“Sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ”
Celebrating 65 Years!
Pass It On
As we celebrate our 65th Anniversary as
a congregation our theme of “Pass It On”
reminds us as we look at our past, we
are also looking to prepare for the future, by passing along the lessons/spirit
of the past to our next chapter.
sport team events, etc. We would like to
make a PowerPoint presentation to run
during our celebrating. You can bring
your photos to Fred Meyer or drop them
off or scan and email them to the church
office at [email protected].
Details about our "Pass It On" anniversary celebration here at Martin Luther…
Be sure you have added your handprints
to the two banners that are also being
made for our anniversary. There will be
a couple more times for you to paint
your hands and add your handprints to
these banners. Watch for them in one or
two weeks in March.
Since Maundy Thursday, April 2, is our
actual anniversary date, we have invited
our bishop, Rev. Jeff Barrow, to come to
our service that evening. He will participate in our Maundy Thursday worship
service, bringing a message to us. Please
plan to attend and welcome him.
Then the celebratory service will be on
Sunday, April 19! Please mark your calendar for that morning of worship, and a
meal, and celebration program. There
will be one worship service at 10:30 a.m.
The service will include an anniversary
choir with past and present directors and
members of our choir, directed by Jill
Dahlgren and accompanied by Lois
Fuhrmann. Marcia Smeiska will also be
sharing her music in special ways.
Watch for the sign-up in the narthex in
the next few weeks for the potluck meal
to follow the service. Please plan to stay
for this lunch and the program to follow.
We will be remembering and celebrating with more special talent at that program. Families are encouraged to stay
with their children!
We are asking people to search through
their old pictures and bring us any that
you have from special events or happenings at the church: activities of groups,
construction of the new building, old Confirmation pictures, weddings held here,
As part of our "Pass It On" theme, we
are asking for donations for an anniversary gift to be given to Reformation
Lutheran Church in the heart of the city of
Milwaukee. Reformation was located at
35th & Garfield, but due to the age of
their building and the major repairs that
were needed, they chose to sell their
building and are presently looking for a
more cost-effective building in the same
neighborhood.
We would like to help them with the
Infant Safe Sleep ministry they run in
collaboration with the City of Milwaukee.
Our goal for this gift is $2,500. More
information about their program and
donation envelopes are in the church
narthex. Please stop by and consider
helping us reach our goal.
If you have questions about the gift or
any of these plans for celebration, feel
free to contact anyone on the anniversary task force. They include Mary Meyer ([email protected]/

Judie Born, Kathy Holat, Dennis Brylow,
Jill Dahlgren, Jean and Keith Maurer,
Carol Moore, and Darlene Freels.
Our 5 Cornerstones
Engaging The Bible
Giving in Service
Building Loving Relationships
Growing in Worship
Daily Acts of Faith
Martin Luther Church, as a
congregation, welcomes and
celebrates the richness and
diversity of all God’s people,
regardless of where they’ve come
from or where they are in their
life’s journey. Therefore, we follow the teaching of 2 Corinthians
5:18: “All this is from God who
reconciled us through Jesus Christ
and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” We believe that the
good news of Jesus Christ is to be
shared by all people without regard to age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation,
socioeconomic status, or physical or mental abilities. All are welcome as
members of the Body of Christ as
workers in the kingdom of God
and at the table of our Lord.

Have my sermons recently been focused more heavily in one area than
the others? Is my own faith life leaning away from service or prayer or
relationships?
Lent, Easter, and Pentecost Going Up, In, and Out
A few years ago, I was at a conference where the speaker summarized
the practices of a church congregation in three simple words: Up, In,
and Out. Everything a congregation
does, wants to do, and believes
about itself fall into these basic categories, he said. Most churches will
specialize in one or two, but all three
are important to be a healthy
church.



Up refers to individuals’ relationship with God and includes things like devotionals, Bible study, and prayer
groups.
In refers to individuals’ relationships to each other and
includes fellowship activities
and community growth.
Out refers to a congregation’s relationship to the
community and world and
includes service projects,
evangelism, and other outreach.
Ever since, I’ve found this to be a
helpful tool to evaluate a variety of
things: Do our upcoming programs
include enough “up” opportunities?
Up, In, and Out is a short and easy
way to think about a lot of things
related to being the church. As I sat
down to write my newsletter article
for the spring, it occurred to me that
they are also a good overlay for the
coming seasons of the church year:
Lent, Easter, and Pentecost.
