All of the planning and preparations are being finalized and the last step, EXECUTION is almost here. I would hope that all TCA members have already registered for the Car Show, signed up to attend the Friday Night Dinner/Dance and the Sunday Hill Country Run. We also need everyone to volunteer to work on one of the Car Show Committees, the Parking Crew could still use a bit more staffing. The last thing we really need to make this year’s Car Show the best ever is a great sunny weekend. All positive thoughts in this area are greatly appreciated. I hope to see everyone at all of these fun Car Show events. Wednesday, night April 2, we had a TCA ALL event at the San Antonio Raceway. The weather that evening was perfect for racing. Six TCA members entered their cars in this Drag Racing event and we had 12 members in the grandstands cheering on the drivers. Ken Reeves was the trophy winner…Congratulations On Sunday, April 6, we attended the Relay for Life Car Show at Womack Chevrolet in Castroville. The morning started out with some rain, which caused less than expected attendance. However, several TCA members braved the weather and we had three Corvettes on display from Les Hobgood, Wayne Eason and Jerry Hendley and all three cars won Awards. The Raffle Truck was also on display and ticket sales were headed up by the Team Pisano group. A big Thank You to everyone that attended this show. The TCA ALL event for May will be a trip to the Lone Star Corvette Club Car Show in Fort Worth at the Texas Motor Speedway May 15-17. The Lone Star Car Club has committed to register 32 cars for our April 26 Car Show. We currently have 8 TCA cars registered for their Car Show. There is still time to register for this fun weekend so let’s return the support they have shown for our Car Show. The CEO for this event is Paulette Petron. Please contact her to register. The Texas Corvette Association is your club and the best way to get the maximum enjoyment out of your membership is through PARTICIPATION in our events. So come out and get involved and have some fun, drive your Corvette and meet some new friends. Our members make the TCA the best club in Texas. The general meeting on May 6, will be the first time we get to hear a recap of how successful our Car Show turned out. Please come to the meeting. Y/O was originally the property of the legendary Charles Schreiner, a Civil War Captain who staked his claim to over 500,000 acres of virgin ranch land northwest of Kerrville and built an empire of real estate, banking and department stores around this city. Today, the Ranch is principally a preserve for thousands of exotic animals of 50 different species and a haven for hunters who can test their skills over a 29,000 acre expanse. Some of these animals are endangered or nearly extinct in their native environments, and Y/O has become known as the rescuers of a number of species, returning valuable specimens to their former home countries. TCA members had the privilege of viewing some of the Ranch’s acreage and getting up-close and personal with a number of these beautiful animals. Of special interest were some spiral-horned Kudus, emus and ostriches, a handsome pair of zebras, and a beautiful giraffe family. In charge of our tour was the very warm and hospitable Debbie Hagebusch, Director of Tourism and Wildlife at Y/O, who has made the care and breeding of the animals her career for over a decade. Debbie drove us around (in a giraffe-painted bus) for the 1 ½-hour viewing and introduced us to some of her “pet” species. (One of the dama gazelles, named Sahara, loved to chase after our bus and cadge cookies. There was an ostrich (nicknamed “Junior”) that sat down on command to get his neck scratched, and the mama giraffe, named Carlita, had learned to gently fetch cookies that we held in our teeth. See photos attached.) After the tour, we all sat down in the rustic Chuckwagon dining room for some brisket and sausage BBQ, with a sauce that puts most commercial restaurants to shame. Enjoying together this great experience were: Rick/Cheri Creekmore; Dan/Debbie Leimbach; Rick/Chris Lindner; Noel Osborn/Carolyn Brandes; Lou/Maureen Pisano; and Paul/Renee Reed. 8 Dan & Debbie Leimbach; Rick & Cheri Creekmore; Lou & Maureen Pisano; Chris & Rick Lindner; Carolyn Brandes & Noel Osborn (co-CEOs); Paul & Renee Read. 9 Debbie strikes a similar pose w/ Paul & Renee’s new C7. 