Ya que abril es el mes oficial
para crear conciencia sobre el autismo, Any Baby Can ha realizado
la caminata contra el autismo en
San Antonio por los últimos 11
años durante este mes. Sin embargo, por primera vez decidieron
oficialmente unirse a la tradición
de Fiesta para así expandir el
evento y hacerlo más inclusivo.
“Queremos que todas las familias en la comunidad vengan a
divertirse”, expresó Sandra Jacobs,
coordinadora de servicios de autismo de Any Baby Can.

Thousands of cardboard children will appear throughout
Bexar County this April, as a
reminder of the children affected
by abuse and trauma each year.
ChildSafe, Bexar County’s
only Children’s Advocacy Center, kicked off National Child
Abuse Prevention Month on
Thursday, with the help of organizations and individuals like
District Attorney Nico LaHood,
the San Antonio Police Department, and the “Cardboard Kids.”
“Unfortunately, child abuse
occurs across every demographic; it knows no boundaries, it
happens everywhere,” said Kim
Abernethy, ChildSafe CEO. “So
ChildSafe created Cardboard
Kids to illustrate the pervasiveness of the issue and the fact that
every story is different and every
child unique,” she said.
Now in its second year, the
“Cardboard Kids” continue to
put a face on child abuse and
neglect issues.
ChildSafe works to provide Cardboard Kids appeared throughout Bexar County on Thursday, April 9, as part of ChildSafe’s awareness efforts during Child

este panorama.
El jueves por la tarde, las compañías ThinkVoting y OCI Group
lanzaron The Voting App, una
aplicación móvil bilingüe que
recauda información sobre las
próximas elecciones y presenta
los datos de una manera organizada.
“Hay una aplicación móvil
prácticamente para todo”, señaló
Joseph Santori, cofundador de
ThinkVoting. “Y por fin hay una
aplicación que ofrece información
detallada sobre todas las elecciones”.
La aplicación permite que los
usuarios comparen los candidatos, se enteren de las propuestas
en el boleto electoral, les recuerda
el día de las elecciones que salgan
a votar y presenta un mapa inte­
ractivo con los sitios de votación.
“La aplicación móvil junta toda
la información y la pone en la palma de tu mano, en un aparato que
más de 90 porciento de adultos
americanos usan”, añadió Santori.
Según Jeff Cárdenas, cofundador de ThinkVoting, la idea es que
diferentes grupos trabajen juntos
para conectar a la democracia al
siglo 21.
“Tenemos toda esta tecnología
a nuestro alcance, eso nos da el
poder de convertirnos en mejores
ciudadanos y tomar control de la
democracia en el país”, expresó
Cárdenas.
Por su parte, Phyllis Ingram,
presidenta de League of Women
Voters en San Antonio, comentó
que ella y su organización estarán
colaborando con ThinkVoting
para impulsar a más votantes,

Whether your biggest concern
with San Antonio is a long daily
work commute or the number
of recreational spaces in your
neighborhood, the way your city
looks and moves is guaranteed
to change over the next 25 years.
Although 25 years seems like
plenty of time, officials are already preparing for an additional
1.1 million people to move to the
city by 2040.
SA Tomorrow, the city’s new-
est growth initiative, approaches
the city’s expansion through
comprehensive planning, transportation and sustainability.
“We’re going to see a tremendous amount of growth, and it’s
going to basically impact how
you move your family around
over the next 25 years,” Terry
Bellamy, the assistant director of
Transportation and Capital Improvements said. “How do you
want your community to look?”
Whatever the answer, SA
Tomorrow wants the input of
city residents throughout the
planning process.
SA Tomorrow kicks off their
public outreach efforts on Saturday at the Alamo Convocation
Center, with opportunities for
families and individuals to voice
their opinions on what the city
needs to successfully grow.
According to a study analysis
released on Wednesday, the
most cost-effective method
of growth for the City budget
would be to develop San Antonio within its existing city limits.
SA Tomorrow has already begun
looking at examples of places
like Seattle that have used their
city limits as a way to better
develop their transportation
options, recreational areas, and
economic growth.
“Today’s generation of persons graduating from school
are looking where they want
to live first, then they pick the
job,” Deputy City Manager Peter Zanoni said. “If we want to
compete with cities across the
country, we have to keep that
in mind and give options to the
future generations.”
Officials want the public to
participate throughout the city’s
growth process, to represent the
wants and needs of the current
and future residents.
SA Tomorrow’s kickoff event
takes place at the Alamo Convocation Center at 110 Tuleta, next
to Alamo Stadium, Saturday,
April 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The free event will offer the
public a forum to discuss the
future of San Antonio housing,
jobs and transportation over the
next 25 years.
The day will include kidfriendly activities and prize
giveaways, as well as speeches
by Mayor Ivy Taylor and Councilman Ron Nirenberg, District
8.

La dependencia federal National Institute of Food and Agriculture asignó un presupuesto de
100 mil dólares para un programa
de nutrición para 200 futuras
madres en el Children’s Hospital
of San Antonio quienes, además
de la atención prenatal, reciben
orientación alimenticia para ellas
y el futuro bebé, además recibirán
una dotación de frutas y vegetales
en cada visita al doctor.
El miércoles, en San Antonio,
Food Bank se hizo el anuncio
oficial de este programa en el que
participan H-E-B, Centro Med,
Glodsbury Foundation, San Antonio Food Bank y San Antonio
Children’s Hospital. Estas instituciones compartirán la tarea de
adquirir los productos vegetales
necesarios para su distribución.
En la conferencia informativa,
la doctora Julie La Barba, direc-
tora médica del departamento
de educación familiar, dijo que
con esta dotación económica,
Children’s Hospital incluirá a 200
madres a los programas de asistencia que tiene regularmente a
beneficio de familias de modestos
recursos, cumpliendo así la prioridad número uno del hospital: el
bienestar de los niños .
Enfatizó en el beneficio que
representa el presupuesto asignado por National Institute of Food
and Agriculture, que permitirá a
la futura madre recibir orientación
profesional de doctores y dietistas, y así enfocarse en su propia
nutrición y en la bebé aún antes
de un nacimiento.

