Teen Wilderness
Expedition trip planned
PISCATAQUIS - The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD) is partnering with the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) for their Teen Wilderness Expedition trip. They are
looking for youth ages 12-16 who want to join as they explore the
mountains, hillsides, lakes, rivers and forests of the North Maine
Woods. This trip will take place from Wednesday, July 15 through
Friday, July 17. On this trip, youth will spend 3 days and 2 nights
at Little Lyford Lodge, owned and operated by AMC. At the Lodge,
District staff and AMC’s Piscataquis Education Coordinator, Dawna
Blackstone, will provide opportunities for youth to enjoy a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities, all while learning about the natural resources surrounding them and the importance of conservation.
Activities for the Teen Wilderness Expedition trip will include
kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hiking, swimming, trail walks, camp fires
and much more. They will spend their days with local experts that
will provide demonstrations and presentations about native fish species, Maine wildlife and even a natured-themed watercolor painting
lesson.
In addition to these fun activities and presentations, youth attending the Teen Wilderness Expedition trip will also enjoy accommodations in the guest cabins at Little Lyford Lodge, delicious food, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, and be surrounded by the
friendly lodge staff and the beautiful scenery.
“Last year, the PCSWCD held our first annual trip to Little Lyford
Lodge and the youth that joined us on the trip had a blast,” said a
PCSWCD representative, “Little Lyford offers a unique North Woods
setting, perfect for making lifelong, summertime memories with
friends and soaking up the natural beauty surrounding us.”
“The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District
works in our community to educate residents on how to protect and
conserve our natural resources,” the representative continued, “Over
the years and through our partnership with AMC, we have offered
this trip as a hands-on learning experience to do just that. Through
educational efforts such as our Teen Wilderness Expedition, the PCSWCD has engaged many youth to get out and explore our natural
world and has inspired future generations of environmental stewards.”

31 at 2 p.m.
Piscataquis County is officially on the Camden International Film
Festival’s Aging in Maine tour schedule this year. For information

The Piscataquis Thriving in Place Collaborative is sponsoring the
May 31 screening and has selected four films that address issues
fundamental to aging, including driving, independence, and dementia care. With so much media concentration on the demographics
of aging, the economic impact of caregiving, and the prevalence of
age-related conditions, the actual experiences of older people may be
overlooked. These documentary films reveal the poignant personal
struggles and opportunities that come with growing older.

Center Theatre Drama Camp dates announced
DOVER-FOXCROFT - The
Center Theatre announces the
dates for the 2015 Center Theatre Drama Camp. The two session dates are June 29-July 10,
and July 13-24. Camp runs 9
a.m. - 1 p.m. Monday-Friday, with
a final performance at 6 p.m. at
the Center Theatre on the final
Friday of each session.
The oldest of all Center Theatre programs, Drama Camp has
been running every summer for
almost two decades. All classes
are held at the East Sangerville
Grange, which has been a sponsor of the Camp since its inception. Numerous local children
and summer residents have attended the camp, many attending
multiple years in a row.
Classes are open to all children from kindergarten through
9th grade, and the wide range of
ages provides unique educational moments and opportunities
for growth for all students. The
Camp staff also includes high
school interns, many of who have
attended the program through
much of their childhood.
The goal for Drama Camp is
to immerse children in many ex-
citing aspects of theater: team
building, improvisation, theater
games, exercises, music and
dance. The belief that creativity
and cooperation are as important
as the final production keeps
Camp centered on learning, interaction and fun.

Big changes to Y Sprint Triathlon
DOVER-FOXCROFT - The Piscataquis Regional YMCA is hosting
their annual Sprint Triathlon on the morning of Saturday, August 8,
But according to the Y, there will be quite a few changes to this year’s
race. The first difference is the race date itself, says Patrick Myers,
the Y’s Race Coordinator, “There are so many great races and events
in July that is was getting difficult to find a date that didn’t cause
conflicts, so we decided to move the race to August.” The Y hopes that
this will encourage more people to take part in the race which has
seen attendance dropping slightly over the past few years.
The Y is also making other changes to the event in hopes of attracting new participants. “Many people are interested in biking and running, but aren’t so excited about the swim portion of the Triathlon,”
Myers said. “To bring them into the event we are not only shortening
the swimming leg from ½ mile to ¼ mile, but we are also going to offer a new Duathlon event that only includes the Biking and Running
events.” The Triathlon will start with the ¼ mile swim in Sebec Lake
at the Public Beach, then both events will follow the same 12-mile
bike route from the public beach, to the Peaks-Kenny entrance and
then into Dover-Foxcroft. The 5k run portion of both events will end
at the YMCA.
Registration is now open for both events for both teams and individuals. Medals will be awarded for top finishers in separate age and
gender divisions. Each racer will receive a t-shirt and goody bag and
after the race there will be a celebration and awards ceremony at the
Y as well as music and food for all participants and spectators.
Registration is open right up till the morning of the event, but Myers suggests people get registered before July 3rd to take advantage
of the early-bird discount. People can register at the Y or by visiting www.prymca.org. Anyone wanting more information about the
triathlon can call the Y at 564-7111 or stop in at 48 Park Street in
Dover-Foxcroft.

