Orange launches Device Sales Barometer


Increasing interest in device bestseller lists from customers and media alike

The bestsellers in Q4 2013: Apple iPhone 5s and Samsung P5220 Galaxy Tab 3
From today, new quarterly publication of the bestselling devices via Orange’s own points
of sale
“More and more customers, media representatives, and market observers are asking us what the topselling devices are in our Orange Centers and Orange Points. The new Orange Device Sales
Barometer is aimed at addressing this need, while also contributing to market transparency. We are
therefore now going to publish quarterly rankings for sales of mobile phones and tablets. We will thus
be highlighting the trends in the market, showing which devices are gaining in popularity among
customers and which are falling from favour: You want to know which devices are the bestsellers at
Orange? – You bet you can,” said Matthias Hilpert, Chief Commercial Officer at Orange, commenting
on the reasons behind this new publication.
iPhone 5s and Samsung P5220 Galaxy Tab 3 top sellers in Christmas shopping season
For mobile communication devices, the Christmas shopping season is the most important period of
the year in terms of sales. The bestselling smartphone at Orange Centers was the Apple iPhone 5s,
followed by the Samsung Galaxy S IV I9505 and the Apple iPhone 4s.

Matthias Hilpert sees the reasons for the Apple iPhone 5s securing top spot as being the customers'
preference for Apple: “Switzerland has long been an Apple country, and this is also borne out by our
sales figures.” But Samsung’s devices are close on its heels, and it remains to be seen how long the
iPhone will be able to stay out in front. All in all, more than 90% of the PostPay smartphones sold by
Orange are 4G/LTE-capable.
The bestsellers in the PrePay market were the Nokia Asha 206, the Nokia 113 and the Samsung
Galaxy Ace. Smartphones now also account for half of all the PrePay mobile devices sold. With the
Huawei Ascend G526 LTE, the fourth generation of mobile phone communications 4G has now also
arrived among the top-selling devices in the PrePay segment.

The Samsung P5220 Galaxy Tab 3 proved the most popular at Orange's own sales outlets. Thanks to
its attractive price-performance ratio and Orange's market-leading Duo Pack offers, the Galaxy Tab 3
was the top seller in the Christmas sales period.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z enjoyed immediate success, coming in between the two top dogs Samsung
and Apple, shooting into second place and thus beating the Apple iPad Mini 16 GB.
All of the tablets sold by Orange are 4G/LTE-capable and 60% of all the tablets sold use Android as
their operating system. Orange offers the biggest selection of tablets of all the mobile providers.
Furthermore, 60% of all tablets sold by Orange are sold as a cut-price deal in the attractive Duo Packs
together with a smartphone. Tablet devices are thus affordable for virtually everyone. With its Duo
Packs, Orange is 'democratising' tablet devices: “Smartphones and tablets are now used more
frequently for surfing, social media, apps, e-mail, etc. than PCs and laptops. We therefore don’t want
to save at the customers’ expense here, and offer people who want discounted devices virtually the
cheapest prices in the market,” stresses Matthias Hilpert.