Comentarios... La esposa rebelde
“Dentro de la
constitución hay
formas de salir
de este desastre”. –Leopol­do
López
Todas las maJorge Ramos ñanas, a las 5:30,
Lilian Tintori se
levanta a rezar y a leer la Biblia.
Exactamente a la misma hora, su
esposo, el preso político Leopoldo
López, hace lo mismo en la cárcel
de Ramo Verde en Venezuela.
Eso acordaron antes que lo detuvieran hace más de un año. Así,
todos los días y a la misma hora,
Lilian y Leopoldo se conectan.
A Tintori le ha tocado hablar
por López porque a López no
lo dejan hablar. El gobernante,
Nicolás Maduro, nunca le perdonó
a López haber liderado las protestas de febrero del 2014 que casi
tumban al régimen. Le inventaron
cuatro cargos –daños a propiedad, incendios, asociación para
delinquir e instigación pública– y
poco después López se entregó a
las autoridades.
Su juicio es una farsa. Varias
organizaciones de derechos humanos, incluyendo a Amnistía
Internacional y Human Rights
Watch, consideran que su arresto
es injustificado; es el vil y burdo
intento de Maduro de reprimir al
principal líder opositor.
Pero Maduro se equivocó dos
veces. La primera, al crear un
mártir. No son pocos los que comparan el arresto de Maduro con el
de Nelson Mandela en Sudáfrica,
y todos sabemos cómo acaba esa
historia. La segunda equivocación
de Maduro fue menospreciar a
Tintori. Nunca sospechó que la
esposa de López sería tan combativa como él. Ese fue un grave
error de cálculo.
Tintori ha mantenido viva la
memoria, el sacrificio y la mi­
sión de López. Pelea todas las
peleas dentro de Venezuela. Y no
hay foro internacional donde no
aparezca. Así, Tintori, la esposa
rebelde, se ha convertido en una
de las principales amenazas a la
dictadura madurista.
La valentía de Tintori contrasta
con la cobardía de los presidentes latinoamericanos que no se
atreven a criticar las violaciones
a los derechos humanos y a la
democracia en Venezuela. (Su
silencio cómplice en la Cumbre
de las Américas en Panamá es
vergonzoso).
Tintori no para de hablar de
López. Cuando la entrevisté hace
poco en Miami, denunció torturas
en la cárcel.
A principios de este año, Antonio Ledezma, alcalde de Caracas,
fue arrestado, acusado de haber
participado en un intento de golpe
contra Maduro, acusación que
organizaciones de defensa de los
derechos humanos también han
denunciado. Tintori dice que la
celda de López en la prisión fue
invadida y registrada el mismo
día que Ledezma fue puesto bajo
custodia. “Entraron hombres armados y destrozaron su espacio,
se robaron sus memorias: Todo
lo que él escribe se lo robaron.
Siete horas duró esta requisa, y lo
metieron en una celda de castigo
que se llama El Tigrito”, me dijo.
“Una noche, a la 1 de la mañana,
le lanzaron por la ventana de su
celda excremento humano y orina.
Le cortaron el agua y la luz para
que no se pudiera bañar. Eso es
un trato absolutamente inhumano,
de tortura”.
Venezuela tiene uno de los
niveles de inflación y criminalidad
más altos del continente. La brutal
caída en los precios del petróleo y
el desabastecimiento la han convertido en una nación de muchas
filas y aún mayor frustración.
La pregunta, la gran pregunta en
Venezuela, es ¿cómo salir de este
desastre de una manera legal?
Maduro no va a renunciar, le
digo a Tintori.
“Ojalá renunciara si quisiera
a Venezuela”, me responde. “El
sistema fracasó. Es un sistema
antidemocrático que fracasó”.
Así, una de las pocas opciones
legales es realizar un referéndum revocatorio. Hasta el mismo
Maduro lo sabe. Deben “recoger
sus firmas en el 2016 y medirse
en un referéndum revocatorio”,
le dijo a la oposición. El problema
es que el organismo que cuenta los
votos en Venezuela también está
controlado por Maduro.
Mientras tanto, a Maduro le
incomoda y mucho López y su
esposa. Antes que Leopoldo se
entregara, Maduro les ofreció irse
del país. “Que por favor se fuera
de Venezuela, que el avión estaba listo”, recordó Tintori. “Esto
fue un mensaje que nos mandó
Maduro directamente a mi casa.
Le dijimos ‘no’”.
Maduro se equivoca si cree que
Tintori se va a dar por vencida.
“Yo me casé con Leopoldo”, me
dice, “y me casé con su compromiso de una mejor Venezuela. No
voy a parar. No voy a parar”.
Tintori no está sola. Otras esposas de presos políticos, como
Mitzy Capriles de Ledezma, esposa de Antonio Ledezma, también están dando la batalla por la
libertad y la democracia. Parece
ser que en Venezuela, un país tan
matriarcal, serán las mujeres, otra
vez, las que encuentren una solución a esta crisis.
En eso piensa Tintori todos los
días a las 5:30 de la mañana.

Just a Thought: Fiesta time again!

With just
four days to
the beginning of Fiesta 2015, the
thrill of another Fiesta
brings back
many memories of past
Fiestas for me.
I find myself once again reminiscing about the past celebrations
I have been fortunate to be an
active participant in over the last
30 years downtown during “Viva
Fiesta.”
As a past President of the San
Antonio Junior Chamber of Commerce, (aka Jaycees), I was honored to ride in one of the many
floats in the Battle of Flowers
Parade as well as the River Parade
in 1982. In 1983 during my term
as Chairman of the Board, I did it
again. I also marched in numerous other years as a Jaycee board
member before my one year term
as President as well.
One of the big events of Fiesta
for the Jaycees was La Semana
Alegre held in the HemisFair area
for nearly twenty years. I actively
participated in seven of those
events from 1977-1983.
During that time we hosted
many big name bands to perform
nightly, along with providing
games and other activities during our Fiesta participation. The
money we raised was used to
fund our non-profit events such
as the Orphan’s Christmas Shopping Tour. During that event
we escorted kids from the local
orphanages, along with off-duty
police officers and firefighters, on
a shopping spree at Christmas for
items such as clothes and shoes
for school. They got as much out
of it as we did hosting the event.
In the late nineties and forward
to 2007 as a Balcones Heights
City Councilman or Mayor Pro
Tem, I was also able to ride in
those same two parades on a float
representing the City.
For the past eight years I have
been actively covering Fiesta
events by shooting photos for my
photo blog Walker Report and
also for La Prensa of San Antonio.
Every year I begin my coverage
with the opening ceremony in the
Alamo Plaza, move on to events
like the Taste of New Orleans, the
River Parade, the Battle of Flowers, and various activities each
year. Sometimes I cover different
events, especially when new ones
are added to the schedule as other
groups no longer participate.
One event I am especially
partial to covering since I can’t
cover them all is the St. Gregory’s
Catholic Church Festival. As a
graduate of St. Gregory’s in 1960
from 8th grade, I admit I do tend
to favor that particular event.
Every year without fail, I walk
by my 8th grade classroom and
reminisce with those around me
about attending the school. I even
experience flashbacks of holding
out the palms of my hands to allow
Mother Mary John to take a whack
with a ruler for my misdeeds and
misbehavior! Who knew?
Now my former classroom has
been turned into a 2nd grade class.
Still looks the same however. Last
year, one young student asked
me if I was old. I informed him I
wasn’t old, but I had been around
a very long time!
With the River Parade yet to
come along with the Battle of
Flowers, I might see some of you
out there in the streets with my
camera and press pass. If so, be
sure to say hello, smile for the
camera and enjoy the upcoming
Fiesta celebration.

avances de investigación y médicos, ahora hay más personas
sobrevivientes de este asesino.
Pero lo que fue reconocido hace
quince años sigue siendo el caso
hoy en día. Los afro-americanos
siguen teniendo la tasa más alta,
y la supervivencia más baja, para
la mayoría de los cánceres, más
que cualquier otro grupo racial
y étnico en los Estados Unidos.

In 2014, there were 5,434
confirmed cases of child abuse in
Bexar County and 12 child deaths
from abuse in 2014. Although
those numbers showed a slight
decrease from the previous year,
the numbers are still too high.

too big for one agency to tackle,
rather we as a community must
rally together to learn how to
identify it, report it and zealously
punish those who target and harm
our most vulnerable citizens,”
Abernethy said.

Galvan, whose district encompasses the Westside Creeks. “This
project is a testament to the City’s

tremendous natural resource of
Alazán Creek to develop the
recreational and educational
potential.”
The Westside Creeks hike
and bike trail improvements
are intended to complement the
Westside Creeks Restoration
Project, which is focused on
ecosystem restoration and public enhancement of the Alazán,
Apache, and Martínez and San
Pedro creeks. These creeks were
channelized as part of a federal
flood control project in the 50’s.
The Westside Creeks Restoration
Oversight Committee (WCROC)
has initiated the Westside Creeks
Restoration Project plan with
goals including environmental
enhancements, bank stabilization,
erosion control, water quality
enhancement, and creating and
retaining of habitat for aquatic
species as well as native and
migratory bird species. The goals
also include development of recreational amenities specifically
including hike and bike trails,
which will expand the existing
City-wide trails network.
The Westside Creek hike and
bike trail improvements will
ultimately connect the Westside
Creeks with the San Antonio
River Mission Reach Project
at the confluence of San Pedro
Creek and the river. For more