Lent, with its focus on spiritual discipline and “returning to God,” is a
time of Up. In Easter, we read the
stories of the early church and how
they came together, learned how to
be a new religious community, and
grew; that’s In. Pentecost tells us the
story of the Holy Spirit kicking open
the doors and driving the church Out
into the world to serve, greet, and
love those who were not yet part of
the church.
Just as Up, In, and Out are all needed for a healthy church, all three are
needed for a healthy personal faith,
too. With that in mind, you may want
to consider using these coming seasons as a chance to focus on these
three areas in your own life. During
Lent, if you don’t already, pick up a
discipline, find a good devotional,
carve out time to pray or read a
book in the Bible. During Easter, you
could seek out a
Cross+Generational event, attend a
Bible study, or pledge to come to
worship more often than you
normally would. In Pentecost, volunteer at Tosa Cares or Serenity Inns,
bring an item weekly for one of our
collections, or just spend time walking your neighborhood and getting
to know your own neighbors.
Whatever you may choose to do,
remember that Jesus has “gone
ahead of you” so “you will see him”
(Mark 16:7). Up, In, or Out, God is
present in every direction. As always, please share what you learn
and experience with me or another
sister or brother.

Lenten Worship - Join us every Wednesday in March at 7:00 p.m. as Lenten worship
services continue. 6:00 p.m. soup suppers precede worship.
Holy Week Worship
Holy Week is March 29-April 5 this year. The series of worship services take us through
the Passion story of Jesus, from the Last Supper, through the crucifixion and to the empty
tomb. The rich traditions of these have been celebrated for centuries.
Palm Sunday/Passion Sunday, March 29, at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
On this day we wave palms to proclaim the coming king, but move into the passion story, recognizing our own guilt in
turning on Jesus, and preparing for the rest of Holy Week.
Maundy Thursday, April 2, at 7:00 p.m. (Meal begins at 6:00 p.m.)
On this day, we remember the Last Supper and Jesus' words of servanthood to his disciples, ending the service with
the stripping of the altar. As we remember the Last Supper, we will share a meal before worship. Foot-washing will
be available during worship.
Good Friday, April 3, at 7:00 p.m.
Jesus' crucifixion is remembered on what is the most important day of the church year. Our service explores the
emotions of this holy day and highlights the depth of God’s love.
Easter Vigil, April 4, at 7:00 p.m.
This ancient liturgy carries us from mourning into the light of Easter. Beginning in darkness, the service incorporates fire,
water, and five lessons that tell the history of God's acts of salvation, culminating in the acclamation of “Alleluia, Christ
is Risen!”
Easter Day, April 5, at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
On this day of resurrection, we celebrate the end of death in favorite hymns and great shouts
of “Alleluia!” If Christ is alive, then so are we!
If you only come on Easter, you're missing most of the story. Join us for the full journey of Holy
Week and experience the power of Christ's passion for yourself.

You are In the Staff’s Prayers!
Starting on Ash Wednesday this year, the MLC staff has started taking time in their weekly staff meetings to pray for
three to four families by name. Over the course of twelve months, all MLC families will have been prayed for once.
One to two weeks before your family will be prayed for, you will receive a postcard to inform you of the date you
will be prayed for and asking you to contact the office if there are any specific prayers that the staff can offer on
your behalf. Look for your postcard and remember that you are on the agenda! (Thank you to Kelly Kuhl for coming
up with the idea and to Judie Born for mailing the postcards.)
Lenten Rehearsal Times - Adult Choir rehearsals on March 11, 18, 25 will be after mid-week services, from 7:45 to
8:30 p.m. Recorder rehearsals will be March 11 & 25 from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m.
Educational Opportunities
“Triple A” Adults
Are you a “Triple A” adult? No, no, this has nothing to do with cars and roadside assistance. It has to do with relationships.
A “Triple A” adult is authentic, available, and affirming. Our children, youth, and young adults need as many “Triple A” adults
in their lives as possible. Actually, adults need as many “Triple A” adults in their lives as possible, too. We can be authentic,
available, and affirming Christian disciples because God was first all of those things to us.
Authentic: To be authentic is to be trustworthy and transparent, to be real and reliable. Authenticity for humans is
grounded in God's first being authentic with us. God is faithful to God’s promises. We can trust God.
