Koroit & District PS Newsletter Term 2 Week 1 - Newsletter Date: 17 April 2015 School Agreements • • • • • Mutual Respect Attentive Listening Appreciations and not Put Downs Right to Pass Personal Best TERM Dates for 2015 Term 2: 13 April to 26 June Term 3: 13 July to 18 September Term 4: 5 October to 18 December MENTOR FOCUS Cyberbullying The internet lets us watch videos, play all kinds of games and find out interesting stuff. But sometimes people can be mean on the internet, just like some people are mean in real life. If someone is being mean to you while you are on the internet or on a mobile phone 1. Tell someone about it. Tell one of these people: your mum or dad, your teacher, an aunty, an uncle, a grandparent, your brother, your sister or a friend. Keep telling them until they help. 2. Don’t answer any of their mean comments. Save them and show them to a parent or teacher 3. Get a parent or teacher to help you block them so they can’t contact you any more 4. Report them to the game/ video host so they get blocked 5. Remember it isn’t your fault if someone is mean online. Nobody should be bullied From The Principal It is so lovely to be back to this wonderful school and community. I have kept up to date with the happenings at the school and know that you have been in good hands while I was in an acting role for the region. My thanks to Hayley Hoy for accepting the Principal role at such short notice and leading the school so well. Thanks also to all the staff who stepped up to support Hayley and especially to Rebecca Janes for agreeing to teach the 5/6 class. They have been fortunate to have such a dedicated and capable young teacher in this role. Thanks too to Rebecca Beard for her work in PE and classroom support. We wish her well in her singing career. I have enjoyed meeting young Oscar with his proud parents Rachael and Mat, and now we are excited as we wait the arrival of the latest Farrelly child. Farewell to Nicole and thank you for all that you have done for all the students, families and staff of Koroit and District PS. We wish you well and will miss you. Josie Balash-Edney will take up some of the roles managed by Nicole. We will keep you posted on this. ANZAC day and the acknowledgement of the 100 years since the Gallipoli battle, is a national focus and this is also the case at our school. While we do not intend to glorify war, it is important that we acknowledge the passion, commitment and sacrifices made in the effort to create the best opportunities for our people 100 years ago and to also think about how we can find more positive ways of dealing with conflict in the future. There are amazing stories of courage and bravery, kindness, selflessness and team work. Much of the ‘mateship’ culture that is often a symbol of Australia, was developed through the various war efforts of men and women in combat, medical and all other support in the field, working together in manufacturing of uniforms, helping each other to manage at home while partners and children were at war. The war effort involved everyone. I recommend the following links to you to share with your children. http://www.anzacwebsites.com/activities/classroom.htm http:// www.australiansatwar.gov.au/pdf/aaw_primary_p1.pdf Other highlights of the term are: Somers camp for a fortunate few, Leprechaun competition, Fun Run and all things Irish Festival, Author visit, Jamie Oliver Food Revolution day, Lion King (we will ensure a great Lion King day for students not attending this excursion), Eisteddfod and cross Country. There is also May Race holiday, Mother’s day, Winter sports competition, whole school walk and Grandparent Day. NAPLAN testing will also be this term and we hope that the students are reflecting on their teaching and learning while also practicing their reading and Maths fluency tasks, talking about their maths problem solving, practicing their spelling strategies and working on their writing pieces. All these can be done at home not with formal homework, but by asking them to share their work with you. Please ask your teachers for any guidance as to how you can best support your child at home. I look forward to catching up with you all as the term progresses. I love autumn and I hope that you too can enjoy crisp mornings, sunny days and then relaxing with added warmth in the evenings. Don't let your child post photos of themselves wearing their school uniform – it can be enough to identify your child's school. Ensure your child never organises to meet up with any strangers they have met online. Talk about what websites are appropriate with your child so they understand and make the right choice. By publishing without thinking, your child's innocent work online may be something that comes back later to haunt them. If your child starts being secretive about what they are doing online, check it out. 1. Keep computers out in the open Your child may think twice about looking at inappropriate websites and won't be able to chat to their friends all night while you think they are doing their homework. 2. Mind your business Remind your child to keep information such as their name, address, phone number, school and even your credit card number to themselves. When signing up to a chat room, they should use a screen name that is a nickname and not easy to work out. The same goes for choosing passwords – don't make them easy to figure out. If your child is going to put photos on the internet, ensure they don't show them wearing their school uniform – this can be enough to identify your child's school. Also ensure that any photos are not the type that would attract unwanted attention from strangers. 3. Just because it's on the internet, it doesn't mean it's true Make sure your child uses multiple sources for research, and is careful not to plagiarise. 4. Stranger danger is online, too Ensure your child never organises to meet up with any strangers they have met online. If they really want to meet up, encourage them to talk to you about it first and insist on going along with them. Remind your children to also be wary opening emails from strangers. They could contain spam (online junk mail), a virus (which will harm your computer), or be from a stranger looking for trouble. 5. Get a filter Internet filters can help block inappropriate sites for children. None are completely reliable and it's best if you talk about what websites are appropriate with your child so they understand and make the right choice on their own. 6. Encourage your child to talk with you about their online experiences – good and bad This will make it easier for them if they see something inappropriate or are emailed something unsuitable. If they are embarrassed to tell you, persuade them to at least tell a teacher or another trusted adult. 7. Good manners also exist online Talk about this with your child and it may lead to a decline in bullying behaviour, not to mention the many disagreements that children have with each other. 8. Forever is a long time A lot of blogs and websites maintain information as part of cyberspace forever. By publishing without thinking of the future, your child's innocent work online may be something that comes up later on and may negatively impact their career and personal life. Danger signs • Your child constantly sits on the computer in chat rooms or instant messaging, from straight after school to very late at night. • Your child begins showing unexplained money or items that come from "a friend you don't know". • Your child starts being secretive about what they are doing online – this could include anything from minimising screens as you walk past, to not letting you see their blogs/chat/social media sites hp://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/zh/technology/cybersafety/keeping-kids-safe-online Nicole Farrelly Primary Welfare Officer PH: 5565 8332 - FAX: 5565 8812 - EMAIL: [email protected] WEB: koroitps.global2.vic.edu.au PRINCIPAL: Michelle Bickley - SCHOOL COUNCIL PRESIDENT: Stephen Hoy Term 2 Week 1 - Newsletter Date: 17 April 2015 PH: 5565 8332 - FAX: 5565 8812 - EMAIL: [email protected] WEB: koroitps.global2.vic.edu.au PRINCIPAL: Michelle Bickley - SCHOOL COUNCIL PRESIDENT: Stephen Hoy Term 2 Week 1- Newsletter Date: 17 April 2015 Education Tips: Literacy PH: 5565 8332 - FAX: 5565 8812 - EMAIL: [email protected] WEB: koroitps.global2.vic.edu.au PRINCIPAL: Michelle Bickley - SCHOOL COUNCIL PRESIDENT: Stephen Hoy Term 2 Week 1 Newsletter Date: 17 April 2015 KDPS COMMUNITY PAGE Koroit Auskick starts Sunday 12th of April, 9.30am at Vic Park Koroit.