Disfruten Fiesta en buena salud

Fiesta San Antonio 2015 se
estará desarrollando del jueves
16 al domingo 26 de abril, en lo
que serán 124 ediciones desde su
creación –que data desde el año
de 1891–. Esto hace a la ciudad
de El Álamo ser huésped de una
celebración de gran tradición que
se celebra en el país.
San Antonio es una municipalidad cuyo mayor sostenimiento
económico es la industria hotelera,
en la que su engranaje principal
es su gente, que gusta sobresalir
exponiendo el prestigio y las oportunidades de lograr una mejor
calidad de vida.
Por estas fechas todos estaremos
echando la casa por la ventana,
tal y como lo hacemos durante el
año en las diversas festividades
que celebramos. Esto a través
de una gama de actividades gastronómicas, culturales, deportivas
y artesanales.
Lo principal de Fiesta San
Antonio son sus tres magnos
desfiles: el Texas Cavaliers River
Parade, Battle of Flowers Parade
y Flambeau Parade, a los que se
acompaña el buen comer y los
brindis con bebidas azucaradas y
de contenido alcohólico.
Es aquí en donde mi recomendación es en general para toda persona adulta que estará disfrutando
de las maravillas en los desfiles
mencionados, así como en otras
actividades y eventos que por
tradición se presentan durante los
once días de Fiesta San Antonio.
Si deciden saborear los diversos
platillos que se estarán vendien­
do en puestos ubicados en la vía
en mis años de tomador, cada vez
que llevé a mi hijo a Fiesta San
Antonio, él gustaba pasear en casi
todos los atractivos de acuerdo a
su edad. También se engolosinaba
con las coloridas “raspas”, algodón
de azúcar, lo cual le quitaba el hambre y comía poca comida.
Yo, como es tradición, tomaba
una cerveza en cada puesto, cuando
recorríamos los atractivos que
comenzaban frente al restaurante
Pico de Gallo y finalizaban en la
Catedral de San Fernando.
Mi hijo iba con la barriga bien
endulzada y yo con el cerebro
atrofiado porque no media las consecuencias en el consumo de las
“chelas”, que –por el calor– bebía
una tras otra.
Hubo ocasiones en que tuve que
llevar a mi hijo a la sala de emergencia del Hospital Santa Rosa,
donde se le llegó a dar asistencia
médica por empacho.
A mí el único daño que me
hacía el alto consumo de bebidas
embriagantes eran las tremendas
“crudas”, acompañadas de ansiedad y pésimo sabor de boca.
Con el paso de los años, mi hijo,
al cumplir los 10 años, decidió
no ir más a los festejos de Fiesta,
porque yo había dejado de tomar,
y él ya tenía otros pasatiempos
para divertirse durante el periodo
del tradicional festejo que en verdad nos dejó bonitos recuerdos a
pesar de los malestares que ambos
padecimos.
Lo mejor de todo fue que durante los años que mi hijo y yo
disfrutamos juntos de Fiesta, gustábamos viajar de casa al centro en
el bus, para así no correr el riesgo
de que yo ya tomado manejara o
nos llegaran a causar daño otros
conductores en estado de ebriedad.
En estas celebraciones de Fiesta
San Antonio 2015, los invito a
que se diviertan a más no poder,
disfruten de todos los atractivos,
comidas y bebidas.
Si toman, por favor no conduzcan sus automóviles o motocicletas, todo parece fácil, pero
la verdad es otra, en caso de ser
detenidos por sospechas de ir
conduciendo bajo estado etílico,
las autoridades correspondientes
estarán al tanto resguardando la
seguridad pública. Conducir bajo
la influencia de bebidas alcohólicas es también una enfermedad
que nos puede llevar no solo al
hospital, sino a la quiebra personal
y emocional.
Que esta Fiesta San Antonio
2015 la gocen en buen estado de
salud, claro que para muchos les
será difícil, más no imposible.

Qualified mental health professionals should conduct a comprehensive evaluation and provide
treatment for children who have
been abused. Through treatment,
the abused child begins to regain a
sense of self-confidence and trust.
The family can also be helped to
learn new ways of support and
communicating with one another.
Parents may also benefit from
support, parent training and anger
management.
Physical abuse is not the only
kind of child abuse. Many children are also victims of neglect, or
sexual abuse, or emotional abuse.
In all kinds of child abuse, the
child and the family can benefit
from evaluation and treatment
from a qualified mental health
professional.

que lo mismo nos pasa cuando
nos vemos en el espejo.

sus cuerpos el día de hoy. Estudios comprueban que mientras más hacemos esto, más
incrementan nuestros niveles de
estrés y hasta nos podrá llevar a
la depresión.
“¡BASTA!” Literalmente
quie­ro que te digas esa palabra
cada vez que entre un pensamiento negativo sobre ti. Si no
estás contenta con lo que ves en
el espejo, deja de hablar mal y
haz algo al respecto. Haz ejercicio, come saludable, y aprecia
tu cuerpo por todas las cosas que
puede hacer en vez de enfocarte
en como se ve.
No te compares con otras
personas. Enfócate en mejorar
al máximo lo que tú tienes y en
lo que puedes ofrecer. Camina
con la cabeza hacia arriba, los
hombros atrás, ¡sonríe más! Esta
actitud es contagiosa y cambiará
tu forma de pensar al instante.
Entre mujeres nos chuleamos a

¡BASTA YA! Nosotros mere­
cemos algo mucho mejor que
esto. Si no se lo dirías a una

a ti misma. No permitas que una

equivocada impida tu felicidad.

more in the company of others,
and most people with Alzheimer’s
may pull away from socializing or
may live alone.
Loss of appetite.
Not recognizing hunger cues.
Becoming overwhelmed by
the eating environment or food
choices.
Forgetting to eat, the purpose
of eating or how to use eating
utensils.
To encourage the person to eat.
Serve meals in a quiet environment away from the television and
other distractions.
Keep the table setting simple
with only the utensils needed for
eating; other objects on the table
may be distracting or confusing.
Offer one food item at a time,
first serve mashed potatoes, then
cooked meat; too many food
choices may be overwhelming.

The Duke Blue Devils men’s
basketball team and the University of Connecticut Lady Huskies
women’s basketball showed their
dominance winning National
Championships this week but their
coaches also made history.
Coach Mike Kzryzweski or
“Coach K” is arguably one of the
greatest coaches of all time due to
his success not only leading Team
USA to two recent gold medals,
but leading his team at Duke to
yet another NCAA championship.
The hall of fame coach won his
fifth championship as head coach
at Duke and it’s a triumphant return
to the top after taking some scrutiny from fans after the early tournament loss to Mercer last year.
The three time Naismith College
coach of the year has over 1,000
wins under his belt along with
two FIBA World Championship
gold medals along with two bronze
medals. Coach K has read the pinnacle of his career.
While having accomplished everything there is to accomplish as a
coach he loves the game and will
continue to prove his dominance
in the NCAA and land a couple
of future NBA star recruits along
the way.
The UConn women’s team has
reigned supreme in women’s college basketball for the past decade
with head coach Geno Auriemma.
The six time Naismith college
coach of the year award winner
won his 10th championship with
his lady huskies the fourth within
the past three years. Auriemma has
been loved by many but also made
into a villain due to his success.
He’s been a coach not to shy
away from the media which has
made many other coaches seem to
not take his “confidence” lightly.
UConn defeated recent rival the
Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Coach
Muffet McGraw and former Tennessee university coach Pat Summit have popular rivalries with
Auriemma. Summit, before her
retirement due to Alzheimer’s,
had a heated rivalry since the
early 1990’s, Auriemma has the
more recent success and has since
turned his fighting words to Coach
McGraw.
Although having feuds with
other coaches there is no denying his career success. He joins
former legendary UCLA Men’s
Coach John Wooden to have 10
championships. Along with two
Olympic gold medal’s coaching
the Women’s Team USA, he is
inducted in three halls of fame.
Coach K and Coach Auriemma
have dominated college basketball
and don’t look to slow down just
yet. Time will tell just how many
more championships they’ll decide
to win but for now, they celebrate
their recent success and begin to
focus on next season.

The legend that is Jack Nicklaus was in
Augusta, Georgia. The Day before the
Masters begins a Par 3 contest is held.
Teamed with Ben Crenshaw and Gary
Player, Nicklaus sank a hole-in-one in
the fourth during Wednesday’s Par 3
contest at Augusta National.

