TS CENTAUR A Youth Organisation with a Difference AUSTRALIAN NAVY CADETS WHAT DO CADETS DO? Recognised as an official Australian Navy Cadet Unit in 1997, TS Centaur provides the opportunity for the youth of Maleny & surrounds to acquire skills in leadership and teamwork by participating in sailing, power boating, bushwalking, rifle shooting, drum band, parade activities, seamanship, organised camps with other Units and many other activities. Cadets are taught leadership and teamwork and the effective application of those attributes by way of acquired communication skills. The Australian Navy Cadets is a voluntary youth organisation, open to young males and females from the calendar year they turn 13 to 20 years of age and is sponsored by the Royal Australian Navy. There are some 82 Units across Australia each with between 20 and 80 Cadets. TS Centaur is part of the Sunshine Coast Flotilla, consisting of 5 Units. Opportunity exists for progress through the ranks from Recruit to Seaman, Able Seaman, Leading Seaman, Petty Officer and Chief Petty Officer. Promotion is achieved by virtue of personal commitment, examinations and displaying responsibility, whilst assisting in maintaining the Unit as a positive and enjoyable environment for everyone. Our Unit, TS Centaur commemorates the Australian Hospital Ship CENTAUR (AHS 47) that was sunk off Moreton Island in 1943 by a torpedo fired from a Japanese submarine, resulting in the loss of 268 lives. The Royal Australian Navy supports the Navy Cadets by supplying uniform, and sailing craft together with their maintenance; the RAN also provides some further financial and logistical assistance. The Unit Support Committee has provided the Unit Headquarters and is responsible for its upkeep and all other equipment not provided by Navy. Parents are thus expected to support the Cadets through membership of the Unit Support Committee and participation in Unit fund raising activities.
