CALL TO CONFERENCE - Altrusa International, Inc.

CALL TO CONFERENCE
20151
Join your District Six friends in northern Illinois for Conference this year! Plans
have been made for fun, workshops, business and socializing all at the Timber
Creek Inn & Conference Center in Sandwich IL. Renew friendships with Altrusans
from across District Six and make new friends. We all have room in our lives for
one or two more friends, don’t we?
Altrusans from DeKalb-Sycamore have planned a wonderful weekend at Timber Creek. Our entertainment
Friday night will feature the Northern Illinois University Steel Band, the first active steel band formed at an
American university. Weather permitting we’ll be outside on the terrace for their performance. Saturday
night we’ll be treated by jazz guitarist Fareed Haque, NIU professor of jazz and classical guitar after years of
touring with artists like Sting and David Sanborn. Both these performances will be special.
Saturday night we’ll install your newly elected District Six Board of officers who will lead us through the next
biennium under the leadership of incoming Governor Chris DeVlieger. DeKalb-Sycamore Altrusans want to
get Chris off to a great start as Governor and will host a reception after the banquet. Come join all District Six
Altrusans wishing our leaders well.
District First Vice Governor Dana Vierck and District Director Sue Creighton are planning an inspiring AllConference on Leadership: Serving at all Altrusa Levels for Sunday morning. Sunday morning we’ll also
remember those Altrusans who have died in the past year. This memorial service is always a thoughtful
reminder of those who gave many years of service to making their communities a better place through
Altrusa.
International Director Carol Latham will be with us for the weekend. Don’t hesitate to approach her with
questions or concerns for the International Board of Directors. We’ll also have the opportunity to learn more
about the International website from Association Manager Sandy Jablonski, an Altrusan from Pennsylvania
recently relocated to the International office in Chicago.
If your club has questions on incorporating or changing your club name, come Friday afternoon to the
Conversation Café to get them answered. We’re also asking clubs to share information about their favorite
service project or fundraising ideas.
So, come join me, the District Six Board of Directors and Committee Chairs in Sandwich in April!
Linda Barb
District Six Governor
-WELCOME!Altrusa International of DeKalb-Sycamore welcomes you to DeKalb County, and we look forward to your
participation in the 59th Annual District Six Conference April 17-19, 2015.
Timber Creek Inn and Suites, located in Sandwich, Illinois, is a modern, spacious facility with many
amenities, including a 24 hour fitness center, internet access, fully equipped sleeping rooms (tv,
refrigerator, microwave and coffeemaker) and a heated indoor pool. There is even a terrific outdoor patio
to enjoy if the weather is good.
The conference program developed by Governor Linda Barb and the District Six Board provides you with an
opportunity to participate in the business of the District, share ideas, showcase successful projects and
fundraisers, develop new friendships and renew old ones.
The workshops will offer something for everyone: personal growth, leadership, fundraising, membership,
officer responsibilities, flower arranging, and information we've labeled "Starting THE Conversation,
developing end of life plans."
On Friday night enjoy the picnic fare as you listen and dance to Caribbean music by the NIU Steel Band.
Saturday evening, enjoy a lovely dinner followed by Installation of Officers and the international flare of
world renowned guitarist Fareed Haque.
While you're here, take some time to visit the town of Sandwich, Illinois on Friday morning. Shop, have
some lunch and tour the Sandwich Opera House, a charming little "antique" theater with a surprise in the
ladies room.
Our service projects are chosen to provide needed help for the most vulnerable among us, that of the
elderly population and local animal shelters. Details can be found later in this publication.
Come to Conference! We'll be expecting you!

International
Service
Development Chairman and International Director (2005-2007), International

3300 Drew Avenue
Sandwich, Il 60548
Tel. 630-273-6000 Fax 630-273-6100/Timbercreekinnandsuites.com
You will need to make your own room reservations. Registering for the Conference DOES NOT reserve a
room for you.
A block of 100 rooms has been reserved. Room rate is $94.99 per night (plus 9% occupancy tax).
Room blocks will be released March 17, 2015.
These are comfortably appointed guest rooms with several amenities.
Elsewhere in the hotel is a heated swimming pool, fitness center, restaurant, and a bar.
Upon entering the hotel, you are on the main floor. Room check/out is on your left as you enter the
building and Conference registration will be on your right.
*** THE "DESIGN YOUR OWN TOUR" ***
After you've registered and settled into your room, you may have time to explore the
small charming town of Sandwich, Illinois, a short ten minute drive from your hotel.