Available: An attribute that is often in short supply in a world that is so busy and so preoccupied with things, to be
available is to value others enough to make space and time for relationships. Human availability is grounded in God's
first being available for us. In Jesus Christ, God says God is always and ever available to us. God is not too busy to
become incarnate. God continues to be available through the eternal presence of the Holy Spirit. God both gives us
permission and challenges us to be available for others.
Affirming: To be affirming is to approach life with a basic “yes” to live positively and supportively. All human affirming
is grounded in God's first affirming us. While humans are often more at home with rewards and punishments, judgments,
and even condemnation, God's will is salvation and affirmation. (Definitions adapted from www.faithlutheran.org)
At Martin Luther Church, the Christian Formation Team strives to surround children and youth with “Triple A” adults. Studies in
youth and family ministry have shown that children who grow into faithful adults do so because they had at least ten caring
adults in their lives, besides their parents. Now, we are not secretly evaluating everyone, checklist in hand. No, because by the
grace of God, we can all become “Triple A” adults. “How?” you might ask. By building relationships! Join us for the
Cross+Generational openings before Christian Formation hour. (Did you know that each class is discussing the same Bible story?)
Join in a Cross+Generational Sunday School Sunday. Join in a Cross+Generational service project. Get to know the family who
sits behind you in worship. Ask them how you can pray for them. Think of relationship-building ways to involve different ages in
the ministry you are already a part of.
Here are some past examples of opportunities to practice being a “Triple A” adult to people of all ages. Enjoy the pictures!
Cross+Generational Sunday School: Stewardship Sunday
Together, intergenerational groups had caring conversations about the
Parable of the Talents. “Triple A” adults helped children and youth fill
out talent forms and pledge forms. This lesson coincided with what
Martin Luther Church was doing as a whole on that Sunday, as we all
pledged to “Pass It On.”
Cross+Generational Sunday School: Follow in God’s Ways
On this Sunday, intergenerational groups had caring conversation about how we follow in
God’s ways. They then worked together to complete stations throughout the church, illustrating
different ways to follow God. At one station, they
prayed together. At another, they blessed each other.
At a third station, they had fun together playing
"Simon Says." At another station, they cooperated in
coming up with ways to serve people.
MLC Service Projects: Valentines for Burbank Teachers
& Footprints in the Basement
People of all ages came together this February to provide Valentines bags for the
teachers at our partner, Burbank Elementary School. Members of MLC donated the
essentials for cold and flu season: tissues, disinfectant, hand sanitizer, and paper
towels. Servants decorated paper bags with words of love and encouragement for
the teachers and filled 42 bags!
Meanwhile, “Triple A” adults were downstairs helping children and youth put footprints on the basement walls. The footprints are
particular colors (red, orange, blue, purple, and green), leading to the rooms corresponding with each color’s name. This footprint
project was meant to serve MLC by creating a sign of hospitality for visitors and little saints who can’t yet read directional signs.
Upcoming Christian Formation Dates:
Sunday, April 19, 9:15 a.m. Cross+Generational Sunday School
Sunday, May 17, 9:15 a.m. Cross+Generational Sunday School
"Aaron"
by Tracy M. Kubiayk
There once was a boy named Aaron who liked to look up to the sky. He loved the clouds and the birds, the trees and the airplanes. He
thought sunsets were wonderful and the lightning storms were fantastic. At nighttime, he would look up toward the heavens and the
marvelous galaxy of stars shining so brightly. He imagined that each star was one of God's angels watching over all the children on earth.
One night, right after sunset, Aaron fell asleep early while looking out his window at one of the brightest stars he'd ever seen. That night,
he had a dream. The star grew bigger and brighter. He could see wings form out from the light. Soon, the bright yellow star sparkled like a
billion stars together in the shape of an angel floating in the twilight.
In this dream, Aaron heard the angel speak to him. The angel told him that he was a special boy and would have a magical life, but there
would be some trials and tribulations along the way.
“Trials and tribulations?” asked Aaron.
“Trials and tribulations,” answered the angel. “Are you okay with that?”
Aaron thought about it. He answered the angel, saying, “I know God loves me and will take care of me each and every day of my
life. So, yes. I am okay with that.”
The angel smiled at Aaron and grew brighter and brighter and turned into the sun. The bright light woke Aaron. It was morning.
