The 3/4 L Guinea Pigs deliver their verdict on the new Canteen menu item! It's hard to find a new menu item when we already have a fantastic selection on offer. We supply food from each of the required colour groups ~ Green, Amber and Red (A requirement from the Australian Canteen Association). Last term I came up with a dish and decided to ask 3/4L to be my Guinea Pigs and tell me what they thought. From there l tweaked it and asked them to taste the new version; it was a success….Yay!.. The new menu item is Macaroni Cheese with Vegetables and Bacon. Here is what some of the students had to say: I had the new Macaroni and Cheese, it was creamy and delicious! – Emma I loved the texture of it, it was delicious, I recommend it and give it 10 out of 10! – Bella It was delicious; all the ingredients mix together so well. It was very tasty; I could have had heaps more! – Lily I would love to have it in my lunch every day, it was so YUM!!! – Lochston. JO O’CALLAGHAN – CANTEEN MANAGER Dear Teachers, Parents and Children, In Grade 5/6 last term we were exploring different issues within our C.B.L unit of 'Power'. The issue that I chose to investigate and help was a School in Vanuatu as they were hit by a cyclone, which caused extensive damage. To help, I decided to collect worksheets and books. I have visited each classroom and collected some worksheets, however now I need your help! The children at Fresh Wota Bilingual School in Vanuatu don't have a library or a reading corner like we are so lucky to have. I would really like to help them to have a reading corner in every classroom. To do this I need to collect books - lots of books! So, if you have any old or no longer wanted books that you are wondering what to do with, then please consider donating them to these children. There will be a box in 5/6D's classroom labelled PROGRESS PIKININI for you to put any books in. My target is to collect 100 books by the end of this term. Thankyou so much for your help ASHLEIGH – 5/6D 5 WORKING BEE THANKS Many thanks to the following families for their assistance during last weekend’s working bee: Angus, BuyskesAbrahams, Cray, Crossman, Dong, Draffin, Gregson, Halse, Hodgkin, Ingram, Liu, Rojas, Stevenson, Taylor, Zhang, Landi and Kozub, along with their mini-helpers; Rebecca, Jonty, Jack & Samantha, Bobby & Ray, Eleanor, Madeline & Charli, Ruby & Blake, Olivia, Kaiya & Tahlia, Alina, Annie, Natasha, Levi Joy, Haylee, Katia and Alexey. In ‘pleasingly pleasant’ conditions, we managed to stay on top of a few ongoing projects as well as to complete a few stand-alone jobs. 'Boxes ticked' included: in-ground drains around the high side of the school grounds were checked and cleared as necessary, soft-fall was re-spread to priority areas (in all playgrounds) sand-pits were rejuvenated, all of the school’s play-surfaces and pathways were swept or blown-clear of fallen sticks and leaves timber retaining structures at (all of): the synthetic basketball courts and ‘below’ the senior playground continue to be repaired and extended, (now defunct) timber retaining structures ‘above’ the Prep classrooms have been reclaimed to use in more purposeful areas around the school, the garden beds at the front of the school were weeded – as was the Japanese Garden, many of the garden beds along the low side of the school were mulched, and both the boiler room and shipping container were cleared of about a decade-worth of ‘debris’! We would like to extend a huge thank you to every family who participates at our working bees, as we simply could not keep our huge grounds looking as pleasant as they are without you. And, as always, we would also like to say a massive thank you to Ted (and Nathan) Dugdale who - along with Steve Harvey and Michael Raftopoulos (and Katie) - organise the jobs that need doing and (most importantly) make sure the BBQ is ready for hungry workers! Of course, our thoughts are also with Bryan Bennett who is currently ‘laid-up’. As a mainstay of, and driving force behind, Kalinda’s Facilities Committee, Bryan was certainly missed last weekend. If you are new to the school or have not yet filled out the working bee slip to indicate your date of preference, please do so through the office. Many hands make light work and it’s always a great opportunity to meet other parents and for your children to get together. THE NEXT WORKING BEE IS ON SATURDAY 30 May from 10:00am - 12:00noon. See you there! STEVE HARVEY FACILITIES MANAGER Art Room Each morning before school, the Art Room is buzzing with activity as my monitors and helpers set up for the day. It’s important to make sure the afternoon tea snack provides some protein to deal with the hunger and some carbohydrate to provide ongoing energy for after school activities. The trap that might occur here is they are so hungry they eat too much or the snacking continues over a long period of time and they are not hungry for dinner. This is obviously not helpful and can eventually impact body weight. The balance between satisfying hunger and over eating is important and may require some boundaries being set- the aim is to remove hunger but be feeling hungry again for dinner time. Some good after school snack ideas include: Glass of milk (flavoured is okay), tub of yoghurt, custard or smoothie Plus- either piece of fruit, or dry biscuits with topping (cheese, dip, tomato, avocado, peanut butter), half to one sandwich depending on age of child and how active they are, pikelets, popcorn or occasionally a sweet treat.