Getting gray has no effect on the Silver and Black

There are times when superlatives fail greatness.
In the case of the San Antonio
Spurs, it is hard to find a compliment that has not described their
tradition, class or winning ways.
Yet at their core are the familiar
faces of Manu Ginobili, Tony
Parker and Tim Duncan.
For over 700 games, the international trio has altered the
National Basketball Association
(NBA) formula for success. As
they leave Boston’s heralded
triplets of Larry Bird, Kevin
McHale and Robert Parrish behind, the only question is how
much more time is left in the
Duncan era.
It is the perennial elephant in
the room how much the 38 yearold Duncan has left in the tank.
It’s a different story for the 33
year-old Tony Parker as he as-
sumes the role of catalyst for the
offense. Despite nagging injuries
that spanned his hamstring and
Achilles heel, the Spurs are currently on a nine-game winning
streak.
For the man from Bahia Blanca, Argentina, Ginobili has found
a home coming off the bench.
The emergence of Khawi Leonard as a dual threat and as a defensive leader and leading scorer
has further taken the weight off
the aging veterans. The combinations of Danny Green, Tiago
Splitter, Patty Mills and Marco
Belinelli have provided the lift
off the bench to the tune of 69
points in their last match-up
against Orlando.
Yet with so many cogs in the
Spurs system, one would think
the championship trio would lose
that chemistry that has defined
the second winningest professional franchise in sports. It is
was what LeBron James called
“a well-oiled machine” following the Heat meltdown during
the 2014 NBA Finals.
It is a phrase that the San
Antonio faithful know all too
well--role players. It does not
simply apply to those removed
from the limelight, but to those
engulfed by it.
It is Parker on the point, Duncan posting up for the shot or
kick-out pass and Ginobili working on the screen to find the open
look. It has been run so many
times; it is second nature for fans
and players alike.
When it works, it is poetry
in motion. For the defense, it’s
something entirely different.
Ingenious! Unstoppable! And it
is perhaps why the River Walk
anticipates a parade to honor the
Silver and Black at the end of
every season. All three all-stars
work seamlessly together and
they know it.
In truth, retirement will call the

big three in due time. For now,
the advent of each season makes
hope for another title spring eternal. So as free agency splinters
once-dynamic teams into shadows of their former selves, the
Spurs silently move forward with
their Mount Rushmore intact.
With San Antonio currently
in the sixth seed in the Western
Conference, they are less concerned with whom they play
rather than how they play. As the
big three look to what may be one
last ride, it has been a beautiful
relationship.

& Black Give Back (SBGB)
recently named five student-led
groups as this year’s 2014-15
Team Up Challenge Champions
awarding $20,000 to each. Last
fall, 20 Team Up Challenge semifinalists received $2,500 to help
start their service learning projects. The five Champions were
selected based on presentations
made to the Team Up Challenge
review committee, online voting
and overall commitment to making a community impact over the
course of the academic year.
2014-15 Team Up Challenge
Champions:
Colonial Hills Elementary
School (NEISD): Noticing a need
for access to resources on healthy
eating and physical activity in
the area, Colonial Hills Giving
Back hosted four community
outreach events throughout the
year. Each event was a fun way
to educate their community on
healthy living and benefitted a local organization. The students at
Colonial Hills Elementary asked
that those attending each event
bring an item to be donated to an
organization in need such as the
San Antonio Food Bank. With
the $20,000 the group plans to
improve the school’s field and
create walking trails for school
and community use.
Constructions Careers Academy (NISD): The students at
Construction Career Academy
applied their construction skills
to a series of shipping containers, creating living quarters to be
presented to the community at the
Parade of Homes. Each container
had a theme: ADA Complaint,
Green Energy, Indoor-Outdoor
Living (double container), and the
Man Cave using Smart Technology. Through this project, Construction Careers Academy was
able to educate the community
on the benefits and application
of Green Energy features and the

Gilbert Jr. es producto de
Little League y del béisbol preparatoriano y ha ganado diversas

habilidad para cubrir diferentes
posiciones en el terreno de juego,
lo cual ha venido realizando con
las aves nocturnas por espacio
de cinco temporadas en las que
ya ha colaborado en la conquista

Father David Garcia celebrates 40 years of priesthood

Father David Garcia, whose
boundless passion and enthusiasm
for a variety of priestly assignments
over the years has aptly earned him
the “Energizer Bunny” moniker,
celebrated 40 years in the priesthood on March 20 at St. Luke
Church. Concelebrating the Mass
were Bishop Gerald Barnes of the
Diocese of San Bernardino, Father
Virgil Elizondo and Msgr. Michael
Boulette, in the presence Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS,
Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of
Amarillo John W. Yanta, Auxiliary
Bishop Emeritus Thomas J. Flanagan and many fellow priests, family
members and friends.
Reflections and thanks for Father
Garcia’s work began with Father
Elizondo’s homily, which referred
to his “priestly heart,” noting that
while he had accomplished many
wonderful things, Father Garcia
had always held his greatest honor
to be that of “priest of Jesus Christ.”
“I have thanked the Lord for your
priesthood on many occasions,”
said Archbishop Gustavo to Father
Garcia at the final blessing, noting
his genuine love of the local church
and its history. “I have fallen in
love with the Archdiocese of San
Antonio because of you,” he said.
Master of ceremonies, Father
James Barlow, pastor at St. Luke,
recalled camping trips with him in
their younger years and introduced
Msgr. Michael Boulette, who had
known Father Garcia since they
were teenagers.
Explaining he had been asked to
speak of his friend’s ministry from
the point of view of a fellow priest,
Msgr. Boulette began by expressing gratitude to Father Garcia’s
parents, now deceased, who played
not only a large part in their son’s
life, but in the lives of himself and
their fellow seminarians.
“I know they are still with us in
spirit,” he said.
He described Father Garcia’s
priesthood as being one modeled
after Jesus Christ.
“Those of us who have known
you for decades, David,” he said,
“know beyond any reasonable
doubt that you have met this Lord
and he is the reason why your
priesthood has meant so much to
us.”
His priesthood has also been
dedicated to the faithful, he observed, noting, “We have watched
you love the people of God with
your whole life.”
Lastly, as a member of the ordained priesthood, Father Garcia
has evidenced his devotion to sacred duty, Msgr. Boulette related,
administering the sacraments to the
faithful and ministering to all with
whom he comes in contact.
“To each of us, you have decided
we are precious — children of God,
an image of Jesus,” he said. “We
thank God for you, and you for the
journey of faithfulness.”
Father Garcia’s five sisters stood
together at the podium to speak
about their brother. They told of
coming from a family who prayed
the rosary together daily and noted
Msgr. A.A. Leopold and the Brigidine Sisters at St. Paul’s Catholic
School had been an important
influence in furthering his desire to
become a priest at a young age. Before recalling his accomplishments
within the family and as a diocesan
priest, the siblings could not resist
gently ribbing him on being the
family’s sole son, proclaiming in
perfect unison, “Blessed are you
among women!”
Lionel Sosa, a friend since Father
Garcia’s days as rector of San Fernando Cathedral, rounded out the
speeches by recalling the priest’s
phenomenal fundraising abilities,
having overseen the cathedral’s
restoration, followed by restoration of missions Concepción, San
José, San Juan and Espada, projects
involving millions of dollars.
He accomplished this, said Sosa,
“by stepping out of the parish and
into the community, because he
knows he’s got a great word to put
out — the word of God, the word
that must be heard by everyone.”
Last to speak was Father Garcia
himself, who reflected on his 40
years in the priesthood.
“We can live our lives in one of
two ways, he said: As if nothing
were a miracle or as if everything
is a miracle.”
He was there to testify to the
latter, recalling how, as a 4-yearold, he had dashed across Houston
Street, narrowly avoiding being hit
by car which came to a stop inches
from him. The driver had just come
from having the failing brakes on
her car repaired.
Thanking all present for “the
miracle of your friendship,” he
proceeded with a brief background
of his life and the people who
had shaped him. Due to a speech
defect, he related, he was teased
mercilessly by his kindergarten
classmates and begged his mother
not to make him go to school anymore. Instead, she took him the
newly founded Harry Jersig Speech
Therapy Center at Our Lady of the
Lake College, where Sister Mary
Arthur Carrow, a speech therapist,
patiently worked with him for six
months. “I haven’t stopped talking
since,” he quipped.
Especially significant in his life
and priesthood, he related, were
his extraordinary parents, Dionisio
and Emma Vela Garcia. Both came
from the Valley and had roots that
reached back to Spanish Colonial
days. His father’s ancestors received a land grant from the king of
Spain in 1750, which is still owned
by their descendents.
However, by the time his father’s
family moved to San Antonio,
they were struggling with poverty.
Dionisio was the first and only
boy in his family to go to college
(thanks to an older brother’s help)
and graduated from the University
of Texas, Austin, as a pharmacist
in 1941, a time when most of
the Hispanics at UT came from
wealthy families in Mexico or
South America. Eventually he had
his own business.
Father Garcia’s maternal grandmother was widowed while in her
40s in Port Lavaca, but managed
to raise a family of nine on her
own during the Great Depression,
then went on to send all four of her
daughters to UT in the 1930s, while
the boys stayed home and worked.
She was determined her daughters
would never have to go through
what she did.
“We call her the first Hispanic
feminist,” Father Garcia chuckled.
His father, he related, taught him
to work hard, love family, maintain
friendships, remain faithful to the
church, have a sense of humor and
never take yourself too seriously.
“These are all probably the key
that has served me the most in my
priesthood,” he said. His mother was involved in various parish organizations in St. Paul
Parish and got him into everything
from altar boys to Little League to
Boy Scouts.
“There’s something about mothers that stays inside of you all your
life,” he mused. “I know I have
Mom inside of me, and for that I
am so grateful.”
He thanked the many family
members who had traveled to be
there that night for their part in his
life and the priests, brothers and
sisters who had taught him at St.
Martin Hall, St. Paul, St. Henry and
Notre Dame.
“All of them helped to form me,”
he said.
The priests and sisters he has
worked with have also left a lasting impression on him, he related,
and he recognized the presence
of Bishop Jerry Barnes, a close
friend from seminary days, and
remembered Archbishop Patrick
F. Flores, whom he had served as
secretary, calling him “my second
father” and the one who showed
him what true servant leadership
and humility is all about. All men
and women religious present were
asked to stand and be recognized,
as were past and present public
officials.
Father Garcia related he was as
excited to be a priest that day as he
was at his ordination and on the day
he entered St. John’s Seminary 52
years before – the place that formed
his priesthood.
“What comes around goes
around,” he said. “I’m now part of
the team that the archbishop has set
up to work on a project to restore
some of the buildings at St. John’s
for future use related to church
work and the missions.”
His final words were on the
inspiration he receives from Pope
Francis and thoughts of “the hundreds of millions of our sisters
and brothers in need throughout
the world,” along with a sobering
thought on the need to encourage
vocations.
“In the next five years,” he said,
“half of all the active priests in the
United States will retire. We need
to invite the best and brightest to
consider this life today.”
The closing prayer was given by
José and Mary Vasquez, the first
couple at whose marriage Father
Garcia had officiated.
“Dear God,” they prayed, “we
thank you for the spiritual presence
of David’s parents, Dionisio and
Emma Garcia at this celebration.
They must be beaming with pride
at his devotion and faithful service
to you.”

