Dr. Issam Amr Carbon Management Division, Research & Development Center, Saudi Aramco Reducing CO2 Emissions from Buildings Abstract: Conventional buildings consume a lot of energy and hence, the energy consumption in residential sector represents around 15% of global energy consumption. As energy comes mainly from burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), this energy consumption is associated with high CO2 emissions which is one of the major greenhouse gases leading to climate change. Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil producer, has initiated various projects to manage carbon emissions from different sectors. This presentation will talk about some of Saudi Aramco projects for green buildings. A 10.5 megawatt solar power system was designed to meet the total power demand of Al-Midra Tower. Another project is for energy savings in homes and offices by implementation of different energy conservation methods such as replacing incandescent lamps with LED lamps, home insulation and HVAC equipment replacement with higher energy efficiency equipment. In addition to those initiatives, Research and Development Center initiate a basic research project with Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) for enhancement of CO2 utilization and storage in cement and concrete materials to reduce CO2 emissions and improve the quality of construction materials. Biography: Dr. Issam Amr joined Saudi Aramco in 2012 as a lab scientist in Research and Development. He is a member of Mobile CO2 Management team under Carbon Management Division. His research focused on the new sorbent development for CO2 emissions reduction and simulation of CO2 absorption and adsorption Processes. Issam holds a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM). He had two patents and many journal and conference publications. Before joining Saudi Aramco he works in academia as lecture at in chemical engineering department at KFUPM and he was assistant professor in chemical engineering department at King Faisal University.