He yawned and stretched. Church bells rang. Aaron counted the bells. Seven. It was seven o'clock in the morning. Time to get up and get
ready for the first day of school-- new grade, new friends. It was exciting.
He sat up and slid on his slippers. Then he noticed it. A long white feather laying on his nightstand. It was then that Aaron remembered his
dream about the angel. It was real, he thought. “Cool,” he said out loud.
He picked up the feather and felt its softness as he brushed it through his fingers. He waved it around.
Aaron's slippers turned into shoes!
“What?” he asked.
He waved the feather around again. He was now fully dressed in his school clothes.
“Wow!” Aaron exclaimed, realizing he had a magic angel feather. “Thank you!” he shouted out the window toward the sky.
“I'll take good care of it!”
He asked his mother to sew long pockets into the sides of all his pants. She asked him why. He told his mom about the angel and showed her
the feather.
“With long pockets, I can keep the feather with me and not lose it,” Aaron explained.
She smiled kindly at her son, and she did sew the pockets for him. Now Aaron could keep his magic angel feather on him at all times.
And at night he kept it safe in his dresser drawer.
Every day, he practiced his magic. He pointed the feather at a sparrow with a broken wing and healed it. The bird flew away happily.
He waved the feather at his swing set and fixed the broken swing so he could play on it. Soon, he was able to do all sorts of incredible
things. The feather didn't even seem to get crumpled in his pocket. Every time he pulled it out, it was as white and new as when he first
discovered it on his nightstand.
One morning, on his walk to school, Aaron was looking up into the sky as usual. He noticed how the sky was especially blue, and there weren't
any clouds at all that day. While he walked, he thought about what the angel had said about trials and tribulations. He wondered what those
would be. Life seemed pretty awesome. He was getting good grades. The choir he sang with in church sounded better every practice. He had
two wonderful parents who loved him. And, he had God and his angels watching over him. It was a beautiful day.
But then, suddenly, he felt the earth scrape his knee and noticed he was on the ground. He had been pushed. He heard a boy yelling at him
for looking up at the sky all the time. It was Miles, one of the school bullies. There were three of them at his school. Miles was the meanest of
the three.
“You're such a moron, Aaron, always looking up, not watching where you're going.”
“I see perfectly fine. You came out of nowhere and pushed me!” said Aaron while getting up to his feet.
“Why do you always look up? Maybe you should stay down," said Miles. And he pushed Aaron to the ground again.
Aaron reached into his long pocket for his magic feather and pointed it at Miles.
“What! What happened?” cried Miles, feeling his face to touch his eyes. “I can't see!” He reached out, trying to feel something.
Yeah, now you can't push me down anymore either, thought Aaron as he got up and stepped away from Miles.
Miles found a tree and held on to it for dear life. He was scared because he couldn't see anything.
Aaron looked up into his beautiful blue sky and noticed a bunch of black birds flying around an eagle. The little birds were picking on the
eagle, making a lot of noise. Aaron wondered why the eagle wasn't fighting them. It just flew another circle in the sky. Then it soared up.
Higher and higher it went. Soon the little birds couldn't follow the eagle and gave up their chase. Soar higher, thought Aaron.
He glanced at Miles who was hugging the tree with one hand and feeling his eyes with another. I need to rise above this, not retaliate in anger,
thought Aaron. So he pointed the magic angel feather at Miles and waved it through the air. Miles could see again. Aaron said he was sorry
and continued his walk, looking up at the beautiful fall colors in the treetops. Miles took a deep breath and then ran to school to tell his
friends what had happened. Miles' friend Mike did not believe Miles. Mike saw Aaron out on the playground at recess. He walked over to
Aaron and teased him, singing, “Aaron's a freak, he looks up to the trees, he messes with Miles and gets pushed to his knees. Aaron's a freak,
who looks to the trees, he messes with Miles and gets pushed to his knees.”
“Stop singing,” said Aaron. “Miles started it. I'm not a freak.”
“Aaron's a freak, he looks up to the trees, he messes with Miles and gets pushed to his knees.”
Aaron reached into his pocket again and pointed the feather. The next thing you knew, Mike stopped singing and was holding his
ears. “I can't hear. What happened to all the kids? I don't hear them playing. I can't hear myself! You pointed that feather at me.
It is true!” declared Mike.
Yeah, and now you can't hear yourself sing that horrible rhyme, thought Aaron.
“Please, please don't do this. If you can hear me Aaron, help me.”