emociones dañinas!

Reaccionar es natural. Si alguien
grita, te espantas. Si un sonido
llega abruptamente, te asombras.
Las emociones son como bombas
llenas de energía emocional que
pueden sacarte de balance. Lo
más importante es que aprendas de
cada reacción, que te conozcas a ti
mismo y el dominio propio entre
al rescate.
Puedes reaccionar de diferentes
formas. Algunas aceptables, otras
no.
No permitas que las emociones
te jueguen una mala pasada.
Controlar el carácter toma tiempo, toma pensamientos y determinación.
Lo ideal es que tu sentimentalismo o debilidad emocional, tu
brusquedad, necedad o fuerza bruta
NO sea quien gobierne.
“No salgas a pleito presto, no
sea que no sepas qué hacer al fin,
cuando tu prójimo te haya dejado
confuso”. “Trata tu causa con tu
compañero y no descubras el secreto a otro, no sea que te deshonre
el que oyere” Pr 25:8-10
Establece tu reino. ¡BALANCE! Establece balance.
Desecha eso que te molesta y
lastima, dale una forma y aviéntalo
que se vaya fuera, cree y confía que
lo sacas con autoridad.
¿Quién gobierna en tu alma? Si te
gobernó por momentos el coraje, el
resentimiento, rectifica. ¡BASTA!
Ahora detén también la culpabilidad, para que no siga rodando en
su inercia esta rueda sin fin.
Debes detener la rueda, que sube
y baja con el ánimo de dañar, ella
encuentra argumentos a favor y en
contra. Finalmente quien sufre por
estos cambios eres tú.
¡Tú gobiernas! De otra forma
estarías permitiendo que esa fuerza
te jale a ningún lado razonable. Yo
no lo permito, también depende
de ti, no lo permitas tú. Levántate
con determinación, con decisión y
amor a ti.
Establece en primer lugar la
paz en ti. Buena voluntad, deja el
pasado en el pasado, a todos los
pensamientos que te lastimaron
¡quémalos! Pídeme que quite esas
raíces, que has encontrado. Entrégamelas, déjame quitarlas todas.
Alguien te lastimó y por esa
razón reaccionas así. Detente,
ámate, ven a mis brazos para que
limpie el jardín donde es plantado
ahora tu amor por ti mismo, tu gozo
de estar en el reino, tu dominio, el
carácter que te corresponde, porque
eres mi hijo.
Cerca tu jardín, para que ninguna
emoción negativa entre a pisarlo.
Qué ningún argumento “valioso”
mueva nuestra alegría, templanza,
ánimo, buen humor, gozo.
Que nada te haga dudar de tu
valía y capacidad en el reino;
por más “valiosas” que parezcan
las razones. Bástate mi gracia,
porque mi poder se manifiesta en
tú debilidad.
Permanece alegre en Mí, fuerte
en Mí. Sé paciente contigo y caminemos juntos.

