Our students have gained a great deal of knowledge in all aspects of the curriculum. They have also had greater involvement in many aspects of their learning, which has provided them with a “voice” and a deeper sense of ownership. We have participated in many activities involving global citizenship this past year. It is so important to be aware of the world around us and get involved, wherever possible. École Assiniboine students should be so proud of their efforts and commitment to helping others, as they truly have made the world a better place! Thank you for supporting all of our projects this year. École Assiniboine Page 2 École Assiniboine Class Placement Process At École Assiniboine, the creation of balanced classes is fundamental in supporting the instructional program and diverse needs of all the learners within the classroom setting. The class creation process is a complex one involving the gathering of information about student needs and the making of collaborative decisions about students’ placement in classes. The purpose of the Class Placement Process is to maximize the learning and teaching opportunities for all students and teachers by constructing balanced classes. Every effort is made to minimize the potential for negative student interactions. Collaborative staff teams - classroom teachers, support teachers (resource, music, phys. ed., counselor) and administrator make up the team. Using professional judgment, they strive to construct classes that are heterogeneous (mixed) and balanced in composition. The following criteria are used to establish balanced classes: Student performance Our knowledge of social interactions and dynamics between individual students and group of students, including friendships in the school context Placement of students new to École Assiniboine Male / female ratio Approximately equal class sizes at any grade level Students with special needs While no class group will be seen to be perfect by everyone, it is essential to the formation of the best possible balanced learning group that the school team be allowed to operate for the benefit of the majority of students. Decisions regarding class formation rest with the school. Parents can assist the process by: Helping their children to understand the importance and complexity of class formation. Supporting the placements that have been made. Parents are encouraged to trust in the decisions made by the school. **Class placements for 2015–2016 will be included on your child’s final report card.** All questions regarding class placement should be directed to Mme Hussey. École Assiniboine Page 5 Coaching for Confidence Internet-based program to help parents help children with difficulty with anxiety (excessive fearfulness, worry, or shyness). Is your 4 to 12 year old child more shy or fearful than other children of the same age? Shyness and anxiety are normal emotions. Some children, however, are much more shy or fearful than the average child. Anxiety may interfere with their enjoyment of school, activities with other children, new experiences (swimming lessons or sports), and their development of independence and confidence. Shyness and anxiety may also slow learning at school. If you think that your child is more anxious (fearful, worried or shy) than most other children of the same age, you may be interested in Coaching for Confidence a web-based program developed for parents of children with anxiety by researchers at the University of Manitoba.
