Map Orientation by compass
Magnetic Azimuth
A magnetic azimuth of any object is the compass reading of a direct
line across the center of the compass to the object.
How to take an azimuth reading of an object
with a Lensatic Compass
1) Face object
2) Open lid halfway to 90 degrees
3) Lift the lens arm to approximately 45 degrees
4) Place compass with lens towards your eye
5) Angle lens so that you can read the degree numbers closest
to the hinge through it
6) Align object with wire in compass lid and the slot above the lens
7) Read degree scale through lens without moving compass
8) That is the objects azimuth
LID
Finding your position on a Topographical
map
1) Take azimuth bearings (see instructions below) on two
separate points visible on both the terrain and map
2) Then orient the map to North (See instructions below)
3) Make the first point on the map and draw a line according to
the angle of it’s azimuth bearing. Repeat this step for the
second point
4) Where the two points intersect is your present position
LENS
1) Lay the map down on a flat and level surface
2) Align the North indicating line on the map with the magnetic
North of the compass
3) The map is now oriented to magnetic North
Walking in darkness, dense fog
or rough terrain
On the surface of the bezel are two lines at a 45° angle from
each other. One line is short and the other is long. These lines
are for quick walking through rough terrain.
1) Turn the compass to face North,
2) Rotate the luminous line on the bezel to the desired
degree of travel
3) Travel in desired direction
4) Take a quick reading at any time by facing North and then
adjust your traveling direction as indicated by the line