(Día Internacional de la Salud)
A todos nos interesa conservar
la salud. El siguiente consejo
sobre cómo lograrlo proviene de
un campesino de setenta y nueve
años de edad de Camagüey en la
isla de Cuba. En una entrevista
que se le hizo a principios de la
década de 1960, Justo declara:
“Hay un dicho que dice que la
salud entra por la boca y hay otro
que dice que el cuidado de la boca
es la salud del cristiano, que viene
a decir lo mismo de otra manera.
Esos dichos quieren decir muchas
cosas...: que se debe comer bien,
sin robarle la comida a nadie, pero
sin hartarse; que no se debe comer
lo que se sabe qué hace daño; que
no se debe comer lo que uno no
conoce sin hacer antes una prueba
con un poquito, por si acaso...”.
Si le hemos prestado atención a
Justo, con mayor razón debemos
hacerle caso al sabio Salomón
en cuanto a este importantísimo
tema. Uno de sus proverbios más
sustanciosos dice así: “Panal de
miel son las palabras amables:
endulzan la vida y dan salud al
cuerpo”. Si bien “la salud entra
por la boca” Salomón nos da a
entender que es por allí mismo que
sale. De modo que debemos tener
mucho cuidado con las palabras
que salgan de nuestra boca. Si
son amables y oportunas, surten
el efecto de un panal de miel, pero
multiplicado por dos: endulzan la
vida y dan salud al cuerpo tanto del
que las pronuncia como del que las
recibe. Por eso también escribe el
incomparable proverbista: “Como
naranjas de oro con incrustaciones
de plata son las palabras dichas a
tiempo”.
A la inversa, las palabras malas
y dañinas son igualmente perjudiciales. Sobre este poder de las
palabras se pronuncia de manera
tajante el apóstol Santiago. Por
una parte juzga que la lengua es un
mundo de maldad que contamina
todo el cuerpo, un fuego que a su
vez incendia todo el curso de la
vida, un mal irrefrenable, lleno
de veneno mortal. Pero por la
otra concluye que, así como con
la lengua maldecimos a las personas, creadas a imagen de Dios,
también con ella bendecimos a
nuestro Señor.
¿De veras nos interesa conservar
la salud física? Si es así, debemos
reconocer que la salud espiritual es
muchísimo más importante porque
es eterna. Para tener esa salud
espiritual basta con que acatemos
las palabras de San Pablo, que
dijo: “Si confiesas con tu boca
que Jesús es el Señor, y crees en
tu corazón que Dios lo levantó de
entre los muertos, serás salvo”. Es
solo cuestión de reconocer a Jesucristo como Señor de nuestra vida.
Una vez que hayamos empleado la
lengua para tomar esa decisión sin
igual, vamos a querer emplearla,
como señala Santiago, para bendecir
a nuestro Señor.
Entonces nos esforzaremos por
llevar a la práctica el proverbio de
Salomón que dice: “El charlatán
hiere con la lengua como con
una espada, pero la lengua del
sabio brinda alivio”. Así, como
nos recuerda Justo de Camagüey,
“el cuidado de nuestra boca será
nuestra salud”.
“Dame entendimiento para seguir tus preceptos, pues
quiero meditar en tus maravillas”

Highlands High School
(SAISD): After seeing and excess
of stray animals in their neighborhood and at Southside Lions
Park, students in the Voices for
Animals programs at Highlands
High School met with District
3 City Councilwoman Rebecca
Viagran and worked together
to create a mobile vaccination
event at the school. On January
24, over 200 pets received free
rabies vaccinations and more
than 60 animals were signed up
to be spayed or neutered. Each
pet also received complimentary
bags of food, treats and nail trims
form the group. Throughout the
project, Voices for Animals rescued and found homes for eight
dogs and two cats, and helped
reunite a dog with his owner.
With the $20,000 the group will
create toolkits that will help other
schools implement the project
on their neighborhoods, and will
continue to assist a local animal
shelter with veterinary, grooming, and food costs for dogs rescued from Southside Lions Park.
Mead Elementary School
(NISD): The Student Council
helped take learning beyond the
classroom by designing a mobile
library called “Sweet Stories”
for their community. The group
planned the library by ordering
books, designing an official logo,
and marketing on social media
sites. Unique to the library are
fiction and non-fiction stories
published by the students, who
also held storytelling events
to promote literacy. With the
$20,000 the Mead Elementary
Student Council plans to purchase
a small truck to house the library,
and will buy physical books as
well as iPads for digital books.
The team also plans to purchase
outdoor seating for mobile library
events.
Stevens High School (NISD):
Stevens High School’s Transformers…The Fit Falcons is a
team constructed from a variety of
students on campus that wanted to
make a difference in their community. The group crafted a Biggest
Loser-style competition between
students, staff and community
members and earned experience
as student personal trainers. The
Fit Falcons offered free classes
to the community on résumé
building, financial education,
continuing education resources,
computer classes, and nutrition
and healthy cooking, and provided free daycare for each. With
the $20,000 the group will be able
to create an outdoor recreational
area on or near the campus, host
motivational speakers, provide
workbooks and materials, and
create Family Fun Nights.
The Team Up Challenge encourages students to apply what
they are learning in the classroom
to the real world, bringing education alive in powerful ways. Students create projects that address
needs that will help improve their
community in one of five categories: Arts & Culture, Education,
Environment, Health & Wellness
or Uniformed Services. As a premier initiative of Silver & Black

players have worked alongside
the students to help bring their
vision to life.

Councilman Ron Nirenberg
of District 8 joined area organizations and City officials in
celebrating the end of a project
to improve the Hamilton Wolfe
and Babcock intersection in the
Medical Center. The Medical
Center Intersection Improvements Phase IX project was
funded through the 2012-2017
Bond Program.
“The Medical Center is a
hub of economic growth for
San Antonio and all of South
Texas,” Councilman Nirenberg
said. “Improvements like these
allow for continued world-class
patient care and bioscience
research.”
Through collaboration with
the Medical Center Alliance
and the San Antonio Medical Foundation, projects to
improve the Medical Center
area have been underway since
voters approved the 2007-2012
Bond Program. This latest
project is funded with $6.6 million from the 2012-2017 Bond
Program.
This project incorporated
turn and acceleration lanes at
the Hamilton Wolfe and Babcock intersection and traffic
signals that match the Medical
Center style were also installed.
New sidewalks and landscaping
were incorporated throughout
the project and gas and water
utilities were also upgraded.
The Medical Center Intersection Improvements Phase
IX project is managed by the
Transportation & Capital Improvements. The design by
Pape-Dawson Engineers was
constructed by E-Z Bel Construction, LLC.

Mission Branch Library Wins 2015
AIA / ALA Library Building Award

of the former Mission Drive-in
Theater, just north of the historic
Mission San Jose and less than
one block west of Mission County
Park and the historic Mission
Reach of the San Antonio River
Walk. The library resides in the
heart of the south-side neighborhood. Since its opening, the Mission Branch has been a catalyst
and model for new development
along the newly formed Roosevelt Avenue Corridor district.
Public input was gathered to
inform the design as well as the
library services offered at the
branch library.

please, traits that will make her easier to train. She has
a smooth black coat with a white chest and cute floppy
ears. She was transferred from Animal Care Services
and now resides at the SAHS. However, Alyssa hopes
that her next move is to her forever home! Come spend

a la diversidad musical y cultural

del sector privado y agencias
gubernamentales para presentar
un ambiente propicio al turismo
que es uno de los recursos más
importantes de la vida económica
de San Antonio y la región.

En la segunda Noche Latina presentada por la NBA, el guardia
italiano Marco Belinelli y el escolta argentino Manu Ginóbili
vistieron playeras con el nombre Los Spurs. Ambos fueron dignos representantes en este tradicional evento en el que además
destacaron aportando puntos en el marcador de 123 a 93 para
derrotar al visitante Nuggets de Denver y celebrar los 50 triunfos

Sebastien de la Cruz, apodado “El Charro de Oro”, en la segunda
Noche Latina de la NBA en el partido Spurs vs. Nuggets de Denver, se encargó de anunciar la alineación titular de “Los Spurs”.
El público lo premió con emotiva ovación. “Para mí fue un honor
haber sido invitado para anunciar la alineación de Los Spurs”,
expresó Cruz, quien en otras ocasiones con éxito ha interpretado
el Himno Nacional en el AT&T Center, casa del pentacampeón.

