Christ the King Sunday November 23, 2014 When the Son of Man comes in glory, may we be among those who have fed the hungry, welcomed the stranger, and clothed the naked. For Jesus tells us clearly, that it is those who have demonstrated good stewardship by sharing their gifts with the less fortunate who will receive God’s blessing and inherit the kingdom. From the Pastor’s Desk: The Oath of Supremacy In November of 1534 the English parliament enacted the piece of legislation in which King Henry VIII was named Supreme Governor of the Church of England. This meant that the leadership of the Church no longer looked to the Pope for guidance, but were forced to take an oath of allegiance to the king. All people who held public or church office were required to swear to this and failure to do so would be considered treasonous. St. Thomas More fell foul of this and so was martyred for his allegiance to the Pope. What was interesting to me about this claim to Supremacy was that it was based on the “Divine Right of Kings.” In essence, kings were thought to have a direct line to heaven and so could not be held accountable to another authority. To this day the Monarch of England is the head of the church there. Prior to the break from Rome, King Henry had been declared “Defender of the Faith” because of an article he wrote accusing Martin Luther of heresy. Recall that Luther made known his thesis in 1517. In all of this you might say that the “end justifies the means.” The Act of Supremacy was a means to get his marriage annulled to Catherine of Aragon. He had no male heir by her and next wanted to marry Anne Boleyn, the second of his 6 marriages. Keep in mind that King Henry had to get a dispensation from Rome to marry Catherine in the first instance because she had already been married to his brother. Prince Arthur and Catherine’s marriage at 15 and 14-years respectively had lasted only five months when he died. After Arthur’s death his father, King Henry VII, wanted to marry Catherine but the Queen of Spain, Isabella, was horrified and prevented it. In the application of the principle “the end justifies the means” King Henry took the whole Catholic Church of England and made it accountable solely to him. In his search for a male heir it was “anything goes.” The principle is a flawed one. Can I kill someone so that I can buy their house? Each act of itself has its own moral state and must be measured by itself even if there is a good benefit that accrues from it. Fr. Next will come the membrane roof installation over the towers and Tyvek (weatherproofing) over the sheathing. The installation of the laminated ceiling beams(trusses) began this past week. The tower domes are scheduled to be installed in December. We need to keep an eye on the site, since we have had intruders on several occasions. Permanent power is scheduled for early December and the natural gas installation should occur this month. As our New Church is growing on 15th Street, it would be a good time to purchase a brick to place at the entrance to honor our loved ones! Desde el escritorio del Pastor: El Juramento de Supremacía En noviembre de 1534 el Parlamento Inglés promulgó la parte de la legislación en la que el rey Enrique VIII fue nombrado Gobernador Supremo de la Iglesia de Inglaterra. Esto significaba que en el liderazgo de la Iglesia ya no se veía al Papa como guía, mas se vieron obligados a tomar un juramento de lealtad al rey. Todas las personas que ocupaban cargos públicos o en la iglesia estaban obligados a jurar a esto y el no hacerlo sería considerado traicion. Santo Tomás Moro fue víctima de esto y fue martirizado por su lealtad al Papa. Lo que me parece a mi interesante acerca de esta pretensión de la supremacía, era que se basaba en el "derecho divino de los reyes."En esencia, se pensaba que los reyes tenian una línea directa al cielo por lo cual no podían rendir cuentas a otra autoridad. Hasta el día de hoy el Rey de Inglaterra es la cabeza de la iglesia allí. Antes de romper lazos con Roma, el rey Enrique había sido declarado "Defensor de la Fe", debido a un artículo que escribió acusando a Martín Lutero de herejía. Recordemos que Lutero dio a conocer su tesis en 1517. Aquí cabria decir que "el fin justifica los medios." El Acta de Supremacía fue un medio para conseguir que su matrimonio con Catalina de Aragón fuese anulado. Él no tenía heredero varón a su lado y al lado quería casarse con Ana Bolena, la segunda de sus seis matrimonios. Tome también en cuenta que el rey Enrique tuvo que obtener una dispensa de Roma para poder casarse con Catalina, en primera instancia, porque ella ya había sido casado con su hermano, el príncipe Arturo a la edad de entre 15 y 14 años, respectivamente, este matrimonio solo había durado cinco meses cuando el príncipe Arturo murió. Es una de las fiestas más importantes del calendario litúrgico, porque celebramos que Cristo es el Rey del universo. Su Reino es el Reino de la verdad y la vida, de la santidad y la gracia, de la justicia, del amor y la paz. Un poco de historia: La fiesta de Cristo Rey fue instaurada por el Papa Pío XI el 11 de Marzo de 1925. El Papa quiso motivar a los católicos a reconocer en público que el mandatario de la Iglesia es Cristo Rey. Posteriormente se movió la fecha de la celebración dándole un nuevo sentido. Al cerrar el año litúrgico con esta fiesta se quiso resaltar la importancia de Cristo como centro de toda la historia universal. Es el alfa y el omega, el principio y el fin. Cristo reina en las personas con su mensaje de amor, justicia y servicio. El Reino de Cristo es eterno y universal, es decir, para siempre y para todos los hombres. Con la fiesta de Cristo Rey se concluye el año litúrgico. Esta fiesta tiene un sentido escatólogico pues celebramos a Cristo como Rey de todo el universo. Sabemos que el Reino de Cristo ya ha comenzado, pues se hizo presente en la tierra a partir de su venida al mundo hace casi dos mil años, pero Cristo no reinará definitivamente sobre todos los hombres hasta que vuelva al mundo con toda su gloria al final de los tiempos, en la Parusía.
