“Equipping one another to serve here and everywhere.” This is the third bullet point of the mission statement of the church of my youth. This concise summation has had a great impact in my life. Equipping is to be specific to our particular location of time and space-- 31 E. Vine St. Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Yet it is so much more than that. This address is but a slice of the ministry that takes place during the week. The purpose of the church is to equip Christ's disciples to serve everywhere. As you go about your daily chores and appointments you minister to people all the time. We are connected as a church to so many other Christian communities of faith. I wanted to highlight several examples of this in my article this month. As a community we want to prepare the church to serve locally and globally. Four youth from this church, and I will be going in July to San Diego to participate in a Week of Hope. Along with us will be additional youth from this Presbytery as well as people from other churches around the United States. Please pray for all aspects of this trip. Group Mission trips coordinates the event which strives to accomplish the following: Teenagers will learn Christ-like empathy and compassion for others as they meet the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of disadvantaged children, youth, and adults. As students serve in the name of Jesus, they’ll develop friendships with the people being served, with teenagers on other teams, with members of their own youth group, and, most importantly, with Jesus. Denominational differences disappear as like-minded youth work together for a common purpose. It’s awesome to watch!” Closer to home, in June, our church will have the delightful opportunity to support and host a PC (USA) missionary couple that serves in the middle east. We will hear of God's amazing work in places where the body of Christ is ministering to displaced and persecuted peoples. On June 9th at 5 p.m., we will join together with the couple that coordinated the trip which Kathi and Ellen went on last summer. We will fellowship with an early meal and a presentation to hear how we can be praying for that region and for these wonderful church personnel. We also continue to grow into our relationship with RESTORE, a local non-profit. RESTORE will be offering a leadership camp for two weeks in June. They will once again use our facilities as a base for the camp. Keep this exciting and meaningful ministry in your thoughts and prayers. As a reminder, middle school and high school students are eligible to participate. Contact the church office or RESTORE for more information. The dates are June 8-19. We are so thankful to God to have our very own dynamic duo, Cheryl and Doug Hunt back again with us having returned as “Presbyterian Accompaniers” in Colombia. They are so helpful at drawing our attention to the wider church. Pray for German and all the church in Colombia. Wherever your summer may take you remember that God is with you always. Be the church where you are. Congratulations are in order! We have launched our first community garden in partnership with Restore. Those participating from First Pres include Gus, Ali, Craig Holmes, Delilah Mason, Destiny Akins, Jim and Gretchen Louden, Maurice McElhinney, Bill and Autumn Alessio and Doug and Cheryl Hunt. What's been planted? Black turtle beans, yellow corn, okra, arugula, jalapeño peppers, basil, tomatoes (Nano, San Marzano, Sun Sugar, Jelly Bean), Shishito peppers, banana wax peppers, pimento peppers, Ichiban eggplants and Bush French Filet green beans! Sounds great doesn't it? FPC veggies are in the following planters. Row 1: pink, green, and blue. Row 2: pink and green. The rest of the beds are planted by Restore. There is a drip system providing water, but everyone is responsible for their own weeding, staking, cultivating, etc. Is the produce shared? Once things start to ripen, those who have planted/maintained an area can designate with a stake(s) which plants and veggies can be picked and enjoyed by anyone. If a plant or row is not designated, the produce is only for the person maintaining it. A person may designate a particular plant, a row, or part of a row as being available to all. Thin bamboo stakes with painted tips will be used to identify those plants or rows whose produce is available. We are hoping the program will be so successful and the harvest so bountiful that everyone will be able to partake. We want to remember the lives of members Ray Hartwig and Bill Morrow who went home with the Lord this month. They will be missed, but not forgotten. L y r a r b i L e ittle Fre Dear friends at First Presbyterian Church, Thank you so much for the prayers and cards that we received the last five months. God Bless each of you, Evelyn Morrow Heads Up! We have 25 tickets available (from a generous benefactor) for Faith Night at the Ports on August 15. Good seats, good baseball, good fellowship and fun! Put it on your calendar and watch for the sign-up sheet in Westminster Hall in July. The long-awaited New Testament Bible Reading Marathon had to be postponed due to Merilyn