DOVER-FOXCROFT - The Center Theatre recently announced
that they will be holding a benefit concert to support the relief efforts in Nepal. The concert will take place Saturday, May 24 at 2pm
with admission by donation. The idea for the concert came from Lou
Harper with the Dexter Brass who is working to assemble a slate of
acts for the event. Currently on the program along with Dexter Brass
are the renowned folk duo Castlebay.
Castlebay started in 1987, performing and promoting the music of
Maine and the Celtic lands of Scotland and Ireland. Castlebay regularly tours throughout the eastern US performing at arts centers, festivals, folk clubs, schools, and libraries. They have toured the United
Kingdom annually since 1993. They have collaborated with performers there on several CDs and also composed music for a major work
presented at the Celtic Connections Festival, Glasgow, Scotland, in
2001.
The Dexter Brass are a well-known community band that performs
often throughout the year at events and concerts. Lou Harper, who
plays in the band, is also recruiting other groups to take part in the
concert. Updates can be found on the Center Theatre’s website www.
centertheatre.org and the Theatre’s FaceBook page. Advance tickets
can be purchased at the Center Theatre Box office during regular
business hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Hartland Academy Reunion

reunion of the graduates and
attendees of Hartland Academy.
The last graduating class of Hartland Academy was in 1968 and
reunions have been held in fiveyear intervals since.

JANET ALMA RINES
DEXTER - Janet Alma Rines,
90, passed away peacefully on
May 2, 2015 at Togus Springs
Hospice Unit in Augusta, ME,
with her daughter, Judy, by
her side. Janet was born on
February 18, 1925 at home
in Athens, ME where she was
welcomed by her parents,
Amos E., Jr. and Beatrice
M. (Trueworthy) Rines. Orphaned at the age of 12, she
lived at Goodwill Hinckley
until her graduation in 1942.
She received her nursing degree from Sisters of Charity
Hospital in Waterville in 1946.
Soon after, she enlisted in the
Army, and after completing
basic training at Fort Sam
Houston in San Antonio, was
transferred to the Air Force.
She served as a charge nurse
at Wheelus Field Air Base in
Tripoli, Libya and was commissioned as Captain before
being honorably discharged.
Her nursing career continued
at the Fairview Hospital in
Skowhegan before she became
Dexter’s Public Health nurse
and School nurse, positions
she held for nearly thirty five
years. She is fondly remembered in the greater Dexter
community for her compassion and her servant heart.
Before retiring in 1994, she
also worked at Mayo Regional
Hospital in DoverFoxcroft.
She was the first recipient of
Jan Rines R.N. lived in
Dexter for more than sixty
years and served as Dexter’s
Public Health Nurse for over
thirty years. She also served,
for a time, as Dexter’s School
Nurse.
Jan’s nursing career in Dexter began before Medicare
and Medicaid were instituted.
She identified the needs of
pregnant women, the newborn, the children of the community, the men and women
who had unmet health and
social needs, and the elderly.
Jan’s formal nursing education along with her servant
spirit met the needs of the
people in Dexter and surrounding communities.
Jan worked in collaboration with the State’s Division
of Public Health and was respected by her professional
colleagues.
A tribute to Jan was written by one of her colleagues
the Bachelor of University
Studies degree from the University of Maine in 1976. Jan
was a 60-year member of the
Dexter First Baptist Church,
serving as a Deaconess, youth
group leader, Sunday school
teacher and member of the
Flower Committee. She was
also active in the Sunshine
Club, Dexter Women’s Literary Club, American Legion,
Dexter Public Health Association, Salvation Army, RN
Guild, and served as an incorporator of the Plummer
Associates and Silver Lake
Housing. She enjoyed reading, knitting and gardening,
especially enjoying her flowers. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by
her brothers, Gordon (Todd),
Philip and Waldo Rines; and
her sisters, Winnifred Crocker
and Maxine Lothrop. She is
survived by her daughter and
son-in-law, Judy and Mark
Johnston of Manchester, ME
and her granddaughter, Elizabeth Johnston of Augusta,
ME as well as many nieces
and nephews (and ‘greats’)
who were very special to her.
The family wishes to thank
her good friends for their frequent calls, notes and visits.
Also a heartfelt thank you
to the doctors, nurses, volunteers and ancillary staff at
Togus Springs Hospice Unit
for the exceptional care and
respect given to her as well
as to her family and friends
during her final months. They
truly are angels on earth! In

