Principal’s Message
Welcome back. I trust you had enjoyable break and are suitably
revived and ready for the challenges Term 2 will bring. Of
course, the first challenge for our Year 3 and 5 students is
NAPLAN testing, which will begin on Tuesday of Week 4. Those
of you with children in these year groups will appreciate the
stress that NAPLAN can cause, with many students feeling
pressure to do well. It is important to remember that NAPLAN
tests give us a snapshot of achievement in literacy and
numeracy at one particular point in time. The results are viewed
in the context of school based assessments and ongoing
classroom achievement. Class teachers have thoroughly
prepared students for these tests and their only expectation
now is that the students try their very best on each paper. We
ask that you support us in this, reminding your children that
applying their best effort on each day is worthy of celebration.
A big thank you to all who wore blue and donated to the ‘Go
Blue For Autism’ day last term. We raised $870 in total.
Farewell to Ms Caroline Booth
It is with great fondness and sadness we would like to farewell
Ms Caroline Booth, Deputy Principal. Ms Booth has been merit
selected to Mullaloo Heights Primary School as Principal. We
are thrilled for her, and would like to congratulate her, as she
leaves us to take on her appointment and pursue new
challenges at Mullaloo Heights PS. The Butler PS Community
would like to thank her for all the hard work and fine
achievements she has contributed over the past ten years at
Butler PS. She has made many valuable contributions within the
classroom, as a class teacher and specialist Literacy teacher.
She has mentored many new teachers and worked tirelessly to
lift standards in Literacy across the school, particularly in the
middle and upper years. She has done an outstanding job as
Deputy Principal and Acting Principal in recent years and will be
missed by the whole school community. Congratulations, Ms
Booth. We wish you all the best for the future.
Assembly Magic
Mrs Morris’ and Mrs Woodard’s class assembly was an epic
in the true sense of the word. They gave a comprehensive
account of the causes and impact of bushfires. The assembly
was both entertaining and informative. Clearly, the students in
these classes thoroughly enjoyed researching this topic.

ANZAC Ceremony
Last Friday’s ANZAC ceremony allowed us to reflect upon the
sacrifice made by the men and women who served in World
War 1 and subsequent conflicts. Anzac Day goes beyond the
anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day
on which we remember Australians who served and died in
all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of
Anzac, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and
sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our
sense of national identity. It was an incredibly moving tribute;
the choir sang, our guest speakers, Mr Travis Zommer and Mr
Tom Burke, shared their war experiences and thoughts and
Mr Burke played the bagpipes. The ceremony concluded with
the unveiling of the PEACE wall. This wall represents hours of
collaboration from our students, who, under our Art Specialist
Miss Cox’s direction, carefully selected and created
components that symbolised the ANZAC spirit. The wall will be
an ongoing representation of the ANZAC legend and a reminder
1
of the cost of the freedoms we have today. A big THANK
YOU to Mr Adlam, Mr Williams, Ms Galton-Fenzi and Ms Cox
for all their hard work in organising the Anzac Ceremony. The
choir, led by Ms Jurgowiak, sang beautifully. Our Head Boy,
Charlie Thomas, and Head Girl, Ashleigh Hislop, hosted the
event professionally and respectfully. It was a special event that
will be remembered for many years to come by those that
attended.

It’s that time of the year again so put on your royal robe
and come take a stroll through our Book Fair Kingdom. The
Scholastic Book Fair will be held for three days from Tuesday
26th May to Thursday 28th May 2015. This is an annual
event for the Library. It gives both parents and children the
opportunity to purchase books at very reasonable prices. The
Book Fair will be open from 8:30am to 3:30pm and after the
2nd bell at lunchtime, on each of the 3 days. Parents are
welcome before or after school and all day Thursday. We hope
to see you in our Book Fair Kingdom where all Readers of the
Round Table are welcome.
St John First Aid for Butler School Staff
Many of our enthusiastic staff gave up their leisurely Saturday to
attend a St John First Aid course recently at Joondalup Health
campus. The title of the course was Provide an Emergency
First Aid Response in an Education and Care Setting.
The day was a fun-filled success with our would-be paramedics
sharing their day with the rest of staff this week. Conversation
around the tables in our staffroom were all about how to deal
with choking, calling ambulances, using infection control
procedures, applying first aid management, Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation, Anaphylaxis and asthma.
All who attended were pleased with their improved confidence
and knowledge of First Aid practices and would like to thank
our generous P&C for paying for the course. This initiative was
put in place to make our school even safer for our students and
follows on from the St John First Aid Focus incursions that all
classes participated in last year.
As mentioned in our last newsletter of Term 1, we are starting a
Breakfast Club at Butler PS.
Our first Breakfast Club will be held on Friday of Week 3 (8th
May).
Where: PP 9
When: 8 – 8 30am
Who: Year 5 & 6 Students (and siblings of these
students).
Come and join us for a yummy breakfast and great company.
Hope to see you there!
Before I sign off, I would like to say a BIG Thank You to a very
special lady and wish her all the BEST!!!
Goodbye Caroline, I hope to see you soon xxx
Kind Regards,
Mrs Hunter

Welcome back Families to Term 2
News from the Canteen!!!
With the oncoming of winter, our menu has changed to
incorporate warm and wholesome foods.
Our recess items change daily and will be including warm Milo
and warm custard with fruit plus all our favourites, hash browns,
jelly cups, homemade muffins, cookies and pizza slice!!
With the children loving some of our recess items, I have
decided to do some lunch specials, including pizza (homemade
of course) meatball and chicken parmy subs!!!! Due to catering
to a student body of 900+ I am breaking the special lunch days
into year groups 6-5, 4-3, 2-1. As you can imagine, these days
can be absolutely hectic to get 300+ lunches out on my own
(we still need volunteers).
Thank you for supporting the canteen's new on-line option, I will
always take lunch orders at the canteen. The on-line option is
2
for ordering only, we still make ALL the foods in the canteen,
and it is not out sourced.
All our foods offered and served are SCHOOL APPROVED
following the strict guidelines set out by the West Australia
Canteen Association; we use the traffic light system of
green foods daily amber foods occasionally and NEVER
red food groups (fried/sugary).
The P and C of Butler Primary is proud to be able to offer and
operate a Canteen at our school, offering a valuable service in
supporting our families, by giving them the option of ordering
delicious and healthy lunches and snack. We can also cater to
some dietary needs such as Gluten free or vegetarian. For more
information or any questions, please pop into the canteen and
if you have a free half hour come in and volunteer for a wee bit!
Warm Regards
Mrs Shelly Siakia
