Canyon Hills Presbyterian Church March 2015 Important Dates Is it “one step forward and two steps back” or “two steps forward and one step back”? It makes a difference when we are talking about progress. We often hear people use this phrase when describing something that seems frustrating or even sometimes promising but is not making the progress they had hoped. If someone takes one step forward and two steps back they are really not making forward progress at all, they are actually falling further behind whatever it is they are facing. But when you take two steps forward and then just one step back you have made progress, but it might just be slow progress. I don’t think there is anything wrong with taking a step back every once in a while. Sometimes in life we forge ahead too quickly without accessing the dangers or pitfalls that lie ahead so either we take a step back or become vulnerable in peril. Sometimes we get out of the gate quickly only to find the path we are on is a dead-end or filled with obstacles. It is often wise to take a step back and gain a broader view of where we want to be and how we are going to get there. Taking a step back gives us perspective, allows time for reflection and evaluation, turns failures into learning opportunities and lets us catch our breath. After Moses led the Israelites into freedom from Egypt they spent 40 years wandering in the desert because they were not yet ready for the Promised Land. This must have felt like they had made a giant step backward and yet they were making progress forward. God’s greatest desire was to usher in his people to their promised land, a place to call home, but following their escape from slavery they proved themselves unready to receive such a grand inheritance. So, they had to take a step back into the desert and gain some perspective, maturity, spiritual growth and be made ready by the challenges of the desert to appreciate their future. As we enter the church season of Lent, it might feel like a step back from the glory of the Christmas season and the promise of hope and joy and peace, but we too need our time in the desert to gain perspective, spiritual maturity and to be made ready for what lies ahead. Throughout Lent we are encouraged to take time to reflect, evaluate our circumstances, learn from our failures and gear up for the future. We are encouraged as followers of Christ not to lose heart but instead to strengthen our hearts and our souls with dedicated prayer, the shedding of excess and generous giving for the sake of others. During Lent we are making forward progress to the Cross of Christ – a place where the crucifixion could be construed as a failure of a movement and yet is was the exact step back needed to provide for the glorious resurrection and the explosion of faith that followed. There is purpose in the season of Lent, there is much to experience and gain from our traditions and spiritual exercises. During Lent our worship will guide us through ways we can give up excess and indifference, take up challenges and lift up those who are hurting and offer healing so that we might look up to the cross and experience the resurrection in new and powerful ways. Our faithful congregation, our worshipping community has been called into an exciting future that has begun to manifest itself in our desire to take the gospel to those who are in need and to discover the needs of those close to home and on the fringes of our communities. Collectively we possess the gifts necessary to fulfill our call, to turn dreams and visions into reality and to step into the future of Canyon Hills Presbyterian Church. Over the course of the next several weeks there will continue to be ways for you to be part of this Lenten experience of reflection and faith building. One Great Hour of Sharing Fish Banks can encourage our giving, the Lenten Study series beginning on March 11 can encourage our spiritual growth, our Sunday Morning worship can encourage our prayer and devotion, our Mexico Mission encourages service, and our Holy Week observations including Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday can encourage our dedication. You are invited to observe a Holy Lent in however you feel led by the grace of God. You are encouraged to take that step back into the desert for a time of reflection and inspiration so that God might shape you and give you strength and courage for what might come and so we might become together faithful followers of Christ who offers hope and mercy and love to those who are in need. Lissa Godsend Members in the News (more bios next month) Hi I’m Craig Coy and I’m proud to say that I am the Director of CHPC’s contemporary Christian Rock Band, Godsend. What an honor to lead worship with this group of tremendously talented musicians. We have a nice blend of young and old (I am the old one). Joan, my wife of almost 43 years and I have been members of CHPC since 1982. Before Godsend, I enjoyed singing with the Chancel Choir for 27 years. The