Durante los eventos de la segunda Noche Latina éne-bé-a, en
la que Los Spurs se anotaron rotunda victoria ante el visitante
equipo Nuggets de Denver (con lo que llegaron a 50 triunfos en
la temporada NBA 2014-15), la dinámica presentadora Iliana Jiménez, representante de la NBA en la Ciudad de México, volvió a
realizar un excelente trabajo en cada promoción en las que animó
el ambiente acompañada por fans, El Coyote y el actor Chuck
Cureau, presentador oficial.
Un aficionado de Los Spurs tuvo la oportunidad de participar en la promoción H-E-B Beach Ball
Mania, en la que ganó la cantidad de $100 y aplausos de los más de 18 mil espectadores.
Las dinámicas chicas de la porra “Los Spurs Silver Dancers”, con su espectacular coreografía,
animaron los tiempos pedidos durante la tradicional Noche Latina de la NBA.

su espectacular estilo de juego.
La popularidad del pentacampeón Spurs sigue atrayendo nuevos

Attagirl serves up ‘hot chicken’ and flavor

Attagirl uses a 12-tap system to
keep craft beer fresh, and plans to
rotate the menu each season.
“We’re not snobs, we have craft
beers but we also cater to someone
who just wants a Bud Light,” Cullum said. “We’re not that joint that
is going to turn up our noses at you.
We’re trying to create a nice little
atmosphere for the neighborhood.”
Attagirl’s building has been
home to many businesses over the
years, including a local grocery
store called “Five G’s.” Cullum and
his team worked hard to restore the
classic white refrigeration showcase that once belonged to the store,
and hope to eventually fill the case
with cold milk and dairy products.
“I want to offer milk because the
‘hot chicken’ is really spicy, but we
can also offer it to people who live
in the neighborhood,” Cullum said.
“We’ll also be offering growlers
and to-go beer and all that good
stuff.”
The restaurant itself is filled with
history, from the diner-style bar and
swivel stools to the retro signs and
pictures throughout the building,
including a portrait of Cullum’s
grandmother that looks over the
open kitchen space.
“This neighborhood is just
changing so much,” Cullum said.
“We’ve come in at a good time, and
we’re proud to be here.”
Cullum’s Attagirl Ice House is
located on the corner of St. Mary’s,
and 119 Kings Ct.
The restaurant is open Sunday to
Thursday from 4 p.m. to midnight,
and from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday
and Saturday. The restaurant will
be closed on Mondays.

Although Chris Cullum’s newest
eatery, Attagirl Ice House, has been
open for less than a week, locals
are already stopping by to try the
crispy, flavorful fried chicken and
great beers on tap.
Adventurous eaters will appreciate Attagirl for being the first
restaurant in San Antonio to bring
Nashville-style ‘hot chicken’ to the
area, which is guaranteed to bring
tears to your eyes.
Cullum keeps a simple approach
to food at all his restaurants, including Attaboy Burgers and Tucker’s
Kozy Korner. Attagirl’s no-frills
menu offers customers fried chicken, cold beer and an assortment of
wines.
“I never want my food to be
too ‘chef-y’ or complicated,” Cullum said. “My grandparents had
a chicken shack in Port Aransas
called ‘The Chicken Coop.’ I
wanted to pay homage to them by
doing something with chicken, so
this is basically taking their recipe
and making it my own.”
According to Cullum, the secret
to flavorful chicken is the marination process. Each batch of chicken
is rubbed with spices before being
coated with buttermilk. A special
mixture of serranos, jalapeños and
Japanese red peppers gives the
chicken that kick of flavor.

“Annie,” it’s like coming home.
Mills is one of the ensemble
players and his plate is full with
the characters he plays in the
production. Five roles in all and
each have a speaking part. Lt.
Ward is the bigger role, because
of the multiple scenes.
“I play many roles. In particular I play Lt. Ward, the cop who
takes Annie back to the orphanage when she gets away,” Mills
explained. “I’m also one of the
senators in the cabinet scene with
president FDR. I play one of the
homeless people in Hooverville.
I play a servant in Warbucks’
mansion. Finally, I play Judge
Louis Brandies who signs the
adoption papers for Annie near
the end of the show.”
Mills is no stranger to San Antonio and the I-10, I-35 corridor.
He has family in both Austin and
Houston. In fact, Jake’s parents
met while both were students at
the University of Texas at Austin. His mom grew up in New
Braunfels and his father was born
and raised in Corpus Christi.
“Soon after I was born, say
within a year, we moved to Pensacola, Florida, to California to
Hawaii,” he said.
“I’ve never lived there too
long, but I visited many a time
because my grandparents are
there. I have an uncle who still
lives in Austin. My mom’s sister
lives in Houston.”
So coming to San Antonio on
this leg of the production’s tour
is sort of like coming home.
He’s been acting professionally for about eight years and he
readily admits that “Annie” is the
biggest thing he’s ever done. It’s
a Broadway national tour and it’s
one of those venues an aspiring
actor hopes to achieve.
“Usually when you’re one
of the principal characters, like
Annie or Daddy Warbucks or
any of those, you just play that
character. You don’t understudy anyone else,” Mills told
La Prensa. “When you’re in the
ensemble you not only have to do
all the parts you’re doing within
the ensemble, but you also have
to understudy other roles.”
Despite the appearance that he
fits in to the cliché, ‘the smell
of the grease paint and roar of
the crowd,’ Mills is well aware
of the surroundings in which he
finds himself.
“Sometime we forget how
lucky we are, because we’ve
been doing Annie since we
started rehearsals in August of
last year so we we’ve been doing this quite a while,” he said.
“Actually it was last week where
I realized, it was one of those
moments where the audience
was applauding at the end where
I just had to say, Man I’m pretty
lucky.”
Why not feeling lucky? “Annie,” Mills said, is one of those
top ones for him. He gets to
work with amazing people, like
director Martin Charnin, working
with all the original creators. The
set is designed by a Tony Award
winning designer.
Mills admits he’s not all that,
because there is a bit of dancing
and dance is not his forte. Yet
being in this business, he said, he
had to learn and it’s a part of it if
he wants to get cast in particular
shows.
“I try to make sure my singing
and my acting are super strong,
so that they can maybe forgive
my dancing every once in a
while,” he said.
“Annie” opens at the Majestic
Theater Tuesday night, April 14
and continues through Sunday
April 19.
Cannot wait to hear, “The
sun’ll come out tomorrow, bet
your bottom dollar, that tomorrow, there’ll be sun!”
For the second year, the Crawfish
Festival of New Braunfels will be
the place to be if you love crawfish
— or if you just love good entertainment and good family fun. The
festival, set for Saturday, April 25
at the Comal County Fairgrounds
will feature three stages with live
music, an improved children’s
area, Battle of the Roux Gumbo
Cook-off, a 5K Crawdaddy Dash,
a craft market and, for those who
may not have an acquired taste for
the crawly creatures, a wide variety
of mouth-watering morsels that will
tempt less seasoned palates.
Merchandise booths will include
arts and crafts, jewelry, handmade
crafts, woodwork items and numerous other specialty pieces for
purchase.
Ben Jones, director of the Hospitality and Visitors Association of
New Braunfels, had been having
a crawfish festival at his home for
years. After his wife said no to the
loads of tour buses pulling up to her
front door, Jones moved the increasingly popular event to the Comal
County Fairgrounds last year. Jones
is back for a second year with much
more to offer festival patrons.
“I had been doing crawfish events
for 14 years at our home,” Jones
said. “In 2013, it grew so large
that we had a shuttle service taking guests to and from our event.
After that, my wife told me that she
wanted her house back.”
For cooks who want to strut their
culinary talents for all to see, the
Battle of the Roux puts “foodie”
skills to the test. This event has a
$100 registration fee to enter. Judging is at 2 p.m.
Festival fun features the new
Amazon Zip Line, one hundred
feet of fast and furious flight seventy feet in the air. Go wild on the
Screamin’ Demon Gyro Wheel or
put your animal instincts to the test
in the Hamster Wheel. For the little
ones, a giant Ferris Wheel, swings
and a bungee trampoline will keep

A 5K Crawdaddy Dash beckons
runners with a 9 a.m. start time the
day of the festival. Those with a
penchant for putting their best foot
forward can work up an appetite
during the dash and have energy
to spare for boot scooting, a Cajun
Waltz or Zydeco two-steppin’.
Little Texas, dubbed “the hardest working band in the country”
playing some 300 shows a year,
will take the Bud Light Main Stage
at 8 p.m. The Grammy-nominated
band has sold more than 7 million
albums and is releasing a new CD
just before their performance at the
Crawfish Festival.
Casey Donahew, a Burleson native with a solid base of loyal fans
who attend his shows, performs at
10 p.m. Donahew has topped the
Texas music charts several times
and his latest CD called “Double
Wide Dreams” may put him back
there.
Musical acts performing on the
Sysco Stage throughout the day
include Zydeco band Jean-Pierre
and the Zydeco Angels, Cajun
band Gumbo CeSoir and Dr. Zog,
a band that plays a variety of musical styles.
New this year, the ValMark
Chevrolet Americana Hall features
Texas singer/songwriter Kurt Reece
and the soulful sounds of Texan
Mike Ryan bringing his “Bad
Reputation” to festival crowds in
the afternoon.
The festival runs from 11 a.m.
to 11 p.m. at the Comal County
Fairgrounds, 701 Common Street,
in New Braunfels. General admission tickets are $10 pre-sale online
only and $15 at the door before 5
p.m. After 5 p.m. tickets are $20.
Ages 12 and under are free. The
ticket price covers entry and entertainment only.
North by Northwest Vista
Celebration of Live Music