Built in 1878, the City Hall of Sandwich with its Opera House reflects the mixture of
revival styles of the post-Civil War era and is a distinguished example of the "Second
Empire" style. The spirit of the early years after that war broke apart pure styles and
mingled and transformed structures into the eclectic architectures of this building.
It was one of the early buildings in the expanding Midwest which proved to be a
complete community center, including local government and the law enforcement
and court system. The second floor became the Opera House. The Opera House
included shows by traveling troupes with everything from vaudeville to Shakespeare.
Today the Opera House continues to provide a setting for the performing arts. It's a
pretty little jewel box of a place.
The tour guide is there from 8 a.m. daily, and will give a spontaneous tour and is
exceptionally well-versed (30 years’ experience!). This tour takes about an hour. The
cost is a donation.
While you're there, don't forget to take a walk through the downtown to visit the
antique and decorating shops bordering the center park/railroad area - perhaps you
will find just the right thing to take home for yourself or a friend.
Consider stopping for lunch at several nearby restaurants, including the "Bull Moose
Train Car",
which was part of Teddy Roosevelt's train during his presidential
campaign. It's a unique and historic place, but certainly not the only good place for
lunch.
Another unique opportunity is a Civil War encampment at the park northeast of
downtown on Friday. (Our source tells us there may be school groups participating.)
Candidates for Office
Governor-Elect
Dana Vierck, Altrusa International of Elgin
I have several goals as Governor-Elect --- to focus on our core issues - recruitment of new
members and membership retention, and Altrusa visibility in the public.
I also would like to engage and inspire our members to invest in leadership development, so
all members have the tools to serve in leadership capacities at all levels of Altrusa.
Dana joined Altrusa International, of Elgin, IL in 2001. She served and chaired several
committees and held various board positions including Club President in 2007-2008, and Elgin
Foundation President in 2013-2014. Her Altrusa District Six service includes Service Chair, B-R-R
Chair, 2nd Vice-Governor, and 1st Vice-Governor for 2013-15. Dana also has served Altrusa
International, Inc. on the International Leadership Development Committee in 2009-2011 and
International Service Program Development Committee during 2011-13.
First Vice Governor
Becky Ray, Altrusa International of Lexington
District Six: Second Vice Governor (2013-2015) Secretary (2011 - 2013)
Altrusa International of Lexington, KY, Inc.: Co-President for two years (2009 & 2010),
Foundation Treasurer (2008-2009), Co-Chair Membership (2007 - 2008), Co-Chair Communications
(2006-2007), Member (2006– present), Lexington Club’s Joyce Delabar Award (2010), District
Conference Co-Chair 2011.
Becky is actively involved with local non-profit organizations and is presently serving as
Treasurer of the Lexington Citizens Police Academy. She serves as a greeter in church and
participates in a Bridge Club, Bible Study and Book Club.
Becky has been married to her husband, Marc, for 36 years. They have one son Brandon (34
years). Brandon & his wife Jessica blessed them with twin granddaughters, Madeline and Caroline
(4 years).
With several clubs disbanding this past year we need to focus on increasing membership and
retaining the great members we already have.
Second Vice Governor
Jan Fritz, Altrusa International of Quincy
Jan graduated from Western Illinois University in 1973 with her Bachelor’s degree in Education
and from Southwest Baptist University in 1998 with her Master’s degree. She has retired from AT&T in
2002 and from Thrivent Financial in 2013. Joining Altrusa in 1978 until 1986, leaving due to family
obligations, Jan served as corresponding secretary. In 2003, Jan rejoined Altrusa and was sponsored by
a member she originally sponsored. Jan has been Vice President and is currently Club President. She
has been involved in service projects and fund raising. She served as District Six Conference Co-Chair in
2010. She’d like to serve the whole district and meet many more Altrusans.
Director
Becky Mercier, Altrusa International of Lexington
Invited to join Altrusa in 2005, it has been one of the best “joining” decisions I ever made. I have had the
privilege to serve in many capacities in the Lexington Club: Director; Secretary; District Conference Co-chair 2011;
Communications, Scholarship, Service, Nominating, Finance and Membership Committees; FOCUS Editor; and CoPresident.
I retired from County Social Services after 27 years. I have served in the Police Department and taught
criminal justice courses. My volunteer activities include work with the Council on Accreditation for Children and
Families, Sweet Blessings, church and the Bluegrass Mustang Club.