Aaron thought about the morning, the eagle rising above the teasing black birds. He did not want to be a black bird. He wanted to be an
eagle. But he was sick and tired of being picked on. Still, it wasn't right. So he pointed his magic feather and gave Mike back his hearing.
Aaron heard a plane overhead. He looked up and saw it far away, leaving a stream of white across the deep blue sky. He whistled a happy
tune, and walked on.
After school, while Aaron was walking home, looking up at the clouds that now formed in the afternoon sky, he noticed Mac walking toward
him. Mac was friends with Miles and Mike. Aaron hoped there wouldn't be any more trouble!
“Your fly is open,” said Mac. Aaron turned red with embarrassment. He looked at his pants. His fly wasn't open!
“Ha ha! Made you look down. Freak!” said Mac.
“That's it!” Aaron reached for his magic feather once again and he took away Mac's voice.
Mac tried to respond, to speak, but nothing came out. He couldn't talk at all! He touched his mouth, his throat, wondering what had
happened.
Yep, can't talk now, can ya? Hard to tease me when you can't speak, isn't it? Thought Aaron.
Mac remembered what his friends had said about Aaron having a magic feather. He had not believed the guys. Until now. Mac dropped to
his knees and held his hands together begging Aaron to give him back his voice. Aaron looked away. He was tired of being picked on. He
didn't know what else to do. Taking away Mac's voice worked. Then he looked up. One of the clouds was shaped like an angel. How beautiful, he thought. He watched as the cloud grew whiter and brighter and became the image of the angel who had given Aaron the feather.
Aaron looked up with wide eyes and an eager heart. But the angel looked down on Aaron and shook his head no. A tear fell from the angel's
eye. It started to mist outside. Another tear fell, and a light rain began.
Mac was still on his knees in the begging position. The boy looked at the angel and looked at Aaron. Back and forth, begging for his voice
back.
Aaron felt absolutely horrible. He fell to his knees. “I'm so, sorry!” he exclaimed. He pointed the feather at Mac and gave Mac his
voice back. “I can talk. Oh, thank you,” he said to the angel. He gave Aaron a dirty look and walked home.
The rain fell harder and harder and the clouds became darker, so dark that the image of the angel faded. Aaron walked through the rain,
feeling so guilty for letting the angel down. He went home and prayed. It rained most of the night, and Aaron prayed and prayed for God's
forgiveness, for the angel's forgiveness. He promised never to use the magic feather to cause harm again. Aaron fell asleep looking out his
window at the rain.
In the morning Aaron felt something warm on his cheek.
He heard a whisper, “I forgive you.”
Aaron opened his eyes. The sun was shining brightly through his bedroom window. Bright rays of light caressed his face, warming him
with the comfort of sunshine. “Oh, thank you. Thank you, so much!” Aaron said out loud.
He got up and out of bed and ready for school. On his walk, he looked up to the sky. It was sunny and there were a few fluffy clouds floating here and there. Birds sang from the trees, and the wind blew a gentle, cool breeze through the treetops. Aaron felt so thankful for God's
forgiveness. And he said a silent prayer of thanks to the angel, too. He was almost at school when three figures appeared on the path. It was
Miles, Mike, and Mac. All three of them were there, waiting for Aaron. The boys planned on stealing Aaron's magic angel feather. So they
waited for Aaron, cutting him off on the path. When they saw him they started to run for him. Aaron felt fear. They were coming so fast. They
were going to get him! He didn't have much time. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the magic feather. The three boys were upon him.
Miles was reaching for him. Aaron pointed the feather just in time, and froze all three boys in their tracks.
“I'm so sorry. It's all I could think of to do.”
“Unfreeze us,” Miles demanded.
“So you can push me down and tease me some more? No. There's got to be a better way.”
“Unfreeze us you freak!” screamed Mike.
Mac didn't say anything; he just looked scared.
“Yeah, freak,” said Miles.
Maybe they're right, thought Aaron. Maybe I am a freak. But I can't help but look up. The sky is so gorgeous. There are so many great
things to see when I look up.
“Freak, freak, freak!” said Miles and Mike.
“Let us go, freak!” said Miles.
Freak. They think I'm a total freak. No! I will not receive that! I am not a freak! thought Aaron.
He remembered what the angel said to him that first night, appearing out from the stars: “You are a special boy, Aaron. You see, hear and
relate to the world differently than others. You will have a magical life, but there will be some trials and tribulations along the way.”