Vaughn's illness coupled with not quite enough sign -ups. A new date has not been set yet, but we are hoping it will be sometime in the summer. Watch for an announcement coming soon! Bike & Build is coming again this August. This year we are going to have an all church potluck for them on Friday, August 21. We will get to meet them and talk with them and hear a presentation about their trip and the organization. We are also hoping to have a bicycle clinic at some point. More on that later as we nail down the particulars. Be praying for them as they train and prepare for this life-changing trip. If you would like to help with the potluck or the breakfasts for them on Saturday, August 22 or Sunday, August 23, let John or Merilyn Vaughn or Lee Mecum know. “It is the policy of First Presbyterian Church of Stockton, that all persons, and in particular all children, youth and vulnerable adults, who participate in our programs and ministries and/or use our facilities will be cared for with compassion and will be safe. As a caring Christian community, we of First Presbyterian Church of Stockton (FPCS) are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all children, youth and adults and for all volunteers and employees working with them in the congregational life of FPCS. The intention of this policy is to protect children, youth and adults from abuse in any form and to ensure that those working with them are not exposed to false or unwarranted charges of abuse. Additionally, organizations using the facilities of FPCS shall provide a safe and nurturing environment for children, youth, vulnerable adults and those who work with them. They must sign and abide by this policy or provide proof that their organization has a similar policy in place and provide a signed copy…” The above is excerpted from the first paragraph of the FPCS Safe Church Policy. Copies in their entirety are available online, posted on the Session Bulletin Board and in the Church Office. See next page for example of what this policy requires of participants. “RightNow Media is like the Netflix of Christian Bible Study.” -Matt Chandler, Did you know that because of your connection to FPC you have access to RightNow Media? Take advantage of this awesome resource to grow your faith! June 13, 5 - 8 PM At the Buckley's 315 West Vine St. Here's how it works. Make something wonderful to share, pack up the kids and drop them off at the church where childcare will be provided. Then head to the Buckley's for food and grown-up fellowship. Please RSVP to Tami 670-5442. First Presbyterian Church is partnering with the Red Cross to help provide services to individuals and families when disaster strikes. We have agreed to allow our Church to be one of several facilities in the area that would be available as an emergency public shelter in the event of a disaster. As part of this partnership, we need to designate a "Facility Coordinator" (who is basically a contact person who can open our Church up in the event of a disaster and coordinate with the Red Cross' "Shelter Manager" who is the person designated by the Red Cross to manage the shelter.) Victor Naranjo and Eric Goldsmith have agreed to be the primary and secondary "Facility Coordinator". Out of an abundance of caution, we feel it would be wise to have a third person who could fulfill this role, should Victor or Eric be unavailable. Consequently, we are asking for an additional person or two from the Congregation to come forward and fill that third slot and fourth slot. Our Church has been available to the Red Cross for a number of years as an emergency public shelter, and fortunately our city has not experienced a major disaster requiring its use. We pray that will continue to be the case, but it is important to be prepared for that eventuality. If you are willing to serve as the 3rd or 4th back-up, or have questions, please contact any member of Finance, Building, and Grounds - Craig Holmes, Carol Dietrich, Joel Franklin, Eric Goldsmith, or Doug Hunt. This note was recently found in the Little Free Library. Thank you to EVERYONE who donated books...we received over 200! The books are going fast and now, after a month, some are coming back :) Even though the Deacon Project is technically over, we will continue to need donated books for ages 6 months - 18 years. So, if you are cleaning out, remember the Little Free Library and tell your neighbors and friends. Let’s get our neighbors excited about reading! Yes, June 21 is Father's Day and also the Summer Solstice, so we're having ice cream sundaes after church. Bring a memory if you can't bring your father (my dad was partial to banana splits and made great milkshakes). The Fellowship Committee will provide the ice cream and you can bring the toppings: syrups, nuts, fruit, cookies, brownies, whatever you like to put on ice cream. There will be a sign-up sheet in Westminster Hall next to the kitchen, just so everyone doesn't end up bringing the same thing. Though I guess if that happened, that would be okay because it would mean we all like our ice cream sundaes the same way! Answers to Kids Corner: 1. Andrew-brother (Mt. 4:18); 2.
