FOUNDATION 2016 INFORMATION NIGHT
It was terrific to see so many people at our Foundation Information Night on Monday night.
Following the evening we have had several tours of the school by prospective parents for 2016. I do
encourage our established parents with children coming in 2016 to the school to fill out your

Please remind family and friends who are looking for schools next year that we do run personal tours
of the school. Please as them to ring the office to book a tour.
OPEN NIGHT

Education Week is coming up very quickly indeed. Our Open Night is Monday 18 May from 4.30 –
7.00pm. We invite all families, friends and community to come and see your child’s work and find

Our students always look forward to Open Night where they can show off their school and their work
to friends and family. It is also a great time for people to catch up with friends in the community! We
also enjoy seeing past students and families.
Some of the activities you may enjoy on the night are Highland Dancing, our Super Singers, Holly’s
String Group, the Book Fair, some tastings from our garden and canteen, and green tea ice-cream
from our Japanese program.
I hope to see you all there.

SAKG GARDEN DONATIONS
If there is anyone who would like to clean out their spare pots
section, Kelly would love some extra-large terracotta, half-barrels,
or plastic pots for the Stephanie Alexander Garden. Please leave
at the office.
SAKG is selling a selection of home-made jams and chutneys. New additions to the
trolley are tomato relish and raspberry jam. These are on display and can be
purchased at the office. Please have a look next time you are going past. They are
delicious, reasonably priced and made in our kitchen!
Any donations of 250gm jars, with lids, would be much appreciated (and even better if
labels are removed).

The Guinea Pigs Speak!
Newsflash! The 3/4 L Guinea Pigs deliver their verdict on the new Canteen menu item!
It's hard to find a new menu item when we already have a fantastic selection on offer. We supply food from each of
the required colour groups ~ Green, Amber and Red (A requirement from the Australian Canteen Association).
Last term I came up with a dish and decided to ask 3/4L to be my Guinea Pigs and tell me what they thought.
From there l tweaked it and asked them to taste the new version; it was a success….Yay!.. The new menu item is
Macaroni Cheese with Vegetables and Bacon. Here is what some of the students had to say:




I had the new Macaroni and Cheese, it was creamy and delicious! – Emma
I loved the texture of it, it was delicious, I recommend it and give it 10 out of 10! – Bella
It was delicious; all the ingredients mix together so well. It was very tasty; I could have had heaps more! – Lily
I would love to have it in my lunch every day, it was so YUM!!! – Lochston.

Dear Teachers, Parents and Children,
In Grade 5/6 last term we were exploring different issues within our C.B.L unit of 'Power'. The issue
that I chose to investigate and help was a School in Vanuatu as they were hit by a cyclone, which
caused extensive damage. To help, I decided to collect worksheets and books. I have visited each
classroom and collected some worksheets, however now I need your help!
The children at Fresh Wota Bilingual School in Vanuatu don't have a library or a reading corner like
we are so lucky to have. I would really like to help them to have a reading corner in every
classroom. To do this I need to collect books - lots of books! So, if you have any old or no longer
wanted books that you are wondering what to do with, then please consider donating them to these
children. There will be a box in 5/6D's classroom labelled PROGRESS PIKININI for you to put any
books in. My target is to collect 100 books by the end of this term.
Thankyou so much for your help

WORKING BEE THANKS
Many thanks to the following families for their assistance during last weekend’s working bee: Angus, BuyskesAbrahams, Cray, Crossman, Dong, Draffin, Gregson, Halse, Hodgkin, Ingram, Liu, Rojas, Stevenson, Taylor,
Zhang, Landi and Kozub, along with their mini-helpers; Rebecca, Jonty, Jack & Samantha, Bobby & Ray, Eleanor,
Madeline & Charli, Ruby & Blake, Olivia, Kaiya & Tahlia, Alina, Annie, Natasha, Levi Joy, Haylee, Katia and Alexey.
In ‘pleasingly pleasant’ conditions, we managed to stay on top of a few ongoing projects as well as to complete a
few stand-alone jobs. 'Boxes ticked' included:









in-ground drains around the high side of the school grounds were checked and cleared as necessary,
soft-fall was re-spread to priority areas (in all playgrounds)
sand-pits were rejuvenated,
all of the school’s play-surfaces and pathways were swept or blown-clear of fallen sticks and leaves
timber retaining structures at (all of): the synthetic basketball courts and ‘below’ the senior playground continue to be repaired and extended,
(now defunct) timber retaining structures ‘above’ the Prep classrooms have been reclaimed to use in
more purposeful areas around the school,
the garden beds at the front of the school were weeded – as was the Japanese Garden,
many of the garden beds along the low side of the school were mulched, and
both the boiler room and shipping container were cleared of about a decade-worth of ‘debris’!
We would like to extend a huge thank you to every family who participates at our working bees, as we simply could
not keep our huge grounds looking as pleasant as they are without you. And, as always, we would also like to say
a massive thank you to Ted (and Nathan) Dugdale who - along with Steve Harvey and Michael Raftopoulos (and
Katie) - organise the jobs that need doing and (most importantly) make sure the BBQ is ready for hungry workers!
Of course, our thoughts are also with Bryan Bennett who is currently ‘laid-up’. As a mainstay of, and driving force
behind, Kalinda’s Facilities Committee, Bryan was certainly missed last weekend.
If you are new to the school or have not yet filled out the working bee slip to indicate your date of preference,
please do so through the office. Many hands make light work and it’s always a great opportunity to meet other
parents and for your children to get together.
THE NEXT WORKING BEE IS ON SATURDAY 30 May from 10:00am - 12:00noon.
See you there!

Art Room
Each morning before school, the Art Room is buzzing with activity
as my monitors and helpers set up for the day. They unpack the
racks, put down chairs, put out materials, clean the sinks, sharpen
pencils and many other preparation jobs. They also like to sing
along to the radio! It’s like The Voice Kids in there some mornings.
The official Art Monitors for this year are Eric Z., Shaylee G., Macy

Before School / After School Care Program
Term 2 - Week 4 - 7th May 2015
Program Update
Ni Sa Bula! This means “good afternoon/evening” in Fijian.
Welcome to week 4 of Kalinda Primary School’s OSHClub! We hope everyone has been having a
great week so far.
We have all had the great fortune of meeting even more new children enrolling in our service
for both before and after school care. We have all been so pleased that everyone is making
our new members feel welcome during their first few days. Well done everyone!
How wild and woolly the weather has been lately! Many children have been misplacing their
jumpers and windcheaters; if you have been to OSHClub recently and are missing your jumper
or windcheater, please come in and look in our lost property tub. Also, if we find any missing
clothing or other property whilst we are in the playground we usually bring it inside so even if
you don’t attend OSHClub please come in and have a look through our lost property!
Our art and craft theme for this week is “All About Mum”. So if you still need to make mum a
Mother’s Day card or a special box to place lots of goodies in, feel free to let your creative juices
flow during the rest of this week!
So to all of the mums at Kalinda Primary School…
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
Kind Regards,

Nutrition and Healthy Eating Tips
Getting the afternoon snack right for your kids:
When the kids get home from school it’s a time they are likely to be really hungry. It’s important to make sure the
afternoon tea snack provides some protein to deal with the hunger and some carbohydrate to provide ongoing
energy for after school activities.
The trap that might occur here is they are so hungry they eat too much or the snacking continues over a long
period of time and they are not hungry for dinner. This is obviously not helpful and can eventually impact body
weight. The balance between satisfying hunger and over eating is important and may require some boundaries
being set- the aim is to remove hunger but be feeling hungry again for dinner time.
Some good after school snack ideas include:
Glass of milk (flavoured is okay), tub of yoghurt, custard or smoothie
Plus- either piece of fruit, or dry biscuits with topping (cheese, dip, tomato, avocado, peanut butter), half to one
sandwich depending on age of child and how active they are, pikelets, popcorn or occasionally a sweet treat.
