Newsletter No. 13 – 14th May 2015
Dear Parents
Classroom Parent Representatives
Your classroom needs you!! Each classroom is
looking for a parent to act as its classroom
representative (rep). It is a rewarding role that helps
with teacher/parent communication. Classroom
parent reps will meet once a term with the school
admin to discuss any matters relating to their role.
Please speak to your child`s classroom teacher or at
the school admin office if you would like more
information regarding the role.
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program - Literacy and
Numeracy (NAPLAN) was carried out with our Year
3 & 5 students on Tues 12th, Wed. 13th and Thurs.
14th May. All schools across Australia must complete
the tests on the same days. Our NAPLAN
assessments were administered by our classroom
teachers and took place in the student's classrooms.
The Year 3 & 5 students were assessed in Reading,
Writing, Punctuation and Grammar, Spelling and
Mathematics. The children will receive their 2015
NAPLAN reports in Term 3 and the school will
notify parents when this information becomes
available. NAPLAN testing assist teachers in
identifying children who are at Educational risk and
the school results will be considered when we as a
staff are planning for the future. Semester One
reports will be distributed at the end of this term and
will provide an evaluation of a student’s progress in
regards to academic and social development.

P & C Fundraising
The P & C last night provided additional funding for
a number of school activities. $43,000.00 was
provided for replacement ICT equipment for
classrooms, for new Reading Materials and various
other items. Thank you to our hard working P&C.
School Uniform
Along with wearing House shirts each Friday, Years
1 - 6 students may also choose to wear our school
sports shorts sold by our uniform shop. Please also be
aware that only flesh coloured stockings may be
worn by our girls. As the weather becomes cooler our
bottle green scarves are a great way for both girls and
boys to stay warm. Further information about correct
school uniform is available on our school website.
Tomorrow's assembly will also feature a short
'fashion parade' showing examples of correct school
attire.
Board Meeting Minutes
As of March 17th, the ratified minutes from Board
meetings are now available on our school website.
Dogs on school grounds
I understand that dogs are loved and valued members
of some of our school community families, however
due to school policy, could I please ask dog owners
to not bring them onto the school grounds.
Contact Details Update
Please advise the office if you have any new land
line phone numbers or mobile numbers, as these need
to be kept current for our student information sheets

Como Dads’ Night with the
“Fathering Project Presentation”
Wed 17th June 2015
6.45pm to 8.30pm
Venue – Como Primary School Hall
Cost - $10 (for information booklet and Tea/Coffee)
Pay at the door
RSVP – 10 June 2015 (for catering Purposes) via
email [email protected]
Come along and socialise with the other Dads from
Como Primary. The Fathering Project will conduct
this interactive, informative evening for all the
fathers and father figures (Uncles, Grandparents,
Friends) to meet, talk, share and support each other in
trying to be the best dad possible. So ask those
involved in your children’s lives to come along.
When someone asks, “What is the most important
thing in your life?”
The answer 99% of the time is, “My family”. The
benefits of effective fathers are profound. The
presence of an effective father, or father figure, is an
important influence on a child’s life. Mums generally
do a great job as do some dads. However some dads
need to get more involved to be really effective so
come along and get some great tips. Everyone “wins”
- dads, wives/partners, kids, school & the community.
“It’s completely changed my life, my outlook. I’m
happier in my life. I can’t thank The Fathering
Project enough. It has completely changed my life for
the better and I will be forever grateful to The
Fathering Project.” Luke – electrician and father of 3
boys.
Lost Property
Could parents please ensure that they label all items
used by their children at school. There are a number of
items in the lost property basket which are unlabelled
and therefore cannot be returned to their owners. A
number of parents have reported that they are missing
labelled items of apparel. Please take the time to check
all items of clothing being used by your child to ensure
that items belonging to another child have not been
inadvertently taken. Any items not belonging to your
child should be placed in the lost property bin.

Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD)
This is an annual, national event when all Primary
School children will be encouraged to walk and
commute safely to school. It is a Community Event
seeking to promote Road Safety,
Health, Public Transport and the
Environment, held throughout
Australia on Friday 22 May 2015.
The objectives of WSTSD are:
 To encourage parents and carers
to walk to school with primary
school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian
behaviour.
 To promote the health benefits of walking and help
create regular walking habits at an early age.
 To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an
adult's hand when crossing the road.
 To help children develop the vital road-crossing
skills they will need as they become mature
pedestrians.
 To reduce the car dependency habits that are being
created at an early age and which will be difficult to
change as children become adults. To promote the
use of Public Transport.
 To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor
vehicles.
To reduce the level of traffic congestion. Thanks Erica
Schurmann, President P&C
P&C Meeting
An update from last night’s meeting (Wednesday 13th
May) will be provided in next week’s newsletter.
Como Cookout News
I would like to thank all
staff, children and
parents for making this
past week another
successful one! Our
“Thursday Special” this week was Polony Hash or
Beef and Gravy Roll, both seem to be a hit. We have
added Thursday Specials to our online ordering and
that will make it a bit easier. Please keep in mind,
whether ordering online or through the sheet sent
home, all Thursday Special orders must be in by the
latest, on the Wednesday morning before, as it keeps
wastage down and makes the ordering by the canteen,
a lot easier. One other note for Thursdays is that we
will NOT be open for recess, it is LUNCH only on
Thursdays. Our weekly give-aways have been a great
hit and has been good encouragement for our
children to make healthy choices when choosing their
lunch. Again we will keep with the theme, for the
next few weeks, if you buy a green menu lunch item
(PP1, PP@ and Kindy not included) you will receive
a raffle ticket stapled to your lunch bag and at 12:30
on Wednesdays and Fridays, we will give away two
ice-cream or hot chocolate tokens and a $5.00
Canteen Cash voucher. So far it’s been a lot of fun!!
I would like to also thank our volunteers who have
made the canteen thrive and move along smoothly.
However, if anyone cannot make a shift, please let
me know ASAP and I will find a replacement. All
changes to do with the Roster must come through me,
as I am the one who makes necessary changes when
and where needed. Your cooperation is appreciated.
HAPPY ORDERING!!! Tanya Hopper Canteen
