place peas, bay leaf and thyme sprigs
in a pot of salted water. Bring to a boil
and then gently simmer until the peas
are soft, about 20 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, heat oil in a medium
saute pan. Add onion and celery; sauté
for about 5 minutes. Add red bell pepper; sauté for an additional 3-5 minutes.
Add garlic; sauté for 30 seconds.

3. Drain the cooked peas, making sure
to remove the thyme stems and bay
leaf. Add cooked beans to the sautéed
vegetables and stir to combine. Season
with salt and pepper and top with sliced
scallions.

Ongoing support groups for people
with cancer are the heart of CSC Atlanta
programs. In Weekly Groups, people with
cancer offer support to one another, explore new ways of dealing with the stresses
of cancer and learn techniques to become
partners with their health care team.

Cancer Support Source
Survivorship Classes
Support
Cancer Support Source is a comprehensive,
web-based, distress screening program. It
was developed to offer anyone diagnosed
with cancer the opportunity to routinely be
screened for social and emotional distress.
This program provides each person who
completes the tool with a Personal Support
Care Plan that includes information and referrals for support services on both local and national levels.

What’s next after cancer treatment? Attend a
single class to help transition off of treatment and on to a healthy, new lifestyle. Each
session will include: “What is Survivorship?”, a review of Treatment Summaries
and Survivorship Care Plans, and effects of
treatment and wellness.

Gynecological Support Group
2nd Wednesday of the month,

This group is for women diagnosed with
a gynecological cancer. Meet with other
women who are facing similar situations.
CSC Atlanta offers a free service called
“Open to Options” that will help you
prepare for your next doctor’s visit during

What do you charge for your programs?
All of our programs are free and are led by licensed professionals. In addition,
our facility offers free parking.
Can I bring a friend or family member?
Caregivers, friends and family members are welcome to join you for most
programs at the Cancer Support Community Atlanta. We especially encourage
you to bring a support person with you to your initial New Member Orientation.
Do I have to be a patient at Northside Hospital?
Although we are affiliated with Northside Hospital, anyone can attend our programs, regardless of where they are treated.

Can I attend programs if I have completed my cancer treatment?
Whether you have just been diagnosed, are in active treatment, or have completed treatment we encourage you to attend programs at CSC Atlanta.
Is parking available?
Free parking is available at our facility. In addition, we are conveniently located
adjacent to the Medical MARTA station.
Do I need to bring anything to exercise/stress reduction classes?
No. We have all of the equipment necessary. Just wear comfortable clothing.

About Us
New Member Orientation
The Cancer Support Community Atlanta is a warm, inviting place
where people affected by cancer can participate in free quality
programs of support and education to guide them through their
diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. We are the Atlanta affiliate of
a national organization that is acclaimed for our professionally led
programs. All programs are evidence based and empower people to
face cancer armed with vital information, a network of supportive
friends who understand their journey, and a healthy spirit to face
what will lie ahead.
If you are new to the community, we require that you attend a New
Member Orientation meeting. These meetings are open to adults
with cancer and their family and friends. There will be a tour and
overview of the entire program. Mondays at 10am;
Thursdays at 6pm. RSVP.
Our home-like facility is centrally located in metro Atlanta and
includes rooms for a variety of support groups, large studio rooms
for gentle exercise and stress reduction classes, a resource library, a
classroom, and a demonstration kitchen for nutrition programs. In
addition, our classroom is also open to the public for educational
forums featuring some of our area’s most acclaimed physicians and
specialists in the fields of medicine, nutrition, and breakthroughs in
oncology treatments.

Cancer Transitions is a free 3 hour, six-week long, series designed to
help cancer survivors make the transition from active treatment to
post-treatment care. It is specifically for people who have completed
their cancer treatments at least two weeks prior to the start of the
program and are no more than two years post-treatment.This series
requires a phone interview prior to registration.

About Us
The Cancer Support Community Atlanta is a warm, inviting
place where people affected by cancer can participate in free
quality programs of support and education to guide them
through their diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. We are the
Atlanta affiliate of a national organization that is acclaimed
for our professionally led programs. All programs are
evidence based and empower people to face cancer armed
with vital information, a network of supportive friends who
understand their journey, and a healthy spirit to face what
will lie ahead.

Support:
If you are new to the community, we require that you attend
a New Member Orientation meeting. These meetings are
open to adults with cancer and their family and friends.
There will be a tour and overview of the entire program.
