MEDICAL ASSOCIATION OF JAMAICA 19a WINDSOR AVENUE, KINGSTON 5 TEL: (876) 946-1105-7 FAX: (876) 946-1102 E-MAIL: [email protected] May 5, 2015 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ) hosted a meeting on Monday May 4th 2015, with the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and the President of the Jamaica Medical Doctors Association (JMDA). The meeting was facilitated to encourage direct engagement and discussion on the urgent and critical issues facing the health care system in Jamaica at this time. We are satisfied that all doctors are anxious to see widespread reform and improvements to Jamaica's health care delivery services. Discussions included the strengthening of the framework ("taskforce") to critically review ways to improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery especially in our hospitals. Both the Ministry of Health and the JMDA reiterated their commitments to improving the healthcare system. Patient care and well being remains a central consideration in all our discussions on reform of the sector. The association would like to allow both the leadership of the Ministry of Health and the JMDA time to further consider proposals made during that meeting. It is hoped that formal discussions on health reform will resume, with the now improved understanding between all parties. The MAJ remains committed to the development of Jamaica's health care system through collective dialogue, analysis and action. Dr. Shane Alexis President