I have a blended family of 3 daughters, one son, 6 grandchildren, 2 golden retrievers and one sassy black
cat named “Gracie.”
Treasurer
I would be honored to serve on the District Six Board and am committed to the philosophy of
unselfishness, the joy of giving rather than getting.
Sue Whitaker, Altrusa International of Muncie IN
Sue has been a member of the Altrusa International of Muncie, IN, Inc. since 1988. She has
served her club as President, Past President, President-elect, Vice President, and Corresponding
Secretary. She has chaired a number of the club’s committees and is currently serving as chair of
the club’s ASTRA committee. In addition she has served four terms on the Muncie Altrusa
Foundation, Inc. Board and is the current secretary. She has chaired the Altrusa Style Show, the
club’s major fund raising project and as well as serving for two years as the Underwriting Chair. For
District Six she is currently serving as the Secretary and previously has served as treasurer. She has
attended a number of District Conferences and three International Conventions. Sue’s past service
as District Six Treasurer provides her the experience to carry out the duties of treasurer. She found
Altrusa to be a vital organization
in her professional
and wishes
to continue to serve and give

*** SERVICE PROJECTS ***
This year we are pleased to offer two service projects for you choose from. You are welcome to support one or both
of these service projects.
DEKALB COUNTY REHAB AND NURSING CENTER is a 190 bed facility dedicated to the care of the elderly and infirm
for both long and short term stays. It also contains an Alzheimer's Unit. The majority of the facility's residents are
Medicaid eligible. The Center is not supported by any local taxes or county funds.
The Administrator has provided us with a list of residents' needs as follows:
 Clothing (can even be GENTLY used), in sizes L, XL and XXL. Items suggested are diabetic socks, men's tshirts, men's cotton flannel shirts, women's short and long sleeve "undershirts", like Cuddle Duds, Men's and
women's lightweight cardigan sweaters (fleece), soft and comfy slippers.
 NEW underwear.
 Nail polish, remover, fast dry spray, emery boards and makeup.
 Large print books and magazines.
 Writing materials, greeting cards, stationery and stamps.
 Bingo prizes, such as small bottles of lotion, perfume, gently used fashion scarves,
men's caps, costume
jewelry, pins, etc.
 Inexpensive fast food restaurant gift cards (they give them to their children and grandchildren for birthdays
or Christmas.)
 Anything Altrusans would buy for their own elderly relatives and friends.
The DEKALB-SYCAMORE AREA is home to several ANIMAL SHELTERS dedicated to the care of homeless and abused
animals. The shelters are self-supporting and rely on individual contributions for a large portion of their supplies.
Shelter staff suggest the following on-going needs:
 Good quality dry and canned food for both young and adult cats and dogs.*
 Paper towels.
 Liquid hand soap and liquid laundry soap.
 Water and food bowls.
 Toys, leashes, collars, combs, and brushes.
 Petco and Petsmart gift cards.
 And, in general anything Altrusans can think of that they would purchase for their own pets.
*Good quality means that the first ingredient is meat and that there are no added dyes. This is particularly important for stressed animals. If
you choose to bring bags of dog or cat food, please bring smaller bags. The great big bags are too hard to handle. Thanks!
Altrusa District Six Silent Auction
A Silent Auction to benefit Altrusa International Foundation, Inc. will be held during the
Conference. You are invited to participate by donating an item with a suggest value of $25
or more. Perhaps you can bring an item which represents your community or some bling to
share!
Any donation is appreciated. Help make this year’s Silent Auction the best ever. Please
notify Evelina Cichy if you are bringing an item so that sufficient space is available.
Swap-n-Shop
District Conference provides a great opportunity for clubs to display and sell fundraising
items, or perhaps you have a great raffle item to share. Please notify Eveline Cichy if your
club plans to participate. Also indicate whether you will need a full 8 foot table, or half a
table.
Exhibits and Displays
Does your club have a great service project or fundraiser that you want to share with other
clubs? Often times, the best project ideas come from other clubs. Maybe you have a club
newsletter or yearbook which would be of interest to other members. Bring a poster(s)
about your club’s fundraisers or service projects, newsletters, yearbooks, publicity, etc. to
Conference. Please let Evelina Cichy know if you are bringing any items to Conference so we
can make sure to have enough space for everyone’s displays.
If your club would like to participate in any or all of the activities above,
contact Evelina Cichy by April 3, 2015.