music programs in our church are a very important part of our lives. I am a Pediatric Dentist by vocation and have had the privilege of treating many of the children of our church. Now, I’m treating their children too! I’m also a huge football fan of my alma mater, U.S.C., in case you didn’t know. Joan and I have three wonderful daughters; Kelly Morgan, Courtney Amaya, and Chelsey Coy Knight. The oldest, Kelly, sings in Godsend with me. What a joy. I always love singing with my daughters. I am a happy man. We have been blessed also with four incredible grandchildren; Miranda – 13, Corinne -10, Maxwell – 7, and Kayla— almost 4. We truly care about all of our wonderful friends here at CHPC. All of you are part of our family in Christ, Blessings Craig Roger Behle lives in Yorba Linda with his wife, Denise, and their three children. His oldest daughter, Marlee, is a junior at Yorba Linda High School. His middle daughter, Claire, attends Travis Ranch Middle School, and his youngest, Roger (whom he affectionately calls “Rog-o”) is in 4th grade at Bryant Ranch. Roger and his family have attended CHPC for more than 15 years. All of their children were baptized at the church. Roger is not one to boast, but when it comes to Roger’s musical accomplishments his wife (your author) is certainly willing to speak up on his behalf. Before Roger became a father and a lawyer, he played lead guitar for gold record artist, “Stacey Q.” The single, “Two of Hearts” reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Charts in the 80’s. During this time Roger appeared several times on American Bandstand with Dick Clark, MTV and all of the major television networks. He also performed live in concert and around the country. Since the end of Roger’s “professional” music career, he has enjoyed playing with Godsend at CHPC and has particularly enjoyed mentoring the young musicians of the church. When he is not lawyering, fathering, husbanding, or playing guitar, Roger enjoys competing in marathons and triathlons. Roger is a 5-time Boston Marathon finisher and a 4-time Ironman Triathlon finisher. Most importantly, however, Roger is a great husband and father. Thanks, Jef Schleiger—Facilities Elder CHPC Activities Women’s Book Group We are reading another terrific book by one of our favorite authors, Kristin Hannah. Home Front is a “profoundly honest look at a modern marriage and a dramatic exploration of the toll war takes on an ordinary American Family…a story of love, loss, heroism, honor, and, ultimately, hope.” “A heart-wrenching portrayal of one veteran’s trials points out how much training goes into preparing for war – and how little is done to teach returning soldiers how to be parents again.” (People magazine). Please join our group on Tuesday, March 24, at the home of Mary Douglas. We meet at 7:00 p.m. and all women are always invited. Call Mary Douglas for more information. (714-281-1472). Easter Lilies Each year, for our Easter Worship celebration, lilies decorate our sanctuary as a reminder of the new life brought forward by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If you would like to contribute to our Easter Lily fund, please do so by indicating on the registration form on Sunday mornings along with your check of $9 per plant. You can also mail or drop by the church office with your request. The deadline is Sunday, March 29th at noon. Joyful Noise www.canyonhillspc.org 6 March 2015 YOUTH MINISTRIES Middle School Winter Camp: Snowmageddon 4 Our middle schooler’s joined over 90 others for a weekend in Big Bear at our Winter Camp, Snowmageddon 4! Although finding snow was a bit of a challenge in these summer-like conditions, our kids were able to snowboard and sled for a few hours on Saturday. The speaker for the weekend, Joe Barsha, spoke with great passion about our freedom to make choices that encourage us and lead us closer to Jesus Christ. Our students were able to spend time in “Pod Groups” with other middle schooler’s discussing the difficulties that come with making daily choices to follow Jesus. This year, we had the opportunity to join with Tustin Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church Orange to carpool and share activities. It was great meeting other middle schooler’s from our sister churches! On Saturday afternoon, Bill and Leslie Berger hosted our group for some swimming, cotton candy, and games. It was a great way for the kids to spend some unstructured time together in fellowship. Everyone had a wonderful time at Winter Camp. Thanks so much to Alan Smith, Carter Smith, and Cameron Underwood for being awesome counselors at camp! And thank you for your support and prayers for us during the weekend! Confirmation Begins in April! Confirmation is a wonderful opportunity to have fun and learn how to live out our faith. All senior high students are welcome to join. Confirmation is a unique opportunity to ask hard faith questions and work through them with friends and caring adults. We are all in this together! About