ADULT COURSE (0.6 CEUS)
3-PART COURSE (1.2 CEUS)
After many years of clinical research and development
Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson has created a program using
tactile interventions to improve the oral preparatory
phase feeding skills and speech clarity for teens, young
adults and the geriatric population. In this one day class
participants will learn how to diagnose and treat musclebased deficits for their clients with any of the following
diagnoses: dysarthria, apraxia, post oral cancer surgery,
voice disorders, post CVA, Parkinson’s disease as well as
Down syndrome, TBI and Cerebral Palsy. The hands-on
practicum will include innovative “therapy tools” that can
be used by therapists, patients or caregivers to improve
feeding skill including chewing of firmer textures, bolus
formation and bolus positioning for transport. Muscle
skills can improve at any age and this class will add both
new and exciting activities to your therapy repertoire.
Come, learn, have fun and enjoy the successes! Before
and after videos will demonstrate the effectiveness of
Oral Placement Therapy.
TalkTools’ innovative tactile-sensory approach
to speech therapy uses therapy tools to train and
transition muscle movements for speech production.
Learn how 40 highly motivating motor activities can
be used to improve phonation, resonation, and speech
clarity. Interactive, hands-on demonstrations will
focus on therapeutically sound techniques to develop
oral-motor movements for improved speech clarity.
Muscles of the abdomen, velum, jaw, lips, and tongue
will be discussed within the parameters of movements
necessary for speech production. Developmentally
appropriate motor movements for speech are
therapeutically targeted using highly motivating
techniques appropriate for children and adults.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
• Appropriately assess oral placement/feeding/speech
problems based on muscle systems.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
• Integrate hierarchies for motor dissociation and grading
(jaw-lips-tongue).
• Use non-food items to improve the sensory-motor
skills needed to chew and swallow safely prior to
introducing new food textures
• Plan programs of therapeutic intervention to address
physiological and motor-based speech disorders.
• Appropriately apply at least 10 new therapy techniques.
• Appropriately apply at least 5 new therapy techniques
• Learn to use oral placement techniques to improve
individual speech clarity and production.
• Learn to use Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) techniques
as a tactile cueing system in conjunction with
traditional speech therapy to improve speech clarity
• Describe how therapeutic straw drinking can be used
with and without liquids to improve feeding safety and
speech clarity
TALKTOOLS is approved by the American Occupational
Therapy Association (AOTA) to provide continuing education
activities in occupational therapy. The 2-day programs are
offered for 1.2 CEUs, while 1-day programs are offered for
0.6 CEUs. The assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply
endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical
procedures by AOTA.
Courses offered for up to 1.2 CEUS (2-Day) (1-Day). (Intermediate
level, Professional area).
