OPEN NIGHT
th
Education Week is coming up very quickly indeed. Our Open Night is on Monday 18 May from
4.30 – 7.00pm. We invite all families, friends and community to come and see your child’s work and
find out more about our school.
Our students always look forward to Open Night where they can show off their school and their work
to friends and family. It is also a great time for people to catch up with friends in the community! We
also enjoy seeing past students and families.
Some of the activities you may enjoy on the night are Highland Dancing, our Super Singers, Holly’s
String Group, the Book Fair, some tastings from our garden and canteen, and green tea ice-cream
from our Japanese program.
I hope to see you all there.
Don’t forget to visit the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Trolley in the foyer, where we are
selling jams and relishes made at the program.
Open Night begins at 4.30pm, when we open the classroom doors. We are expecting students to go
to their homes before they come back for the Open evening. Teachers will be on yard duty as usual
from 3.30 – 3.45pm. After that there will not be any supervision in the school yard or play
equipment. We will be informing the students that they do need to leave the school grounds by
3.45pm.
EDUCATION WEEK
During Education Week this year we will be part of a display of local primary schools at Croydon
Central Shopping Centre. Please drop by and see our display and the wonderful work of our
students.
PIZZA & SOFTDRINK NIGHT
It was great seeing everybody at the Pizza & Softdrink night. It’s always a bit of a shock to see our
previous year’s Year 6s come back to visit the school as Year 7s. My how they grow so quickly!
The purpose of the Pizza & Softdrink night is for our current Grade 6s and our previous year’s Grade
6s to get together and discuss the highlights and issues of transitioning to secondary school. We do
this in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying pizza and softdrink. The evening is organised by our current
Grade 6s, who send out invitations and organise the activities. Of course, the whole evening is
supervised by our wonderful teachers.

SAKG is selling a selection of home-made jams and chutneys. New additions to the

delicious, reasonably priced and made in our kitchen!

GRADE 3/4 GUEST SPEAKER
For their Challenge Based Learning, students are looking at the factors that make up, and shape, an identity. Mr.
Selimanovic was a very welcomed guest speaker today, who shared his experience of immigrating to Australia.
Because of the war, his family left Bosnia when he was 13. It was a very long journey through many countries,
before they could get a Visa to come to Australia. It was difficult to be a refugee, as they had to leave their friends,
home, language and culture behind. It was snowing when they left Bosnia, but when they arrived in January, it was
35 degree heat – very different! At the time, all the family wanted to see, was a kangaroo! Mr. Selimanovic told the
students that even though Australia is very beautiful, you do still miss your own country. Since living here, their
family has embraced many new customs, one being Christmas, but they have also kept their traditional Republic
Day and May Day as family celebrations. There are many
similarities and differences between the two countries. For
instance, where his family grew up, there were smaller shops
selling specific products like bread. If you didn’t get to the shop on
time, there wouldn’t be any more bread to buy! It was very different
for their family to see a huge supermarket like Coles that had rows
and rows of different foods for sale.
The Selimanovic family loves Australia and their life here; they can
enjoy both cultures, and told the students how lucky they are to live
in a country like this. They are proud of their origins and how this
has shaped the identity of their family. We would like to thank Mr.
Selimanovic for his very interesting and heart-warming story
today.

Before School / After School Care Program
Term 2 - Week 5 - 14th May 2015
Program Update
Xin chào! This means ‘Hello’ in Vietnamese.
Well, it seems as though winter is well and truly upon us! Just a kind reminder that children
need to have their jumpers/windcheaters with them at before and after school cares as these
are generally the coldest times of the day.
Despite the weather, we have all been enjoying some outdoor play either on the playground,
basketball courts, or in our under cover area just outside the OSHClub room. Many games have
involved AFL, basketball, tiggy, hopscotch, and downball. Other outdoor activities have been
scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, and paper plane flying competitions.
Indoor play has seen children engaging collaboratively with construction projects involving Lego,
Jenga, Scrabble, Twister, and various art and craft activities.
For Open Night next Monday, we will be available for any questions or enquiries; please come
by and say hello!
Kind Regards,
Jeanette Lea, Kalli Boag, Samantha Lawrence, Wendy Reid.

Nutrition and Healthy Eating Tips
Sweet treats
While it’s totally okay to have some non-nutritious foods in anyone’s diet an Australian food survey completed in
2008/2009 showed that adults get nearly 36% of their energy from ‘discretionary’ foods and kids got nearly 41% of
their kilojoules or energy from these non-essential foods. We are definitely not missing out!
Discretionary foods are those that are high in sugar or saturated fat or both and range from honey and jam to
cakes, chips and pizza.
It’s about balance because banning all these discretionary foods leads to kids who seek them out more often.
Teaching your children that discretionary foods are sometimes foods not everyday foods and allowing the
lunchbox to reflect this is the healthiest option.
Instead of using chips, sweet biscuits or chocolate on a daily basis try alternating with wholemeal or grainy biscuits
with topping, cheese cubes and mini tomatoes, popcorn, rice crackers and hommus, a slice of raisin bread/toast or
tub of yoghurt.