Confirmation During our time together, students make informed and personal decisions toward confirming the promises of their baptism, professing their faith, and claiming their Christian identity. This process helps students not only understand the basic principles, beliefs, and doctrines of the reformed tradition and Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but also helps them work through the question: “Where do I fit into all of this?” Through their fellowship and studies, our hope is that students and their families build, strengthen and nurture their relationship with God as well as relationships within their family, their peers and church family. Confirmation classes begin Sunday, April 12 and meet from 11:30am-1:00pm. Classes continue 4/12, 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, and 5/17. Students will meet with Session on 5/19 and be confirmed in worship on 5/31. For more information, or to register, please contact Staci Ashby at [email protected] or (949) 613-2616. Join us for a night of inspiring worship with Chris Tomin! Saturday, April 18th at Verizon Amphitheater in Irvine. Meet at the church at 5:00pm. Tickets are $25. Contact Staci Ashby ([email protected]) for more information, or to reserve your ticket! Joyful Noise www.canyonhillspc.org 7 March 2015 Volunteers in blue t-shirts offer their time and talents to rebuild communities impacted by disaster. Immigrants and refugees gain access to land that allows them to grow food and feed their families. Women who have experienced abuse work together to make changes in the social systems that have oppressed them. What do these stories have in common? Hope—because God’s love is demonstrated through the generosity of gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS). By God’s grace, each day is a gift, an opportunity for a new beginning. Through abundant and generous gifts to OGHS, for many years Presbyterians have faithfully heeded God’s call to serve people seeking to reclaim and restore their lives. Your gift to OGHS is a gift of hope. Your gift allows Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to restore communities around the world affected by natural and human-caused disasters. Your generosity helps the Presbyterian Hunger Program work with Presbyterians and other partners to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in this country and internationally. Your sharing makes it possible for Self-Development of People to affirm the dignity of all by assisting in the empowerment of economically poor, oppressed, and disadvantaged people. Joyful Noise As a result of your gifts and the gifts of other congregations across the church, OGHS will continue to be a reminder that through the simple act of sharing, we are blessed and experience God’s abundance in surprising ways. Last week during worship our children and parishioners were given iconic “fish banks” as part of our One Great Hour of Sharing program. These fish banks represent to many generations of worthy and sacrificial gifts that have directly impacted lives around the world. Fish banks and other resources will be available in the church office and at the connect table throughout the season of Lent as we share our combined gifts for the work of the larger church in the name of Jesus Christ. To learn more about the One Great Hour of Sharing click onto our church web site here or you can click directly to the OGHS special offering page. Palm Sunday is the traditional time we collect fish banks donations and other gifts as part of our offering but you may give at any time during the next few weeks of Lent. www.canyonhillspc.org 8 March 2015 Presbyterian Women PW would like to say "THANK YOU" to our congregation for the amazing job you have done donating items for the KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF mission campaign. We are happy to report that we collected over 630 pairs of socks for the men and women of Mercy House and for the children of Anaheim's Boys and Girls Club. In addition to socks, we also collected underwear in excess of 288 for men, women and children along with some miscellaneous items like scarves, etc.Pat yourselves on the back for such a great job! We are so grateful for all your support! On Saturday, May 2nd PW is hosting its annual Celebration Spring Luncheon at the Alta Vista Country Club in Placentia. We will be sending invitations out and ALL women of the church are invited to attend. Our guest speaker this year is from MOMS Orange County. The mission of MOMS Orange County is to help mothers and their families have healthy babies by providing health coordination, education and access to community services. We are inviting the congregation to help us collect baby items (a flyer and list of items will be provided in April) to help this wonderful organization. It's so rewarding giving back to our community! As always, if you have not joined a PW Circle and would like to please contact Mary Douglas 714 2811472 or myself 714 974-6982.
