FROM MSGR. RICHTER
Friends of the Cathedral,
In the Eucharistic Adoration chapel we change
the background canvases according to season in
order to assist in drawing us into the presence
of Jesus. For the season of Easter, the canvas
is Caravaggio’s Incredulity of St. Thomas. In
it, Caravaggio captures the scene from John
20:26-28. According to St John’s Gospel, the Apostle Thomas
missed one of Christ’s appearances to the Apostles after His
resurrection. When told by the other apostles that Jesus had
risen, Thomas promptly announced that, unless he could
thrust his hand into Christ’s side, he would not believe what
he had been told. “A week later his disciples were again in the
house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were
shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be
with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and
see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do
not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and
my God!” - Jn. 20:26-28.
Caravaggio has Jesus grasping the hand of the apostle
Thomas and thrusting it deep within the wound at his side,
powerfully aligning Jesus’ and St. Thomas’ hands to form a
lance. St. Thomas’ face expresses profound surprise as his
finger thrusts deep into Jesus’ wound. Perhaps, the surprise
has to do with his unbelief. It could also be surprise at the
realization that he, too, is also pierced. Indeed, St. Thomas
appears to clutch his side as if he becomes aware of a wound
at his side as well. And we who wince at this gritty depiction
feel a wound at our side as well.” (Aponte, 104)
It is my hope that this beautiful piece of art helps draw us
into the concreteness of the Risen Christ and increases our
desire to meet and touch Him, as did the imperfect St. Thomas.
May the presence of the Risen Christ warm your heart with his
peace!

Lighthouse CD of the Week:
Seven Last Sayings of Christ - Spoken as
He suffered the agony of the cross, the
seven last sayings of Christ recorded
in the gospels have been the subject
of prayer and inquiry by Christians for
two thousand years. In this revealing
presentation, Dr. Scott Hahn unlocks
for us the deeper significance of Our
Lord’s last words, carefully chosen so that we might better
understand the immense love of God for every person and
His plan of salvation. Learn how Jesus’ words are as profound
and gripping today as when He uttered them on that first
Good Friday. Check the Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosk in the
gathering space for this and other titles.
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
I write today to express my gratitude for your generous
response to our 26th Annual African Mission Appeal
which was held in our parishes on March 7th and 8th.
Your wonderful generosity demonstrates your
spiritual unity with Pope Francis’ strong pastoral
dedication to the poor.
The money collected for the African Mission Appeal
supports our missionary activity in Kisii, Kenya, East
Africa. You can be very proud of all the missionary
work that we are able to accomplish because of your
generosity. On behalf of our poor brothers and sisters
and all the orphaned children whom you have helped, I
offer my heartfelt thank you.
I hope you get a chance to read about the exciting
ministry that Brent and Jessica Naslund and their
family are accomplishing because of your support in the
quarterly issues of the Kenya Connection newsletter. They
are full of interesting articles describing the wonderful
work and ministry made possible by your contributions.
More information can also be found on our diocesan
website and the African Mission Facebook page.
Once again, I thank each and every one of you who
supported our African Mission Appeal. You are faithful
and generous stewards.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend David D. Kagan
