Some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover Feast
came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked
him, “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went and told
Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus
answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be
glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat
falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat;
but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life
loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it
for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where
I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor
whoever serves me. I am troubled now. Yet what should I say,
‘Father, save me from this hour?’ But it was for this purpose
that I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a
voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it and will glorify it
again.” The crowd there heard it and said it was thunder; but
others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered and
said, “This voice did not come for my sake but for yours. Now
is the time of judgment on this world; now the ruler of this
world* will be driven out. And when I am lifted up from the
earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” He said this indicating
the kind of death he would die. *Satan
En aquel tiempo había allí, en medio de la gente, varios griegos
que habían subido a Jerusalén para adorar a Dios en esta fiesta.
Se acercaron a Felipe, que era de Betsaida, en Galilea, para
pedirle un favor: “Señor, queremos ver a Jesús”. Felipe habló
con Andrés, y los dos fueron donde Jesús para decírselo. Por
toda respuesta Jesús declaró: “Ha llegado la hora en que el Hijo
del Hombre va a entrar a su gloria. En verdad os digo si el
grano de trigo no cae en tierra y no muere, queda solo; pero si
muere, da mucho fruto. El que ama su vida la destruye, y el que
desprecia su vida en este mundo la conserva para la vida eterna.
El que quiere servirme, que me siga, y donde yo esté, allí estará
el que me sirve. Si alguien me sirve, mi Padre le dará honor. Me
siento turbado ahora. ¿Diré acaso: Padre, líbrame de esta hora?
Pero no. Pues precisamente llegué a esta hora para enfrentar
esta angustia. Padre, ¡da gloria a tu nombre!” Entonces se oyó
una voz que venía del cielo: “Yo lo he glorificado y lo volveré a
glorificar”. Algunos de los que estaban allí y que escucharon la
voz, decían: “Fue un trueno”; otros decían: “Le ha hablado un
ángel”. Entonces Jesús hizo esta declaración: “Esa voz no fue
por mí, sino por ustedes. Ahora es el juicio del mundo: ahora el
amo* de este mundo va a ser expulsado. Y cuando Yo haya sido
levantado de la tierra, atraeré a todos a mí”. Jesús daba a
entender así de qué modo iba a morir. *Satanás
Brief commentary
Juan explica que algunos extranjeros (los llamaban griegos a
causa de su idioma), que se habían convertido a la fe de los
judíos o eran judíos de origen griego se encontraban entre la
gente. Este grupo no tenía los mismos derechos que los judíos
observantes, ni eran aceptados en el Templo de Jerusalén,
donde les estaba reservado un patio separado del de los judíos.
El interés manifestado por esos griegos da a Jesús la
oportunidad para anunciar que su reino se extenderá a toda la
tierra, cuando haya sido levantado en la cruz. Jesús va a morir y
nacerá la Iglesia universal. Jesús deja que su cuerpo sin vida sea
depositado en el sepulcro; cuando se levante de la sepultura, su
mismo cuerpo, ya glorificado, abarcará también a los creyentes
unidos a él. Juan también nos dice que, para Jesús, ha
terminado la revelación a través de palabras y milagros. Ahora
se inicia el gran signo revelador del amor de Dios: la “hora” de
la pasión gloriosa de Cristo. En este darse totalmente, Cristo nos
revela el amor tremendo de Dios por toda la humanidad.
Cuando Jesús fue alzado en la cruz, abrió el camino para la
salvación a todos: judíos y paganos. La obra salvífica y
liberadora de Cristo es universal y se ofrece a todos sin
distinción de razas, etnias o sexo.
According to John, those following Jesus included both Jews
and Greeks, that is, “the entire world.” Therefore, the passage
begins announcing that some Greeks who had come to worship
at the Passover Feast had asked to see Jesus. Perhaps they
were Greek-speaking Jews, or Greeks who were interested in
Judaism. In any case, it makes sense for John to use the
Greeks to indicate that Jesus’ mission extended beyond the
Jews to the Gentile world.
The “hour” refers to the moment when God will manifest his
presence in Jesus. This presence is nowhere more evident than
in Jesus’ act of self-sacrificing love, for that is the reflection of
God’s love for all. But this glory entails death, like the grain of
wheat which needs to fall into the ground and die in order to
produce much fruit. Jesus indicated that only after the
crucifixion could the gospel be available to both Jews and
Gentiles. Jesus’ words, “I am troubled now,” in this Gospel
could be John’s allusion to the Gethsemane agony scene
narrated by the Synoptic authors (Matthew, Mark and Luke).
Today’s reading offers three significant
messages:
 Jesus’ being raised on a cross and his burial
are also his glorification.
 The world’s prince of darkness will be driven
out by the light that is Jesus!
 The disciples are called to identical servant
roles.
Comentario
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas
importantes:
La pasión y muerte de Jesús son también su
momento de gloria.
La Luz que es Cristo expulsa de este mundo al
“amo” o príncipe de las tinieblas.
Jesús llama a sus discípulos a tener su misma
actitud de servicio y entrega a los demás.

PRAYER FOR A STEWARDSHIP PARISH
THE POWER OF CONSCIENCE
Deep within his conscience man discovers a law
which he has not laid upon himself but which he
must obey. Its voice, ever calling him to love and to
do what is good and to avoid evil, tells him inwardly
at the right moment: do this, shun that. For man
has in his heart a law inscribed by God. His dignity
lies in observing this law, and by it he will be
judged. His conscience is man’s most secret core,
and his sanctuary. There he is alone with God
whose voice echoes in his depths.

This is the fast that pleases me : to release those
bound unjustly, to let the oppressed go free, to
share your bread with the hungry and to shelter the
homeless poor, to clothe those who are naked, not
turning your back on your kind. If you do away

oppressed, your light will rise in the
darkness.

EL PODER DE LA CONCIENCIA
En lo profundo de su conciencia el hombre descubre
una ley que él no se ha dado a sí mismo, pero que
debe obedecer. Esa voz, siempre lo llama a amar y
hacer el bien y evitar el mal, le dice interiormente en
el momento justo: haz esto, evita aquello. Porque el
hombre tiene en su corazón una ley inscrita por
Dios. Su dignidad radica en la observación de esta
ley, y por lo cual será juzgado. Su conciencia es el
núcleo más secreto del hombre, y su santuario.
