$8.75 per hour
La Porte County Public Library has an opening for a part-time Customer Service
Specialist for our Mobile Library. The primary responsibilities of this position include
providing excellent customer service to our Mobile Library users by assisting them with
locating materials and electronic resources, checking materials in and out, shelving
materials and shelf reading, and promoting library services, classes, and events to
library users.
Qualifications and skills include but are not limited to: detail oriented; ability to multitask; good computer and people skills; a strong desire to work with the public; ability to
perform basic preventative vehicle maintenance such as checking oil and fluid levels.
Customer service experience preferred. Valid Indiana Driver’s license and/or
Chauffeur’s license required, or ability to obtain Chauffeur’s license within one month of
employment.

CUSTOMER SERVICE SPECIALIST
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Fully embraces La Porte County Public Library’s Mission as the center of community life
by effectively acting on all components of the Library’s Strategic Plan and customer
service best practices, to deliver high quality customer service, research assistance,
instruction, and events to customers of all ages.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (not all Inclusive)
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential

1.
Customer service:
a.
Accurately registers customer information into database and issues
borrower cards.
b.
Checks materials in and out.
c.
Resolves customer issues, and reconciles records as required.
d.
Accurately answers customers’ borrowing and directional inquiries in
person and by telephone.
e.
Assists customers in locating print, non-print, and electronic resources,
and with the online catalog.
f.
Collects, handles, and tabulates money.
g.
Sorts and returns materials to designated locations within the system.
h.
Participates in collection maintenance and shelf reading as assigned.
i.
Takes customer suggestions for purchase.
j.
Opens and closes branch according to established procedures.
k.
Instructs and assists customers in the use of PC’s, photocopier, Internet,
and electronic resources.
l.
Responsible for assigned projects within the department.
m.
Addresses problem situations with inappropriate behavior of library
customers.
n.
Includes duties related to events that fall outside of library operating hours.
o.
Empties book drop daily or as needed.
p.
Consistently promotes library classes, events, and services to customers.
q.
Keeps sidewalks and entries clear of snow and ice or debris that poses a
safety hazard.

Attends staff meetings and training sessions.
4.
Physical Demands
a.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required
to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with
hands and arms; talk or hear; smell. The employee is occasionally
required to stand; walk; sit; climb; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance
vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to
focus. The employee must be able to perceive, initiate, or respond to fire
alarms, warning sirens, and telephone system all-call messages in a calm,
rational
manner, making sure that the other employees and patrons
are safe and out of the building.

room temperature changes.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to
noise levels that are low to moderate.

confined area (Mobile Library).

locations where access to restrooms is not readily available.