DEXTER & GLENDALE,
ARIZONA – Steven P. Wark, 54,
passed away May 11th, 2015 at
his home in Arizona, surrounded
by his loving family. Steve was
born May 5th, 1961 in Dexter,
graduating from Dexter Regional High School, Class of 1979.
Shortly thereafter, he joined
the United States Air Force and
served his country proudly as an
air traffic controller “WK” for 20
years. Following his retirement
from the USAF, he continued
his successful career as a civilian controller with the Department of Defense in Phoenix,
Arizona. He married his high
school sweetheart in 1981 and
together they raised two wonderful daughters. Steve lived a rich
and wonderful life. He is loved
and respected by all who were
fortunate enough to have known
him. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife Darlene (Huntley); daughters Jessica and Michelle; brother Jeff
and his wife Cathy of Clermont,
FL; brother Scott and his wife
Anne of Groveland, FL; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces,
and nephews across the U.S. and
U.K. He was predeceased by his
parents Stanley and Jean (Burrows) Wark. A graveside service
with military honors was held
May 21st at the Mt. Pleasant
Cemetery in Dexter. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal, Dexter.

Club celebrated its 79th year recently with a Birthday Party at
The Lakehouse Restaurant in
Monson. Eighteen members and
one associate enjoyed a social
hour. The tables were decorated
with potted pansies for each
member.
While waiting for dinner to be
served, Barb Austin conducted
a few games. The first one was
“What is In Your Purse?”. She
had a list of items women carry
in their purses and we had to
see if we had them. Suzanne
Raymond was the winner. Then
each member told what their
nicknames were and how we
got them.
Then she showed
photos of members when they
were young and we had to guess
who they were. It was a difficult
game but fun.
A delicious dinner was enjoyed
by all with desserts of brownie
sundae or berry cobbler.

Senior Matters:
“Thrive in Place”

DOVER-FOXCROFT - In my last column I identified some of the basic elements required for an older
adult to “Thrive in Place”. This includes having safety and security, discussed briefly in the previous column, maintenance of good health, support from friends, family and community, and connectedness. In
this column I will discuss maintenance of good health.
Very broadly, this involves both the medical community and the person and family working together to
maximize health which will allow a person to age at home without institutionalization or illness. In our
area there are many outpatient medical providers who are now available to supervise a person’s health
care.
Ideally, every older adult will identify a medical professional who knows them and evaluates their
health regularly. Under Medicare many practices are organizing under the new concept of “Medical
Home” which supports a wide range of services to keep a person well including a nurse navigator for
people with multiple chronic illnesses, social workers to assist with care planning and counseling when
needed, and medical assistants who can assist with screening, immunizations, lab tests etc. An older
adult may be asked to come to the office for an “Annual Wellness Visit” in which medications (including
over the counter medications) are reviewed for safety and appropriateness, all screening and immunization recommendations will be discussed as well as advice on healthy lifestyles, screening for falls, depression and dementia, counseling regarding advance directives, and referrals if needed. This visit will not
include a full exam, but is a very important way of the PCP office to get to know you and work with you to
develop a care plan. By doing this annually a practice will get to know your needs and your progress as
you age and will pick up on problems before they become severe. For example if your balance is getting a
little off this can be identified and exercises or PT evaluation may be recommended.
Additionally, individuals and their families should be alert to the personal responsibilities that come

behaviors such as standing on stools in the kitchen, taking lots of over the counter medications, or driving
inattentiveness. Mainers are very independent and while I generally look at this as a strength, sometimes this leads to unrealistic assessments of one’s ability as they age. Unfortunately, this can lead to a
crisis (such as a fall or broken bone) which could have been avoided if the person just sought assistance
in the early stage of the problem (such as PT for balance training, or enrollment in a yoga class or senior
exercise program).
Getting older has many rewards including freedom from work responsibilities, enjoyment of grandchildren without the responsibility of a parent, and freedom to “sleep in” in the morning. But in order
to enjoy ones older years it is essential to maintain best health possible. If you are interested in finding