These must be... examples. Trials and tribulations, thought Aaron. And God did take care of me. He always will take care of me.
Aaron took a long, deep breath.
“Okay,” he said. “First of all, before I unfreeze you, hear me out. Okay?”
Mac nodded his head yes. “Hear him out, guys,” he said to his friends.
The other two nodded yes.
“Okay. Miles. You should not have pushed me down.”
Miles was about to say something, but Aaron held up his free hand, stopping him.
“Hear me out.”
Miles kept silent.
“I know you have mean older brothers and you see them fighting each other all the time. Sometimes they push you down. I think that
can't be easy. But that doesn't mean you should do that to others.”
Miles looked down at his feet. What Aaron said was true, and Miles knew it.
“I'm going to unfreeze you and give you a magical power,” said Aaron. He pointed the feather, unfreezing Miles only.
Miles' frozen, outstretched arms fell to his sides. The boy stretched and moved around, grateful to be unfrozen. “What magic are
you going to give me?” he asked. Aaron brushed the feather through the air, up and down in front of Miles. “You are now a black
belt in Judo. But, the magic is only there for defense. You will not be able to cause harm. Is that okay with you or should I take it
back?”
“Really? That's awesome. Thanks, Aaron! I'm really sorry about pushing you,” he said. “Gotta go guys!” he said, running off toward
home to test out his new defensive powers.
“What about me?” asked Mike, still frozen next to Mac.
Aaron unfroze the other two boys. “Hold out your hands,” he said to Mike. Mike held out his hands, palms up. “I know your baseball
team is going on a field trip to Yankee Stadium. I also know you can't go because your parents can't afford it. Here you go,” said
Aaron. A plane ticket and stadium ticket appeared in Mike's hands.
“Thanks, Aaron!” he said, walking away, smiling at his tickets and singing: “Here come the Yankees. Let's get behind and cheer the-Yankees. They're goanna learn to fear the-- Yankees!”
Mac stood there silent.
“You okay, Mac?” asked Aaron.
“Yeah. That was something else. That angel, and that rain, hey?”
“Yeah. Listen, Mac. I don't think you're so bad. I know your parents are getting divorced, and it's bound to make a kid cranky. But I
got something that might cheer you up, and I'll make sure it's okay with your parents.”
“What's that?”
Aaron waved his feather and a puppy appeared, barking up at Mac.
“Oh! He's so cute!”
“It's a girl,” said Aaron.
The little puppy was white with black dots on her soft short fur. Her floppy ears were adorable.
“I'm going to call her Angel.”
“I think that's perfect,” said Aaron.
The puppy barked a few times, happily.
“Thank you.”
“No problem. See you tomorrow at school?”
“Yep,” he replied playing with the pup. “I'm going this way, if you want to walk with Angel and me.”
“Okay,” said Aaron.
“Maybe we can get a kickball game in at recess.”
“Sounds great,” replied Aaron.
And they walked on, as friends.

Construction Updates
There are some more closings coming
to the Zoo Interchange Project, BUT
they may not be a big deal for
getting to church. AND there is one
piece of good news that I will share
at the end.
There are three new closings you
should be aware of:



The intersection of 95th and
Bluemound (by the entrance
to St. Therese) is now closed
and will stay closed until
late May
The ramp from I-894 North
to I-94 West will close in
early March until late 2015
The ramp from I-94 West to
I-894 South will close in
early March until late 2017
(Yes, 2017!)
The ramp closings are major closings
for the Interchange, but neither of
them should impact getting to or
from MLC. (Just as a reminder, the
92nd St. Bridge is closed until late
2015.)
The good news is that WisDOT is
now saying the Bluemound Bridge
should be completed by late May
instead of June. That may only be a
week or two ahead of schedule, but
it's a lot better than being behind
schedule.
As always, drive safely and thank
you for being an active part of this
congregation.

The MLC Book Group
The MLC Book Group meets the first Sunday of the month at 6:00 pm at MLC.
It may have been a short book, but "Train Dreams" by Denis Johnson provided plenty of discussion.
Perhaps books that you can't quite see the point of provoke more thought.
Our next meeting is Sunday, April 12, at 6:00 p.m. at the Church (a week after Easter).
The book selection is "Under the Wide and Starry Sky" by Nancy Horan.
