Spring/Summer 2015 From the Chair Dear Faculty, Staff, Students and Stakeholders: Greetings! Let me just start by thanking you for an amazing 6 months! Your warm welcome, confidence, and friendship has been amazing. After visiting or conversing with many other departments nationwide, I truly believe we are unique and special……and PRODUCTIVE! With the help of amazing faculty and staff, in the last 6 months, we (1) evaluated 25 end-of-year faculty assessment packages, (2) submitted four new proposals for ENV HORT positions with industry letters of endorsement, (3) visited the top two industry events: FNGLA landscape show in Orlando, and TPIE in Fort Lauderdale, and (4) successfully recruited ten graduate students beginning this fall, statewide. Our faculty, staff, and students have received a number of prestigious awards! Please join me in congratulating them. In closing, thank you for this opportunity to serve, and lets join in complimenting our students on a job well done! Exciting opportunities are on the way…stay tuned! It was held at the President of UF’s house, and highlighted crop research by IFAS scientists. It featured varieties of blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes, citrus fruits, and other crops bred at the University. Attendees were able to sample these and other foods as prepared by local restaurants, such as Mildred’s Big City Food. FNGLA Frontrunners Meeting The FNGLA Chapter Frontrunners meeting was held on April 14th at Wilmot Gardens. The meeting began in the conference center, where members met up and were to take a tour of the gardens and the therapeutic gardening greenhouse. However, due to a rainstorm that lasted for a full hour, the entire meeting took place in the conference center. Dr. Charles Guy and Ms. Christy Penman gave a presentation on their current research project, the effect of gardening on brain activity. The group was very interested in seeing the results of the study, as it should shed light on how interacting with plants changes the patterns of neural activity in the brain. After their presentation, a few members were able to stay and take the originally scheduled tour of the gardens and greenhouse.