Last Monday I had the dubious pleasure of attending a Public
Hearing before the Environment & Natural Resources Joint Legislative Committee. While the purpose of the hearing was to find out
what people thought about how the metal mining industry should be
regulated, it seemed as if the legislators were not that interested in
what regular people had to say. Our representatives seem willing to
hand over the regulation of the mining to the very corporations who
are doing the mining. While people gave impassioned testimony of the
environmental damage that mining was likely to do, the legislators
asked questions that seem to indicate they were only deciding how
much damage they would allow. One of these legislators (these are
people elected by us!) actually said that since there’s already arsenic
pollution in the Bald Mountain area due to the minerals found in the
rocks, what difference does it make if we add a whole lot more arsenic
(plus some cadmium, lead and whatever else might be there) by pulverizing the rocks to extract the minerals we want.
Right now the mining industry is limited by regulations enacted in
1991. What the Committee seeks to do is create new rules, designed
to invite more mining to Maine, to extract our resources and theoretically provide a few temporary jobs. Are we a third world state? It was
pointed out that these new regulations would apply to all of the state.

Recently, I attended a Tea Party meeting where a young man, S/Sgt Travis Mills, was the guest speaker.

Travis is retired from the 82nd Airborne division where he was a jump master. At 25, Travis left his wife
Cambridge
and 4-month-old daughter for his third deployment in Iraq. In Iraq, shortly after his arrival on April 10th,
2012, he had the misfortune of stepping on an IAD which turned his right leg and right arm into powder.
He also later lost both his left leg and lower left arm.
Travis is only one of five quadruple amputees to survive this conflict. In spite of suffering this horrific
loss, this young man on his prosthetic legs and with a prosthetic left arm gave an incredibly inspiring
talk with a smiling countenance and a very engaging personality. At no time during his presentation was
there indication that he looked for sympathy; instead his countenance exhibited strength both in faith
and character. His motto is Never Give Up – Never Quit. His goal is to give and help other veterans to
adjust to life again after suffering serious injuries.
He has initiated The Travis Mills Foundation Retreat in Rome &
Mt Vernon, Maine to provide a venue for disabled veterans and their
families to spend time together and reestablish their lives. This program is provided at no cost to these veterans. The facility was the
former Maine Chance Lodge formerly owned by cosmetic pioneer,
Elizabeth Arden. To upgrade the facility for this proposed usage will
cost an estimated $2.2 million and efforts have currently raised approximately $300,000. I ask that you consider giving thoughtful and
careful consideration to supporting this project. For additional information, please contact:

Dead River donates to Tri-County
DEXTER – As part of it’s ongoing commitment to educating youth in the communities in
which it serves, Dead River Company is donating a Class B oil delivery truck to Tri-County Technical Center (TCTC). The truck will
be used to train students enrolled
in the Commercial Truck Driving
program.
Dead River Company decided
to donate the truck after Safety
Manager Mark Anderson attended a conference addressing
the shortage of commercial truck
drivers in Maine. Dead River
Company also plans to donate
another truck to the school, in the
near future.
According to the Maine Department of Transportation,
more than 84% of Maine communities depend on trucks to move
their goods, yet currently there is
a shortage of 20,000 drivers per
year. “The statistics just shocked
me”, says Anderson. “There’s a
big need out there and a lot of
jobs to be had for trained drivers.
I thought this was a great opportunity for us to step up and provide equipment to students with
a passion for this kind of work,
so they can succeed and get good

one of only four technical centers
in the state of Maine to offer both
Class A and Class B licensing options. Currently 20 high school
students and 5 adult education
learners are enrolled in TCTC’s
program.
“Not every driver wants to become Class A and drive the big
rigs,” says Vicki Kimball, the
Commercial Driving Instructor
at Tri-County Technical Center.
“Offering Class B instruction for
high school and for adult education students, opens up opportunities that translate into jobs.
The donation of this vehicle is
huge for us and we are excited
that Dead River is planning
on donating another one to the
school. Now we have the tools to
teach, and this training directly
corresponds to jobs.”
This isn’t the first time Dead
River Company has made this
type of donation. Beginning in
2011, the company made a multiyear, 11-vehicle commitment to
The Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges with a goal of
enhancing the hands-on learning
opportunities at the state’s community colleges. This $100,000
commitment of equipment was
used in various operation and
maintenance programs at community colleges throughout the
state.