10 The TCA Cars @ Y/O. 11 Noel & Carolyn @ the “Giraffe bus”, Dan at the rear. 12 Toby the zebra. I love racing, and I want current information on race schedules, drivers, and track facts. Lucky for me, and you, there are some really great racing apps available and easy to access. Here are some of my favorite "LET'S GO RACING" apps ! IMSA APP - IMSA stands for International Motor Sports Association and is the sanctioning body for sports car racing. While attending the 12 Hours of Sebring, I found the app to be great in keeping me up-to-date with all the details of the action. This is the official IMSA mobile app, and it features live timing and scoring during every TUDOR United Sports Car Championship and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race weekend. This is a free app. FORMULA ONE APP - Now that we are having the Formula 1 race at the Circuit of the Americas, you will want to keep up with the teams throughout the season. This is the official Formula 1 app and is available for a free download. 21 NASCAR MOBILE APP - Are you a NASCAR fan? If so, you will like this app. This is for the 2014 season and is designed to bring information directly to your phone or pad. You can follow news, highlights, stats and much more. This is a free app. INDYCAR 14 APP - Don't just watch the race, feel it with INDYCAR 14. This app has a lot of great features to make you feel like you are at the track with the action. This is a free app. NHRA Mobile - This is will allow you to follow your favorite NHRA drives as they compete for this year's championship. Free app. Send me your favorite APPs to be shared and included in future editions of THE APP CORNER. "Save the Wave….Don't Save Your Vette…….Drive it!!!!" All Dan Martin’s Cars…. And some of them are actually his….! Most TCA members know Dan Martin, aka the head of TARGA (Technical and Restoration Group Activities); also ex-president of TCA (2002 and 2003); owner and operator of Hill Country Vettes; and spouse of Pat Martin, TCA’s Arch-duchess of Haderdashery. Dan and Pat routinely involve TCA members in their very well-planned rallies and road events. Dan grew up hanging around the Corvette Assembly Plant in St. Louis, where his uncle was an employee on the assembly line. His knowledge of, especially, C1, C2, and C3 models is extensive and proven over a lifetime of repairing and rebuilding these Corvettes. In testimony of this, Dan was recently recognized by the NCRS (National Corvette Restorers’ Society) as a Master Judge, the first TCA member ever to gain this recognition. Dan and Pat own a total of 6 Corvettes themselves: a ’54 roadster, ’61 convertible, ’63 (split-window) coupe, ’65 coupe, ’66 (big-block) convertible, and a 2010 Grand Sport coupe (NCM delivery). However, “ Dan’s Cars” are far more extensive than these and include a large number of Corvettes that have been restored, rebuilt, or extensively repaired, and which belong to the following lengthy list of TCA members : Glenn Cook, ’66; Rick Creekmore, ’64; Zale Pletcher, ’66 big-block; Ron Grimwood, ’63 fuelie; Les Hobgood, ’60 roadster (his dream car); Mark Horner, ’65; Bob Howell, ’64; Bernie Jensen, ’61, John Lickvar, ’66; Paul Mery ,’66; Brad Mitchell, ’67; and Jim Reed, ’63 split-window. Dan’s loyal clients also include Noel Osborn, the original owner of a pristine ’67 convertible that has garnered more national awards than most cars in the TCA fold: Bloomington Survivor and Gold, NCRS Top Flights (4), Performance Verification, Star Award (1 star for original interior), and the vaunted 22 Duntov Mark of Excellence Award. Noel recently added to the ‘67’s portfolio the Vette Vues “Tri-Power” Award, a new distinction for Corvettes already holding Bloomington Gold and Duntov status and achieving a score of at least 95 (of 100 points) for condition and originality at one of the 2 Vette Vues expos held each year. Noel credits Dan with keeping his car in show status and excellent running condition over the last few years. “I won’t let anyone in San Antonio but Dan touch my car,” he says. Dan Martin is one of those rare people who not only love Corvettes but also help other people love and enjoy theirs. Congratulations, Dan! You can also email Rosa directly at [email protected]. Rosa's surgery on Wednesday unfortunately didn't accomplish all that was planned as the doctor was unable to complete the disk repair or fusion. Due to a nerve blocking access to the path for the repair of the L3 & L4 disk, Rosa will have to return for a second surgery on Tuesday, April 15th. While she has been moving around, she continues to experience pain from the first surgery. Rosa thanks everyone for well wishes they are much appreciated. In addition to Rosa, please also keep Ron Lang and TJ Hobbs in your thoughts and prayers. Ron is still undergoing tests, with the next one scheduled this week; and TJ will undergo hip replacement later this month, on the 28th. We continue to look for better ways to keep everyone updated in a timely manner, and will work toward changing our venue to utilize http://www.caringbridge.org/ to keep everyone updated with the status of our members.