Random House provided the following introduction to "Under the Wide and Starry Sky":
From Nancy Horan, New York Times bestselling author of "Loving Frank," comes her much-anticipated
second novel, which tells the improbable love story of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson and his
tempestuous American wife, Fanny. At 35, Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne has left her philandering husband
in San Francisco to set sail for Belgium—with her three children and nanny in tow—to study art. It is a
chance for this adventurous woman to start over, to make a better life for all of them, and to pursue her
own desires. Not long after her arrival, however, tragedy strikes, and Fanny and her children repair to a
quiet artists’ colony in France where she can recuperate. Emerging from a deep sorrow, she meets a lively
Scot, Robert Louis Stevenson, ten years her junior, who falls instantly in love with the earthy, independent,
and opinionated “belle Americaine.” Fanny does not immediately take to the slender young lawyer who
longs to devote his life to writing—and who would eventually pen such classics as "Treasure Island" and
"The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." In time, though, she succumbs to Stevenson’s charms, and
the two begin a fierce love affair—marked by intense joy and harrowing darkness—that spans the
decades and the globe. The shared life of these two strong-willed individuals unfolds into an adventure as
impassioned and unpredictable as any of Stevenson’s own unforgettable tales.
"The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics" by
Daniel James Brown is also on our list, should you care to read ahead. Since this book is a little more
difficult to get from the library, we've pushed it back a bit.

MLC's Christian Care Ministry
MLC has a rich (almost 65-year) history among its membership. Many of our members are now homebound and
elderly and cannot be a part of our active church life, even though they wish they could be. We cannot and
should not forget these pillars of MLC and what they did for our church. This is why we are organizing the
Christian Care Ministry team. We need YOU to serve on this team, even if it's just in a small way. Are any of the
following ways to serve in the Christian Care Ministry appealing to you?
1. Visit the homebound
2. Visit those who are hospitalized
3. Make routine, cheering, caring telephone calls
4. Send get-well cards, birthday cards, holiday greeting cards, and/or sympathy cards
5. Bring the homebound with you to a church service
6. Prepare and/or deliver Easter baskets and Christmas cookies
7. Make meals for and/or bring meals to those who have recently returned home after a stay in the
hospital
8. Make meals for and/or bring meals to those who are grieving the loss of a loved one
9. Report a member's need for Christian care to the CCM team leader
10. Take part in MLC's prayer chain
11. Ensure that the names of those in need of prayer are conveyed to the CCM team leader
If you would like to be a part of MLC's Christian Care Ministry team in any way, BIG or small, we welcome you
and thank you for caring! Please call Darlene Freels at 262.628.2627 or contact Pastor Ari.

NEWS FROM TOSA CARES
Thank you to all for your continued support of Tosa Cares and your contributions to the Tosa Cares Food Pantry. In addition to
food, Tosa Cares is able to offer clothing, school supplies, personal care supplies, chiropractic care, eye exams and glasses,
blood pressure checks, and other additional support to approximately 150 families at each distribution. You can find out more
information about Tosa Cares at their web site: www.tosacares.org.
More than 146 families were helped at the January 7, 2015 distribution. In addition to the usual services offered, the
Wauwatosa Health Department offered free flu shots to those in need.
The next distribution will be Saturday, March 7, at Mt. Zion Church, 12012 W North Ave in Wauwatosa. If you can help pack
and distribute food for a couple of hours that morning starting at 8:30, your help would be greatly appreciated. There’s also a
Tosa Cares barrel set up in the narthex at MLC for food contributions.
Future food distributions in 2015 are scheduled for April 25, June 20, August 8, October 3, and November 21.
Stay tuned for other events in which you can contribute to Tosa Cares. In February, Metcalf’s Sentry store in Wauwatosa
contributed 5% of food purchases to Tosa Cares. Other similar events are scheduled, especially in the Wauwatosa area,
so please watch for information in Sunday's bulletins and Wednesday's Weekly Windows.
Please contact Mary Felkner for further information or if you can help at a distribution.
The Free Little Library is in the Memorial Garden area of MLC. Stop by, sit a spell, and pick out a book to read. These little
libraries are popping up all over in residential and church yards. We thank Darlene Freels for providing the library kit, Carl
Solie, who put it together and installed it in our garden, and Amy Burns, who painted it. If you would like to donate books for
children and/or adults, we welcome them. Books for the little library may be dropped off in the church office.