Northwest Vista College (NVC)
hosts its first annual NXNVC
(North by Northwest Vista) music
festival. Each evening features
different performance groups and
an exciting program of music. The
line-up features students, faculty,
and visiting artists. Ticket proceeds benefit scholarships.
To kick off the week’s festivities, a fundraiser reception will be
held on Monday, April 13, from
6:30-7:30 p.m. Bombay Salsa Co.
food truck will be on hand to sell
delicious Indian/Mexican fusion
items and will donate 15% of the
proceeds to music scholarships.
Following the food truck, the
NVC Faculty Jazz ensemble will
perform in the Palmetto theater
recital hall. The faculty ensemble
is comprised of Katchie Cartwright, Al Gomez, Morgan King,
Aaron Prado, Jim Kalson, Zlatan

Cumberbatch’s Sherlock
nominated for TV BAFTA
EFE - Benedict Cumberbatch
is the leading candidate for the
Leading Actor Award for his
role in “Sherlock,” according to
the list of nominees released on
Wednesday by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts,
or BAFTA.
The award will be presented
on May 10, when Cumberbatch
will compete with fellow actors
Toby Jones for his role in “Marvellous,” James Nesbitt for “The
Missing” and Jason Watkins for
“The Lost Honor of Christopher
Jefferies.”
This is Cumberbatch’s sixth
time being nominated for the
award, the third for his role in
the BBC series “Sherlock,” based
on the literary detective Sherlock
Holmes, while he was also nominated for the Oscar earlier in the
year for his portrayal of Alan
Turing in “The Imitation Game.”
“The Missing” series tells the
story of a family trip gone awry
when the child of a couple get lost
in the streets of Paris, while “The

‘Pinocchio’ to get live-action facelift
EFE - Disney Studios continues the trend of modernizing
animated classics through liveaction with ‘Pinocchio’, the next
character to get a facelift.
Variety magazine revealed
online Wednesday that Disney is
developing a live-action version
with Peter Hedges working on a
script inspired by classic.
‘Pinocchio’ premiered in
1940.
The animated film was based
on the children’s book by Carlo
Collodi published in 1883, about
a wooden puppet that comes to
life after the carpenter Geppetto
gives it shape in his workshop.
The original ‘Pinocchio’ was
Disney’s second animated feature film after ‘Snow White and
the Seven Dwarfs’ (1937).
Hedges wrote screenplays for
films including ‘What’s Eating
Gilbert Grape’, ‘A Map of the
World’ and ‘About a Boy’.
He has also directed ‘Pieces
of April’, ‘Dan in Real Life’
and ‘The Odd Life of Timothy
Green’ all based on his own
scripts.
This latest project from Disney follows news that the studio
is considering other live-action
re-makes from its collection of
animated classics, including
‘Mulan’, ‘Winnie the Pooh’,
‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘The
Jungle Book’ and ‘Dumbo’.
The decision follows the great
box office successes of animations like ‘Alice in Wonderland’
- the second part of which is
due in 2016 -, ‘Maleficent’ and
‘Cinderella’.

Sanz lanzará su próximo álbum

Ismael Cala publicará su tercer
libro: “El secreto del bambú”

La editorial HarperCollins Español publicará “El secreto del bambú”, el tercer libro de Ismael Cala.
El libro es una fábula inspiracional sobre liderazgo y transformación
personal.
De acuerdo a boletín de prensa, la
historia se centra en una historia del
año 2085, y aborda “los ideales y el
modo de vida de una villa ecológica
de la Amazonía peruana, creada y
sustentada en la fortaleza y la flexibilidad del bambú”.
“La fábula se basa en el descubrimiento del secreto que Huáscar,
el jefe de la villa, le había escondido
a su hija menor y que trascenderá en
la vida de la pequeña y de todas las
personas de la comunidad”.
Cala, quien es presentador del
programa CALA en CNN en Español, ha publicado los libros “El poder
de escuchar” (2013) y “Un buen hijo
de P...” (2014).
El objetivo de sus libros es transformar la manera en que vemos
nuestras vidas. “Lo más importante
en la vida no es precisamente lo

por un tiempo con un chavito y
qué. Que los hombres no hacen

la obsesión por ese chavito que
no vale la pena.
Hay tanto pescado en el mar,
solo tienes que buscar y cuando
digo buscar, me refiero a tomar tu
tiempo para conocer a la persona
y no brincar luego a la cama. De
esos hay muchos.
Los que te propongo son los que
te respetan y buscan a la mujer
para compartir los buenos tiempos
tanto como los malos, pero buenos
y sanos. Ojalá que me entiendas.

Culture’s obsession with
deceased artists going too far?

It’s been an ironic concept that
has been around for generations
where artists of all types who spend
their lives “trying to make it” gain
more recognition after they have
passed away.
Early example can include
painter Vincent Van Gogh, who
struggles his entire life battling
mental disorders trying to achieve
greatness who did not sell a single
painting until after he passed away
and is a house hold name ‘til this
day.
Earlier this week, two different stories surfaced about two
deceased musicians who have
managed to stay extremely relevant
in this day and age despite passing
away more than a decade ago.
The first being an interview
Frances Bean Cobain did with
Rolling Stone magazine about an
upcoming documentary about her
father, the late Kurt Cobain, front
man of Nirvana. It was the first
time she has spoken out about her
father.
“Even if I was in a car and had
the radio on, there’s my dad. He’s
larger than life and our culture is
obsessed with dead musicians. We
love to put them on a pedestal. If
Kurt had just been another guy
who abandoned his family in the
most awful way possible . . . But
he wasn’t. He inspired people to
put him on a pedestal, to become
St. Kurt. He became even bigger
after he died than he was when
he was alive,” she had said in the
interview.

Another example is that this
week, family of the late Tejano
singer Selena announced that they
are in the works of a Selena hologram that is set to tour in 2018 titled
“Selena the One”. While there are a
few kinks to work out still to make
the hologram more “lifelike” the
family seems adamant on the idea,
releasing the following statement
on Facebook:
“Acrovirt, LLC announces the
launch of Selena The One, the
development of a walking, talking,
singing, and dancing, digital embodiment of iconic singer, Selena.
Acrovirt is working in collaboration with Selena’s immediate
family and cutting-edge scientists
to enable new productions for her
many fans.”
Both stories compare and contrast both sides of our culture’s
obsession with artists that have
passed away. On one side we
have Frances, who is not fond of
it whatsoever and the impact it had
on her childhood and then we have
the Quintanillas who feel that this
is a great way for their daughter’s
memory to live on.
Of course the first debut of a
hologram performance of a dead
artist is when Tupac took the stage
at Coachella in 2012. While the
crowd went wild and everyone was
stunned to see the deceased rapper
perform, music industry moguls
were rubbing their hands together
at this new untapped concept.
While Selena culture is still
highly relevant, especially here in
San Antonio, and though we all
miss her, we must ask ourselves
where we need to draw the line.
Is our culture that obsessed with
instant gratification to the point that
we have to start bringing people
back from the dead?
Is it not wrong to an extent to
make someone immortal and weird
watching live action memories
performing on stage?
This is one of the creepiest trends
to come out of our technological
advances. Why can’t we just enjoy
things for what they were, cherish
the memories and just let them go?
